Chapter 3: So maybe I like her
During the day I stayed in the house. I don't know why but I preferred the night. During the day, I'd write. Not really something a vampire nor a werewolf would do but I did. I wrote about my family. I wrote about myself. I even wrote a paragraph about Shade.
I didn't know if it was right to like a vampire. She was half. But still……it didn't feel right but at the same time, it felt more than right. All I could think about was her purple eyes and the softness of her lips.
What the fuck is wrong with me? I can't get involved with a vampire girl. I mean I'm a vampire too but things will get complicated.
I could smell Eric coming in the room.
"What?" I asked. Eric sighed and leaned against the wall in my room. "I'm sorry about last night. I just…me and Adrianne would rather not tell you everything. Its only to protect you."
"Why? What part of lying to me will protect me?" I asked. Eric stared at me.
"We're not lying to you. I understand you want to know about Todd. But…he's just a difficult person to talk about."
"Why? What did he do?" I asked. Eric sighed.
"Ready to run? It's going to be dark soon and the moon is coming out." Adrianne said standing in the doorway.
"What time is it?" I asked.
"Almost twelve." She answered. I looked out the window. I could have sworn it was just daylight outside. Maybe I was going crazy. "Um….I run by myself full moons. You know that."
"Why can't you join the family?"
"Why can't you tell me about my dad?" I asked. I closed the journal I was writing in and turned towards her in my chair.
"Why can't you just tell me? Tell me something other than he's done bad things. Anything!" My anger was rising. I knew I needed to shift soon. I could feel the burn inside my body all ready.
"He killed Eric's sister." She said. I slowly glanced at Eric who was looking down to the floor. My eyes went back to Adrianne's. "Why?" I asked.
"Just to piss me off." Eric answered. I shook my head. "He killed your sister….just to piss you off?" I asked. Eric nodded once. I ran my fingers through my hair and covered my face with my hands. Seriously…..what the fuck? I guess he really was bad. You throw a rock at someone to piss them off. You don't kill someone's sister to do it.
"I need to go run." I got up and walked pass them out of my room. I pulled my shirt over my head and threw it on the floor.
I glanced at the time. Eleven fifty eight. I walked out of the house and out into the night.
"Lucas! Lucas!" Kaiden yelled. I turned and Kaiden had his shirt off. "Can I run with you?" He asked. I sighed. "Kid, you know I run way faster than you, mom and Eric."
"Please, Lucas? I never ran with you." He said. I loved the kid. Why not?
"Alright. Think you can keep up, K?" I asked. He nodded and started unbuckling his belt.
I suddenly felt a faint burning around my chest. Then it got hotter and hotter. I cried out and fell into the dirt. It felt like my bones were cracking. "Fuck!" My hands dug into the dirt and I pulled. I got on all fours and a deep growl rose from my chest. My vision became blurry and everything became dark for a second. I could feel my fur ripping from my chest and then from my back. The burning pain was unbearable.
I could hear Kaiden's screams from behind me and Adrianne's and Eric's. Fuck. My vision came back to me much clearer and brighter. I howled into the air and Kaiden howled behind me. I took off in a run. Whipping through the trees fast in a blurring speed. I had to make sure not to go too close to the vampire side. I could hear Kaiden's footsteps behind me trying to keep up. I was getting more and more adrenaline the faster I ran. Whenever we shifted at the full moon, Aeryn or his sister, Aries would go and babysit Akaria. I felt like I was never there for her. I loved the little girl to death but……I felt like I wasn't there enough for her.
I ran to the edge of the woods where a huge lake stood. I walked into the water a little. It was warm
I saw something on the other side of the lake. A girl. I knew her face as soon as she turned. Shade. I hid back in the woods hoping she couldn't see me.
She swam towards the shallow area and got back on the dirt. She was completely naked. If I was in my human form, I probably would be hard right now. She wrung the water out of her long black hair which seemed to be longer when it was wet. She leaned down and slid her black panties back on and then placed on a big white t shirt. I watched as she disappeared on the vampire side. I don't know why I was so fascinated with Shade.
At Midnight, every full moon, the wolves only have to shift for an hour. For shapeshifters they must shift all night until 6 A.M. exactly. No one fully understands it but that's just what happens.
An hour later, I was in the woods placing my clothes back on.
"Hey stranger." Someone whispered. I turned and Shade was smiling at me. Her purple eyes gleamed. "You know my name."
She nodded. "I do. But I like calling you stranger. Another part of my weirdness." She said.
I smiled at her.
She licked her lips. "I know you were watching me."
For some reason I wasn't embarrassed she knew about me spying on her. Well not spying. Okay. Spying.
She giggled lightly. "I'm sorry." I said. She shook her head and grabbed my hand. "Don't be. I didn't mind." She whispered.
"Why do you swim naked?"
"Why not?" She asked shrugging. She circled me for a second before stopping in front of me.
"And you kissing me yesterday. What the hell was that?" I asked.
"You kissing me back, what the hell was that?" She asked. We stared at eachother.
"Why'd you kiss me?"
"You were upset so I thought I'd cheer you up." She said innocently. Her black hair blew in the wind and whipped across her face.
"That's the only reason you did it?"
She shrugged. "Maybe it's also because I like you."
"You like me? Why? I'm a loner."
"Not if I'm with you. Listen, you don't have to be alone all the time because you're annoyed with your family. You're not alone." She walked to me and smiled.
"How would you know that?"
"I thought I was alone when my dad left my mother and me. Turns out, my life is better without him and I have my mom and my friends and cousins who love me. I don't need my dad. And I'm sure you're amazing without yours."
"That asshole killed my aunt. Well my half aunt."
"See? You don't need your dad. Just…let him go. Because, Lucas, I think you're pretty great without him." She whispered. Her purple eyes looked into mine.
"What?" I asked.
"Kiss me." She whispered. I didn't hesitate to press her against a tree and kiss her deeply. Fine. Fine. I like the girl. She smelled amazing. Way more amazing than I've ever smelled in my life. Her scent was cinnamon. Chocolate and oranges and….peaches. I wanted her blood. I know she was another vampire but…..I needed her blood. I don't know which side was stronger. Her human side or her vampire side. Her smell was overwhelming.
She invited me into her mouth and her fingers grabbed my hair as she moaned. I wanted her. Bad. Physically and emotionally. I don't know how I came to like her. But I just did. Was she my mate? The One?
I pulled away to look into her eyes. "Your eyes are white again." She whispered. I traced my thumb over her cheek and began kissing her neck.
"Can I bite you?" I asked. She slowly nodded.
I licked her just to taste the flesh of her skin. I couldn't believe how good she smelled. Fucking amazing. My fangs slid out and I immediately bit into her neck. She moaned and pulled me closer to her. I only drunk a little. I then used my tongue to clean the wound. And I pressed my lips against the wound and it slowly faded. I pulled back to look her in her eyes.
She placed her warm hand on my cheek and smiled. "I never felt anything like that before. It made me feel…….hot."
I smirked at her. "You taste good. I almost got carried away."
"Just my blood? Nothing else about me carries you away?" She asked smiling weakly.
"Your eyes, your hair, your voice, and your skin." I admitted. She blushed and chewed on her lip.
"I like your hair. Your eyes. Your attitude. You try to act tough but really…..some parts of you are sensitive."
"You must have me all figured out." I said. She grabbed a hold to my shirt.
"I hope not. I like how mysterious you are." She pulled me towards her. I wanted to kiss her again. Just to taste her again.
She looked in my eyes and smiled. "I think we're avoiding the inevitable." She whispered. I raised my eyebrow. "We're probably trying to ask ourselves in our minds if we're each other's mate." Shade said nodding.
"Maybe. I don't know if you are yet." I said narrowing my eyes at her. She nodded. "Right. I feel the same way. If I was full werewolf, we would know because we'd be of the same species." She said.
"Well when we figure out if its what we want then we will." I said shrugging. Shade smiled widely at me. Her perfect white teeth gleamed in the moonlight. "That. I love that." She whispered.
"Your attitude. You pretend that nothing matters and you don't care but you actually do care more than you think."
"For certain things yes."
She nodded. "I know that you feel like your family doesn't care about you but they do."
"We're not talking about my family. I rather talk about…"
"Lucas, how can you even think about being with someone if you're making it seem like you don't care about your family?"
"Shade, you don't understand."
"Oh, yes I do. I want my father dead, Lucas. I hate him. I don't get along with all the vampires. Half of them are my family. I know a lot of them love me but there's a lot of them that don't because I'm a half breed." Tears came to her eyes.
"I get pushed around where I live. Its not my fault I am what I am. My dad kidnapped a human teenager, raped her and that's how I came to be what I am."
"He raped a teenager to procreate you?" I asked. She nodded. I started to wonder. If my dad was such a bad man, why did my mom and him make me? Maybe…..maybe he raped her. I truthfully didn't want to know.
I wiped her tears from her face and she smiled at me weakly. "I'm sorry. No one should have to go through that." I brought her to my chest and hugged her. She hugged me back and started sniffling. Here I was talking about how I felt like my family was barely there for me and Shade got it worst. I placed my fingers in her hair and she looked up at me. I kissed her lips and she kissed me back and wrapped her arms around my neck. My hands slid down her body and caressed her perfect ass. She giggled and stepped away from me smiling and blushing.
"I knew that'd cheer you up." I said. She smiled showing her dimples.
"You are something else Lucas."
"I know that for a fact." I muttered. She bit her lip.
"I want to see you again, tomorrow night." I said. She smiled and nodded.
"Okay. In this same spot?" She asked. I nodded and grabbed her hand. She brushed her lips against mine and smiled. "Until tomorrow." She whispered. She slowly backed away and was suddenly gone. I wanted her. Why hide it? She clearly wanted me also. This wasn't about to be a cat and mouse thing. Shade is now on my list of people to care about. I wanted her.
