Chapter 1: Am I abnormal?

Lucas’s POV

The wind blew my dark hair over my eyes and I used my fingers to brush it away. It was my birthday. June 3. I was now eighteen years old.

As usual, I was sitting on the roof of the cottage I’ve been living in since the day I was born. I should have been left my family’s house but……for some reason, I’ve been putting it off.

There was leftover blood on my chin and I wiped it away and sighed.

“Hey.” Said a voice. I quickly turned to see my thirteen year old brother, Kaiden standing five feet from me.

“You know mom doesn’t like you up here.” I said. He shrugged and sat beside me. “She doesn’t like you up here either.” He had a good point.

“What’s wrong?” Kaiden asked. I shook my head. “Nothing for you to worry about, little brother. I’m just…..feeling sorry for myself that’s all.”

“Why? Its your birthday. You should be happy.”

“I should be but…..I’m just now realizing that I’ve never been happy.”

“So you’re…….depresssed?” He asked. I shook my head.

“More like angry. I feel like mom and Eric has been lying to me my whole life about who I am and who my dad was. All I know was that he was a wolf and vampire hybrid just like me and his name was Todd. Other than that, there’s nothing else.”

“Why do you want to know so badly? Didn’t they say he was bad?”

“I still want to know. I feel like I don’t really know myself until I find out what my dad was like. But….you wouldn’t understand. Your dad is in the house.” I said.

“He’s like a dad for you.” Kaiden said trying to make me feel better.

“But he isn’t. Me and Eric aren’t related in anyway except by marriage and that’s not good enough. I just want some honest answers for once in my life about who I am.”

“You’re a good big brother, Lucas.” Kaiden said smiling weakly. I bit my lip and placed my hand in his hair. “Good big half brother.” I corrected him. Kaiden shrugged.

“You’re my real brother regardless of what you say.” He said. I stared at him and smiled a little.

We stayed quiet for a little staring up at the dark sky. “Full moon tomorrow night.” I said. Kaiden nodded. “I know. Are you finally going to run with the family tomorrow night?” He asked.

“I like being alone when I run. When I run with the family all these thoughts are running through my head and I can’t get away from it. Sometimes I can’t handle it.”

“I can only hear mom and dad’s thoughts. For now. I can’t hear yours though.”

“I don’t understand why. It’s like my thoughts are blocked. Mom can’t hear my thoughts either.”

“I wish I was like you. It seems like you have better powers since you’re half vampire.” He said weakly. I shook my head. “Blocking my thoughts aren’t a power. Just something that’s been happening. You don’t want to be me, little brother.” I said. He looked back up to the sky and sighed lightly.

“Can I ask you a question?” I asked. He looked at me, his brown eyes wide with curiosity. “Are you scared of me? Truthfully.”

Kaiden thought for a second. “Sometimes, when your anger gets out of control. When your anger is over the top. Also when your eyes become white and when your fangs pop out. You only scare me sometimes.” He said.

“I’m sorry, K.” I said. He smiled.

“It’s okay, Lucas.” He said shrugging.

“One more question?” I asked. Kaiden nodded and looked at me. “How does it feel to be the middle child and not the favorite anymore?” I asked teasingly. Kaiden rolled his eyes. “Akaria is only going to get attention until she’s six. Mom and dad are pretty much doing it every night.” Kaiden said. I snickered.

“You shouldn’t know anything about that, little brother.”

“How can I not? I hear them basically every night.” He said. I smiled.

“They’re adults and wolves . You know wolves feel more lust than normal humans. Its that way for all supernatural creatures.”

“Then you must be suffering. You’re a vampire and a wolf. You must be dying inside.” He said smiling.

I smiled. “Get down before mom finds you.” I said. He nodded once and jumped off of the roof and landed on his feet.

I never worried about Kaiden. He knows what he’s doing. He’s a strong kid. Strong even for a thirteen year old. I protect him. I make sure no one fucks with him or my little sister. Regardless of how over protective mom and Eric are I’m more overprotective over them all. Especially Akaria. She’s a sweetheart. I love her. No one will ever hurt her. No one.

Fuck. I need to hunt. I jumped down from the roof and landed on the ground. I was actually happy to live so close to the woods.

I walked in. I was never scared to go in alone at night time. It was a natural thing for wolves and vampires.

I hope there’s some kind of lost human somewhere around here. Human blood doesn’t just fill the vampire side of me. But the wolf side of me also. I like hunting alone. It was just the silence I enjoyed. I can hear everyone’s thoughts. Everyones. Sometimes it gets to be too much and I want to kill everyone around me just so I can hear the silence again but…..I can’t kill my family.

I stopped walking and looked around me. I smelled the scent of a human but the scent wasn’t strong. It was a human and a vampire I smelled. Was I on the vampire side? Fuck. I hate when I go too far.

It seems like the vampires have a bigger side than the wolves.

“Hey,” I turned around. A girl with black hip length hair was staring at me. She studied me for a small second.

“What?” I asked. She shook her head.

“Nothing. You just……you smell different.” She whispered.

“So do you.” I said stepping closer to her. She bit her lip and took two steps back. “I’m a hybrid.” She said. I nodded. Now it made sense. The strong vampire and the slight human scent.

“Is your mother a vampire or your dad?” I asked.

“Like you care.” She muttered and walked away from me. I bit my lip. For some reason, I felt drawn to her. I don’t know. “Hey, I really want to know.” I said. She turned and looked at me. “Why? Trying to make small talk so you can get into my pants?” She asked. I smirked at her.

“Believe it or not, not all guys are like that.” I said. She scoffed. “Right. I know how all guys are. Fuck us and then leave. That’s how my brother did to his ex and that’s what my father did to my mother.”

“Well aren’t your people vampires? They always turn on those who trust them.”

“I don’t.” She whispered. “And who are your people anyway?” She asked.

“I have a family of wolves I live with.”

“So you’re a werewolf. You smell kind of different.” She said as she walked closer to me.

“How do you know what wolves smell like? Been on the other side?”

“Well I got curious one night. Kind of regretted it though because I saw a man and a woman having sex.”

“That was probably my mother and my step dad.” I was disgusted. They have two kids around them. Why do they always have sex out in the open? That’s so nerve-racking.

“They seem to be in love.”

“They are.” I said.

Her eyes stared into mine. I almost felt lost in hers. “What about you?” She asked. I shrugged. “I can’t be in love. Relationships are too complicated. Plus….I’d just end up leaving the girl anyway….according to you. Because you seem to believe just about all men are pigs.”

“A lot of them are.” She said.

“Well you don’t know every guy. So you can’t tell all their actions. If I had a girl, I would love her and protect her from anybody who wants to fuck with her. Because when I love, I love hard.” I said.

The girl stared at me. Her purple eyes not leaving mine for a second. All half vampires have different colored eyes. No one ever knew why. We figured it had something to do with the mix of vampire and human DNA. “What’s your name?” She asked.

“Lucas.” I answered. She bit her lip and ran her fingers through her black hip length hair.

“Yours?” I asked.

“Shade.” She answered.

“Shade? What kind of name is Shade?”

“What kind of name a Lucas?” She asked.

“The name my mother gave me.” I answered. Shade sighed and looked down at the dirt.

“You know how shades are dark? Almost black?” She asked, her purple eyes connecting with mine again. I nodded.

“She named me shade because of how dark my hair is.” She said. We stared at each other for a while. I have to admit, Shade was unlike any girl I’ve ever seen. Her long black hair curled up at the end and was silky. Her eyes were purple. Almost violent and it was easy to get lost in them. Her skin was pale and flawless and fit perfectly with the pale white dress that stopped just above her knees.

“I have to hunt. I guess…..I’ll see you around.” I said. I wanted to stay and talk to Shade. There was something about her. But…at the same time, I didn’t want to get involved.

“Okay. I’ll….see you around.” She whispered. Her eyes stayed on mine until I turned and walked away. Regardless of how pretty she is, me and her won’t work. Yes we’re both hybrids but we’re different.

I don’t need to be focused on her. I need to be focused on the hunt tonight. I walked out of the woods to the other side.

Should have taken me much longer because the woods stretch out about two hundred feet. I didn’t even realize that I actually was running through them. Okay. Being different, a hybrid, does have its advantages. The speed for one.

I inhaled the air and I could smell something sweet. Not like baked goods or any kind of pastries but I smelled humans. A group of them. They were….probably about two or three blocks away. I’m guessing five. No. Six people. One was slightly father away. I began to follow the smell.

Its been two nights since I hunted. Just haven’t been in the mood to. But I was today. I made it to the block that the six humans were on and invisibly followed behind them making sure not to follow too close.

One girl followed uninterested and not willing to be with the other group. She was looking down at something. Her phone I think. The group of teens were loud and had bottles of alcohol in their hands. I rolled my eyes. As the group of teens crossed the street, I walked beside the girl and stopped in front of her. She jumped and stepped back. “You scared the shit out of me.” She said.

I glared at her.

Her eyes grew wide. “Your….your eyes are white.” She whispered while stepping back. I looked deep into her eyes. Drawing her towards me with my mind. “Come with me.” I whispered. She slowly nodded her head. I grabbed her arm and made her follow me out of the open behind an abandoned house. I pressed her against the house and stared at her. She looked both scared and hypnotized.

“You. Will. Not. Scream.” I said slowly. She nodded her head. I grabbed her dirty blonde hair and pulled her head to the side to expose her neck. I could see the blood pumping through her jugular vein. My fangs extended at her scent. I leaned down and inhaled her.

My tongue came out and licked the side of her neck. I closed my eyes and continued sniffing her. She smelled good. I licked the side of her neck again, her fearful whimpering driving me to taste her. My fangs stabbed her and she gasped and started trying to push me away from her. I held her there and continue to take her blood from her system. I could never just stop. I had to have it all. She began crying and trying to squirm away from me. I kept her in place and licked the blood that spilled on her shoulder and down deeper. I didn’t notice that she stopped fighting. That was exciting. I smiled and stepped away from her. Her limp body slowly fell down to the ground.

Now should I leave her here or dump her in the dumpster? Either way was fucked up. I did always feel a twinge of guilt after I do this. And I always thought it was wrong for a vampire to do something it was supposed to. But maybe not.

Its not easy being a vampire.
