Chapter 4

After Chinai announced that we were leaving the pack had been excited. When they realised where they were headed to, the dog's ears all drooped. Chevy growled and complained about the move, saying that we were all destined to be eaten by wolves. We were going to a very peaceful and quiet vally that was usually swarming with deer. It wasn't a bad place to live, not at all.Unless, that is,you counted the four wolf packs that lived there.

It would be difficult to live there and we'd have to compete with wolves for food, but Chinai insisted that living near wolves was safer than living this close to humans. While we trotted through a small field Turf stopped and sat down sniffing the air. We left him behind and continued forward. A few moments later Chevy stopped to sniff, then an old blind border collie/wolf mix with gray and white instead of black and white, and gradualy the whole pack stopped to sniff including Chinai. I stopped and searched for a smell, but I couldn't smell anything. Somewhere in the distance we heard a human scream and then we could hear wolves howling with joy...a successful kill.

The pack looked sadly to Chinai, waiting for a command. He sniffed the air again...and then came another scream. That time the wolves didn't howl, but we could hear the sounds of a chase that would surely end with a human's death. Chinai eagerly wagged his tail, as if he wanted to go and help with the hunt. He sat wagging his tail for a few more secounds then barked and took off in the direction of the wolves. The bark had said to prepare for a hunt (which meant that he intended to drive something to us). Chevy walked up to me and tilted her head to one side..

" What is he doing?"

A few secounds later three humans appeared, they were so tired that all three stumbled and fell, too tired to get up. Turf and Chinai paced around them barking from time to time, we all came running and the pack encircled them. Chinai lay down and closed his eyes to nap. Turf pawed at his head until he woke.

" So, why are we around the humans again?" Chevy asked sniffing a wound on one of the human's legs.

" The wolves were about to kill them..." Chinai panted.

There were two male humans and a female, they sat up with their backs close together. One of them, the youngest male who seemed to be at leasteleven summers old (I'd seen manyof themthough I'm only three summers old), had a bad injury in it's left hind leg and was in a lot of pain. Chinai eyed it's injury very closely and so did Soar, a small greyish-brown hybird that wasn't even sure of what breed of dog that her mother was. She was a very talented healer who couldheal or cureanything, she had evenonce gotten rid of worms in a puppy. She looked closely at the human's wound and then quickly looked to me...

" Stream, get me some honey comb." She looked to me and barked softly.

" Yes," I wasn't very fond of doing work, but Turf (who was usually the first one to get up when she wanted something) was too tired to do anything but stare at her dreamily.

I headed up in the opposite direction of the pack to a small shady clump of trees which was always teeming with bees. I looked up a tree that was probably twice as tall as a human and saw a large bee hive. I wondered why I wasn't being attacked but didn't worry about it, now all I had to do was get a peice of it.
