I ran down the stairs to the kitchen, where Noah, Mom, and Dad were eating breakfast. I put my sketch book in the middle of the table. I had drawn a picture of a forest on fire and handed it into my art teacher. I got twenty out of twenty on it and I'm very proud of it.
Dad grinned before pulling me into a hug, "It looks amazing, sweetie."
"Bad-ass," Noah grinned as he stared at the drawing.
I looked at Mom, she glanced at it before going back to typing on her laptop.
"What do you think of it, Mom?" I asked.
She pushed her long brown hair out of her face and stared at me with her brown eyes. "I just wish you'd be as good at important school subjects as you are with art. Like your brother, he's passing all of his classes and can write amazing poetry. Why can't you pass your classes and be good at art? That I will never understand," she said before typing again.
Mom has always been like this, stubborn, negative, strict, hard to please. She makes it pretty obvious that my older brother, Noah, is her favourite. I am passing my classes, I just don't get nineties in all of them like Noah does. He's a genius.
"Well, I love it," Dad said. "And don't forget about your doctors appointment tomorrow," Dad reminded me before getting up and going to the living room to watch the news.
Mom packed up her laptop and her sheets before giving Noah a kiss on the forehead and me a small hug. Then she went out the door for work. I sighed before sitting down at the table and closing my sketch book. Noah sat down beside me.
"What doctors appointment?" Noah asked me.
I sighed, "Since I'm fifteen and I still don't have my abilities, Mom arranged a doctors appointment for me tomorrow to see what's wrong with me, I guess," I explained.
I have to admit, I'm glad Mom set up this appointment because I've been getting concerned about my abilities as well. Everyone gets special abilities, supernatural abilities by the time they're twelve or thirteen years old. Your abilities can either be super speed, super strength, controlling fire, shape-shifting, and millions more.
Everyone's abilities are different, some more powerful than others, or sometimes you can have the same abilities as another person. Everyone across the world has supernatural abilities, in fact, if you're a human, you're considered un-normal and dangerous.
"Nothing's wrong with you. I'm sure you're just a late bloomer," he said.
I sighed, "You got your mind reading abilities when you were twelve, you're seventeen now. I'm fifteen and I still don't have my abilities, something is obviously wrong," I said.
He rolled his eyes and stood up, slinging his backpack over his shoulder. Noah is tall, kind of muscular, he has the same dark brown hair as Mom and he had blue eyes that he got from Dad. I have the same dark brown hair as Mom and Noah and I have the same blue eyes as Noah. You can tell we're related just by glancing at us.
"Don;t worry about it, everything is fine. Now, lets get to school before Mrs. Jackie gives us shit again," he siad as he slipped on his sneakers.
I slipped my sketch book into my backpack and slung it over my shoulder. "Do I look okay?" I asked Noah.
He glanced at me before turning his attention back to tying his shoe. "You look fine."
I looked at myself, I was wearing black leggings and a grey hoodie with my black combat boots. I had my brown hair in a high ponytail and my blue eyes were surrounded by black makeup. I sighed at my reflection and turned back to look at Noah, who was already out the door. I ran out the door and caught up with him.
It was now lunch, nothing overly exciting happened... Unless you count a guy spilling milk all over a girl interesting. She actually started crying and went home. I grabbed my packed lunch and headed to the cafeteria, it was crowded with people I've spent most of my life with, yet none of them pay attention to my existence.
I pushed past the people, them giving me glares as I walked away. I went to my usual table, in the back of the cafeteria where I usually sat by myself or with Noah, but he likes to sit with his freiends.
I sat down and started to dig through my lunch, I had the same old Cheese Whiz sandwich with the same old apple juice and the same old peach yogurt with the sme old cereal bar. Mom packs me the same thing everyday, I tried packing my own lunch and failed miserablly, causing a huge mess in the kitchen and only getting myself yelled at.
I took a bite of my sandwich just as I seen Ember and her rat pack walking towards me. Ember is the queen bee of the school, she's a half-demon. She can control fire and she's the strongest of the fire half-demons, it's called Exustio. She loves to brag about how powerful she is with her abilities.
Ember was beautiful, she was tall, thin, she had long blonde hair with orange and red streaks. Her eyes were a golden brown. She basically looked like a flame herself, a gorgeous, bright flame. Her rat pack was tow other girls. One had black hair with silver strands in it, her skin was pale and she wore grey all the time. All I really knew about her was that she was a bitch and could control weather. The third one wasn't as pretty as Ember or the other one, but still cute in a way. She was kind of short, shorter than me. She had red hair that reminded me of Ron Weasley. I knew she could transform into any animal she wanted to.
Ember gave me a small smile before sitting down at my table, the other two rats sat down beside her, across from me. I swallowed my food and continued to look at them. I don't know what they were doing. They've never paid any attention to me until right now. She must be planning something against me.
"So, you're the girl without abilities," Ember said.
I didn't say anything, I continued to look at them.
"I don't know what's so great about you. Kayden sure seems interested in you, I don't see anything that's amazing though," Ember said.
Kayden? Why would Kayden be interested in me? Kayden is the most popular guy in the school. Ember and him have dated a few times but he broke up with her because she was treating all his friends like crap. Kayden, unlike most popular guys, isn't a douchebag. He's actually really nice, from what I've seen anyways.
"What about you? Do you find Kayden... Interesting?" she asked, her voice drowning in curiousity.
I felt the confusion grow on my face, "What do you mean?" I asked quietly.
I'm known as the shy girl in my class. I never speak in class, I never talk to my classmates. I barely talk when I'm at school so Ember must be amazed that she can actually hear what I sound like. I'm also a loner, I guess. I don't have friends here, I had one friend but she died a year ago. I don't like to talk about it.
"Would you be interested in dating Kayden?" she asked.
Is that all anyone cares about nowadays? It seems to be that you need a boyfriend or a girlfriend in order to go through life. I'm fifteen and I'm prfectly happy without a boyfriend, especially Kayden.
"He seems like a nice guy, but I wouldn't date him," I said quietly. "Even if I did want to date him I don't think it's any of your business."
The two girls looked at Ember with shock in their faces. Like they couldn't believe I had just said that to her. Ember ignored them and just smiled at me.
"You got spunk, Normie. I like it. Too bad you have no abilities to add to that spunk. What's it like being different from everyone else?" she asked as she formed a ball of fire in her palm. I stared at it in amazement.
"It's not that bad," I said.
Ember grinned, "Sure it isn't. I think I would just kill myself if I had no abilities. I mean, I'd be useless to the world, I can't do any of the jobs they have. And if you had kids, you would just curse them with the Disease," she said before making the fire disappear.
She has a point. What will I do after I graduate? If I really do have the Disease, then I won't be able to do any of the jobs. The mind readers usually go into law enforcement, they question the suspects, they can tell if they're lying or not.
Necromancers can talk to the dead, they usually go into the detective work, they can talk to the murder victims or see if any ghosts or spirits witnessed the crime. Then there's the healers, they can heal any injury, but can't bring back the dead. They usually become doctors or nurses. Some can even see the future, but they work for the government.
Noah could be right, I could be a late bloomer... A really late bloomer. Or I could be right, I could have the Disease. The Disease is pretty rare, but there's still people who have it. The Disease is where you have all the qualities of a human. Complete humans aren't seen that often, when there is a human, they're sent to the Wasteland. People with the Disease/humans are sent to the Wasteland because they have no use for our world. Humans don't have the abilities to do our jobs, with our abilities, there's less crime and world peace is starting up.
"Wow, she's kind of weird..." Animal Girl said.
"She's just lost in thought. Maybe she's considering offing herself so she doesn't have to go to the Wasteland," Ember said with a smirk.
"I don't have the Disease," I snapped.
Ember looked at me with shock on her face. Then a sly smile grew on her pink lips. She stood up from her seat, "Come on, I have business to attend to," she told Animal Girl and Weather Girl without tearing her gaze away from me.
For the rest of lunch period, I sat alone and ate my food. I watched everyone else, laughing with their friends and joking around. Around here, almost everyone was friends with eachother. Unless you're like Ember and think you're better than everyone else. In that case, you got a few close "friends".
By the time the bell rang for fourth period to begin I was already in English class, sitting in my desk. I watched as the other kids poured into the classroom and took their seats, still talking to eachother until the teacher arrived.
I noticed how most of my classmates would steal glances at me and snicker. After ten or eleven years of being together they never paid attention to me. What changed today? All of a sudden since lunch everyone has been looking at me strange and whispering.
I was pulled from my thoughts when Noah sat down beside me. He placed his English books in front of him and turned to me. "Is it true that you want to have sex with Kayden Thomas?" he asked.
I shook my head immediately, 'No, why would you say that?" I asked him quietly.
"Everyone's been talking about how you have a major crush on Kayden and want to have sex with him at Regan's party on Friday," he said.
Ember must have started a rumour after I told her I had no interest in him, well, just a little bit, but I'm not interested in him that way. I'm just curious about him, like how can he be such a nice guy and hangout with such jerks all the time.
"It's all a lie, I swear. Ember talked to me at lunch, she asked me if I liked Kayden and I said I didn't. Then she told me I probably have the Disease and that I should-"
I stopped myself before telling him that Ember suggested that I kill myself. He would flip shit and possibly punch her across the face and that's the last thing I need right now.
"That you should what?" Noah asked.
"That I should just move to some other city," I lied.
I seen Noah's face boil in anger. I knew that I couldn't lie to him, you know, since he can read minds and all. I don't know why I bothered to lie to him, but why does he bother to ask me if he can just read my thoughts?
"Because it's respectful. You think I like hearing people's personal thoughts? No... Even though it does help when little sisters are lying to my face," Noah said.
Noah is one of those over protective brothers. He doesn't pick on me much because he knows that I get enough of that at school. He only picks on me for little things, but I pick on him too so we're pretty even. We never argue that much, and we never wrestle because I'm thin and have no muscle, he knows he could probably break my bones without even trying.
I was about to respond but before I could get another word out Mrs. Jenkies walked in, our English teacher. Her last name always reminded me of Scooby-Doo.
"You're such a child," Noah whispered with a small smile on his lips.
"Get out of my thoughts!" I whispered back.
Noah just smiled as he opened his books.
I wasn't able to focus at all in class. I kept thinking about Ember and how she made up that rumour. I went to being the girl that never speaks to the girl that wants to sleep with Kayden Thomas. I wonder what Kayden thinks of me now, he's only spoken to me a few times, I never spoke back so he must have already thought I was weird. Now with this rumour travelling thoughout the hallways, he must think I'm really weird now.
I'm glad that Ember is a grade above me, grade eleven, because then I wouldn't have to look at her and know that she's making up lies about me. Noah is in grade twelve, but he's in grade ten english because he failed it when he was in grade ten, now he has to re-do it. I don't know how it all works, but that's what I understand.
Kayden is in grade twelve with Noah, but he didn't fail English like Noah did.
"Only because he got others to do his work for him," Noah whispered as Mrs. Jenkies read out of a book.
"Stay out of my thoughts!" I hissed again.
Noah smiled and pretended to be paying attention to what Mrs. Jenkies was saying. She was reading some sort of poem, I hate poems, so I daydreamed instead.
"Bonnie, what do you think the author was trying to tell us in this poem?" Mrs. Jenkies asked.
My head snapped up at the sound of my name. I seen everyone staring at me and I felt my body stiffen, my words got caught in my throat. I decided to keep my mouth shut before I embarrassed myself even more.
"I think he was trying to say that-"
Mrs. Jenkies interrupted Noah. "Is your name Bonnie?" she snapped at him.
Noah shook his head before shoving his nose back into the book. My book was sitting closed in front of me, which is probably why she called on me.
"Now, Bonnie. Answer the question," she demanded.
"I-I don't know," I stuttered, earning a few snickers from my class. I looked down at my lap, my hair covering my face.
"Well, maybe if you actually opened your book and read along with us, you'll know," she said before turning back to the class.
The bell finally rang and I rushed to my locker. I seen a kid transforming into different celebrities, I assumed he was a shape-shifter. He'll probably work as an undercover cop or something. He transformed into Michael Jackson, he grabbed his crotch, causing his friends to laugh. Then he transformed into Miley Cyrus and he started licking things, causing more laughter.
I passed a tall guy, he had muscles and was huge. He looked like a wrestler almost. He had girls on each arm as he walked through the halls. Judging by his size, I'm going to guess he's a werewolf. He would also be good in the police business, he's be able to track people.
There are other jobs people can do that doesn't involve law enforcement. We still need doctors, dentists, store clerks, that sort of thing. But it's the persons decision of what career they choose.
I wish I had cool abilities to show off to my friends. I do believe I have the Disease, which makes me scared for my life because I know I will no longer be living here. I'll either be sent to the Wasteland or banished from the community, very few get banished.
I believe I have the Disease, but that doesn't mean I do have it. I don't know anything for sure yet, hopefully I'll get an official answer at my doctors appointment tomorrow. Until then, I'd have to survive one more period with being stared at and whispered about.
I was getting my books for my next class when I heard yelling down the hall. I figured it was just some kids screwing around so I ignored it. I closed my locker but then the yelling got louder and it sounded violent.
My curiousity got the best of me and I walked in the direction of the yelling. I pushed past the crowd that was gathered in the hallway to see Noah yelling at Ember. Noah's face was filled with anger and Ember's face was filled with boredom as she watched my brother yell at her.
"What kind of sick person tells someone to kill themself? She belongs here just as much as you do!" he yelled.
"A useless human? What does she have any use to us? She can't do our jobs, that's why humans are sent to the Wasteland. Didn't you pay attention in history class?" she asked.
Noah was going to start yelling again but I stopped him. I put my hand over his mouth and shushed him. He glared at me.
"At least the diseased girl is good for something, shutting up the pathetic mind reader," Ember said.
I turned to her and glared before turning my attention back to Noah. "Let's just go home early, okay? We can get away from all these idiots," I told him
When he nodded in agreement, I removed my hand from his mouth. As we walked by Ember I heard Noah mutter, "Bitch."
We walked home to find Mom and Dad were also home. They must have gotten off work early today. We walked inside and kicked off our shoes. We walked into the kitchen and seen Mom typing on her laptop (as always) and Dad was cooking a grilled cheese sandwich.
Mom is a Dream Wanderer, which means she can go into peoples dreams. There were no jobs that really needed a Dream Wander so now Mom works for the government, she basically helps them decide how they can make the world a better place and all that fun and interesting stuff.
Dad is a Sorcerer, he's basically a male witch. He can use magic and spells and stuff. He also works for the government, but he stays at home to do it, spending most of his time in his office when he's not spending time with us.
Mom looked up from her laptop, "What are you two doing home early?" she asked.
I opened my mouth to explain but Noah beat me to it. "A girl at school told Bonnie to go kill herself," Noah said.
Silence filled the kitchen. I turned around to face Noah. "Thanks a lot," I said. Now we were going to be in big trouble for such a silly reason.
"So you two are skipping classes just because a girl was being mean?" she asked.
"Well, she was being pretty harsh about it and Bonnie was torn up about-"
"I was not! You're the one that started yelling at her!"
"Why are you yelling at me? I defended you!" Noah said.
Mom stood up from the table. "Whose idea was it to come home early?"
I raised my hand slowly, knowing I was going to be in big trouble. Mom was very strict when it came to school. Especially with me because I don't have my abilities yet, she believes that I need as much education as I can get just in case something happens and I won't be able to go to the school anymore.
If you don't have abilities by the age of sixteen, they'll label you as a human and ship you off to the Wasteland. I have no idea why we hate humans so much, I mean, we were full humans at one point. Even now we're still humans, just with special abilities beyond anyone can imagine. I believe that humans can still do our jobs, we may be able to do them better now with these abilities, but humans can still work.
I did a presentation on how I thought we could live with humans when I was in grade seven. It earned me a suspension for three days. Dad got angry and called the school but there was nothing he could do about it, it was a strict rule. Mom was really angry.
"If you weren't so torn up about it then why did you suggest that you two came home early?" she asked.
I shrugged, "I don't know, I just wanted to stop Noah from making a bigger mess out of it. Besides, this girl made up a rumour about me and everyone was staring at me all the time. I needed to get away from that."
I knew Mom wouldn't be happy with my answer, but I didn't expect her to start yelling at us the way she did. After she lectured us on how important education is and how stupid we were being, we got sent to our bedrooms for the rest of the day. I was fine with the punishment, I spend most of my time in my room anyways. I always draw and listen to music, but Mom took away my sketch book, sketch pencils, and my iPod. I found it unfair but accepted it as I closed the door to my room for the rest of the day.
