Josh slumped against the white wall outside his class, older kids shoving past. He was chewing a piece of flavourless gum, sighing as one of his classmates shoved someone into the wall, swearing. The hall could do with a lick of paint; there were dozens of marks where blu-tack had held up posters, and the paint was peeling. The only freedom pupils had with their clothing was their bags, so they loaded them with badges, and hung various keyrings from the zips. The classroom door swung open, and Josh's maths teacher, Mrs Thompson, poked out her head.
"Come in, come in," she said, holding the door open. Josh walked into the classroom, found his desk and swung his bag under his chair. He sat down, resting his chin on his hand and staring out of the window. The kids around him were chatting and comparing new phones, only stopping when Mrs Thompson gave them her most evil glare. She shut the door behind her as the last student strolled through the door, showing he didn't care he was late.
"Matthew, Susan, could you shut the blinds?"Mrs Thompson asked, flicking through a file stuffed with paper. The two kids got up, annoyed at being single out, and pulled the cords on the blinds.
"Thank you," she chirped, as they returned to their seats. She un-capped a black marker, and wrote the date and the title Algebra on the board. A few people groaned, Josh among them.
"Good morning! Today we are doing some revision for Algebra, as your tests are- Kyle, for Christ's sake, do up your tie properly! That's better. As I was saying, your tests are coming up soon, and the results will determine which set you are in next year. To help get you started, I've set up this powerpoint."
Mrs Thompson got out her remote, and turned on the projector. Josh sighed. Just another hour to get through.
Josh spotted his best friend Ollie walking towards the canteen as he left the classroom. He pushed the stiff door leading outside open, and ran up to him. He covered Ollie's eyes from behind.
"Guess who!"Josh said, disguising his voice as best as he could. Ollie paused.
"Definitley a girl" Ollie said, a grin spreading across his face. Josh removed his hands from Ollie's eyes, and gave him a shove.
"Piss off," he said, smiling.
They entered the canteen, and began to queue up.
"Ugh. Got science after lunch," Ollie moaned, picking up a tray and cutlery.
"Hah! Unlucky! I have art," he said smugly, ignoring the top tray with a splodge of custard on and pulling one from the bottom.
"No fair!" Ollie complained. Josh stuck his tongue out at him, and stepped forward as the kid in front was served. Josh studied the menu: Beef Burger with Pea's and Chips
Cheese and Tomato Pizza slice
Spaghetti Bolognese or Pasta with Tomato sauce
Josh smirked at the cook's bad grammar.
"What are you gonna have?" he asked Ollie. Ollie shrugged.
"I've only got two options, being veggie, so I guess I'll get pizza," he said, grabbing a slice. Josh took a burger and went to pay.
