Chapter 1: Einstein and Darwin

I reluctantly woke up to my alarm clock. Unfortunately it was the first day of school. I quickly got dressed in a plaid mini skirt, plaid flats and a tight fitting t-shirt. Last but not least I put my red sunglass like goggles around my neck. ( They were mine and Gabriel’s signature.)

After I was done getting ready I crept quietly down the stairs so I wouldn’t frighten my mother. Who probably crashed on the couch. As I walked past the couch I picked up all of the bottles of booze on the floor and on the coffee table. My mom had been an alcoholic ever since my father left us for another woman.

After I disposed of the empty bottles I grabbed a glass of water and a couple aspirins. "Hello, Alex." I heard my mother say as I set the glass and aspirin on the coffee table.

"Today’s my first day of school. Will you be alright by yourself?" I asked turning to her.

She nodded. "You need your education."

Just then I heard a car horn. "I have to go Gabe is here." I kissed her on the cheek and went out the door. On the way to Gabriel’s yellow camaro I ran my hands down the side my father’s old black corvette which was still in the drive way because he got a better car. "Hey Gabriel." I said getting in on the passenger side with a slight smile.

"Hey, mother’s still drinking?" I nodded my head and he shrugged his shoulders. He knew that was a touchy subject with me. "Any ways speaking of mothers; my mum keeps bugging me about it. I swear if she asks one more time I’m going to tell her never."

I laughed, "How about tonight? When you drop me off you can watch TV or something while I quickly make my mom supper."

"Sounds great." He said smiling.

When we walked down the halls of school every thing was just like every year before. People were either ignoring us or giving us dirty looks. "What have we ever done to them?" I asked slamming my locker door after putting my bag in it.

"They don’t like people who aren’t like them." Gabriel said while pulling his goggles over his head.

"Well that’s just plain stupid." I said leaning against my locker.

"Look at it this way, if they don’t like us the way we are than tough shit. At least we’re not the posers. Besides we are the ones that are going to make a difference in the world. You never see people who went with the crowd do anything great but you do always see the out casts make a difference. Look at Albert Einstein or Charles Darwin."

I rolled my eyes at him. "Albert Einstein helped create the atom bomb and every one thought Darwin was crazy. Besides he was really popular to begin with."

"I guess your right but Albert Einstein said he regretted his role in creating the atom bomb and to replace Darwin lets use Bill Gates, he was a nerdy little person."

I rolled my eyes again. "What ever."

"Hey don’t roll your eyes at me." He pointed a finger at me jokingly. "Fine then think of it this way. At least you have a mind of your own unlike all of these zombies." He started to walk around like a zombie, which made me laugh.
