Stepping out of the tree lined path, the first thing I noticed was the smell. Kinda like fresh baked cookies, and smoky campfires, and smoked meats, and fruits. It all hit me at once, and somehow all these scents blended perfectly together. I heard laughter, and cheerful sounding voices, but I didn't know what they were saying. I turned to Sarah/Starfire.
"Do not worry," She said, before I had a chance to speak. "Our kind is fluent in every single language ever invented. We will speak English for you."
I stared at her for a moment, mouth hanging open. "No way. Every single language? Prove it. Um, say something in French."
"Alex, vous êtes un crétin. Je ne pense même pas que vous sauriez si cela était le français, alors comment est-ce une preuve pour vous? Vous n'avez pas à assumer! Garçon idiot!"*
It certainly sounded French. "Um... Spanish!"
"Alex, mi stanco di questo gioco infantile del tuo. Io parlo tutte le lingue, anche quelle inventate nei tempi antichi, come la lingua dei Sumeri parlavano.*** Jeg finder dig ekstremt irriterende, så dette kommer til at stoppe nu****. Those first two sentences were in Italian. The rest was Danish. Are you satisfied?"
"I'll be using Google Translate on you."
"You go ahead and do that Alex. If you can find a computer nearby, that is." she said scornful laughter in her voice.
I walked away from her, agitated, and into the village
The street we walked on seemed like some kind of market place, with shops and stands and people milling about. The more we walked, the bigger the buildings got, and the more serious people seemed. We walked on and on, and soon all I saw were grim looking warriors, none stopping to chat to their fellows, just walking briskly and with purpose. I looked towards Sarah/Starfire questioningly.
"War." she said simply, and we kept on walking in silence. We eventually reached a large stone building with no windows and only one door. We filed through the door one by one.
It was all one big room, no other doors but the one that leads out. The walls seemed endlessly high, and the ceiling was made of glass, so we could see the crystal blue sky above.
"Tamwyn!" Sarah/Starfire barked at the one guy who seemed to tolerate her. He raised his eyebrows at her, but said nothing. "How are we soposed to live here with him? They have given us no supplies! No separate rooms! How long must we be here with him?" She turned to the others who were standing there, looking uncomfortable. "You are dismissed" she said curtly, and they all shuffled out appreciatively. She glanced at me, then Tamwyn, and then said angrily "I am going to go request bunks." She stormed out. I stood there awkwardly for a moment, before Tamwyn started to laugh. I looked up at him in surprise. He smiled at me.
"Well come on then, lets go on a tour of your new home."
We left the dull gray building, and I decided I like this guy.
*"Alex, you're a moron. I do not even think you would know if it was French, so how is this a proof for you? You do not incur! Idiot boy!"
**"Alex, you still do not know what I'm saying, how will this prove anything?"
***Alex, I'm tired of this childish game of yours. I speak all languages, even those invented in ancient times, as they spoke the language of the Sumerians.
****I find you extremely annoying, so this is going to stop now
