Prologue

It was nearly ten years since the end of the Earth Wars of the late twenty-third century. Humans had organised themselves into Clans and gone to war against the military who had taken control of the planet after the collapse of the United World Government. Earth was all but destroyed in the ensuing battle, and one by one, the Clans left Earth and headed out into the stars.

One of the first Clans to leave established themselves on a planet called Aquagius. A cold frigid world with seventy-five percent of the surface covered in ice. It had taken a lot of lives to build the underground base where the Clan now lived in relative warmth. Their leader, Pharran, ruled the Clan together with his sons, Zareli and Dumarrak. They were twins, but they couldn’t look any more different.Dumarrak was slightly built, with his trademark shaven head. What he lacked in muscular strength, he made up for in brain power. He was the thinker, the planner, the one with all the schemes and ideas. On the other hand, Zareli was virtually pure muscle, and although he too had a shaven head, he’d kept one section of his hair on the top long, plaited through with bits of wire and leather.Their tenacity had earned them the reputation of being one of the toughest clans to survive. They were known as the IceWarrior Clan.

Other Clans quickly followed and established themselves. Amongst them were the NightStorm Clan who established their base on Del'ghao. Led by Vysani, they had a reputation for working under the cover of darkness, attack by stealth was their speciality.

The last of the Clans to leave Earth was the LightStar Clan. Their belief system was similar to the Pagan traditions of Earth. They had distanced themselves from the Earth Wars and had been painstakingly gathering all the knowledge they could find and storing it in a vast database. When they finally left Earth shortly before it became uninhabitable, one of their ships was dedicated solely to the knowledge they had accumulated. They found a planet not too dissimilar to Earth and called it Iosera, and having discovered vast underground caverns, quickly established The Vaults to store their wealth of knowledge.
Although Glevyn was their leader, he had Elders who worked with him. To achieve the status of Elder, you had to reach a level of awareness that transcended every day existence. Very few could cope with the strict discipline that was necessary to reach such a level.

Evahlia was not only an Elder, but also Glevyn’s granddaughter. She was the only true Telepath in the Clan, although most were Empaths. Sadly, not long after The Vaults were established, Glevyn passed away.
It was understood that Evahlia would take her grandfathers place, but instead she persuaded the Elders to allow Tarais to lead the Clan. He and Evahlia had been lovers for a while on Earth, but it was with some reluctance that the Elders accepted him as leader.

The military already had an abandoned space station in the area from previous attempts by Earth to colonise the galaxy. They quickly followed the Clans out into space and set up their base on the old Pentaugh space station. General Xane Tirath had vowed to continue the war until the last of the Clans were either bought under military control…or obliterated from the face of the galaxy.
However, over the course of the last ten years, the military suffered more losses than any of the Clans and the generals patience was wearing thin.

There was one other planet that was considered neutral territory for all the Clans. Kalocia was it’s formal name, but it was known as the hell hole of the galaxy. It was the one place were no one wanted to live, but sadly those who bought dishonour to their Clan, or for whatever reason had to leave, found the only place to go was Kalocia. It was a collection of ramshackle buildings, mainly bars and gambling dens. The Clans met there to discuss the war, and drank to forget it. Women were cheap and plentiful. An almost permanent twilight hung over Kalocia and there was only two types of weather, wet, and wet and stormy. But for all the appearance of total chaos, it’s defence system had kept the military out for the duration of the war. Some had tried to gain access, disguised as Clan members. Their cover was quickly blown, usually they were despatched back to the military in pieces.

As they had on Earth, the LightStar Clan distanced themselves from the ongoing war. They had respect from all the Clans because of The Vaults, and for now, the military was leaving them alone.
