Prologue
The night was still. The flickering lights from distant streetlights resembled fireflies. The trees gently stirred with the night breeze. It could almost be described as peaceful.
Hurried footsteps broke the quiet. Hooded figures hurried along a park path. “Aislynn! We have to hurry!” A male voice whispered urgently glancing behind him fearfully grasping the hand of the smaller figure behind him. “Gregory, I’m so tired. Please, can we rest?” Aislynn pleaded. Her voice was like music even as exhausted as she obviously was. “I don’t think I can go on for much longer.” She immediately stumbles over something on the path and immediately drops to her knees. “Aislynn!” Gregory exclaims catching her before she falls completely onto the ground. There is a sound of running footsteps. A voice echoes into the night with deathly calm. “Spread out. Find them. Bring them to me.” The voice sends ice into Gregory’s veins and causes Aislynn to tremble visibly. “They’re getting closer. If we do not hurry they will be upon us.” She shakes her head. “You have to go on without me.” He in turn shakes his head, “No, I won’t leave you. You are the hold the fate of our world in your hand.” He looks behind him once more and hangs his head submitting to what he had to do. He reaches down and caresses her face. “You also hold my heart in your hands.” She closes her eyes at his statement and turns her face into his hand. “I’ve waited so long for you to admit your feelings for me.” He leans down allowing their lips to meet for a fleeting moment. He then pulled her to his chest burying his face in her hair. “I am going to wait until they are closer and then I will lead them away from you. Listen to me!” He commanded when she pulled away shaking her head vehemently fearing for his well-being. “ When they have been gone for at least five minutes I want you to go quickly to the portal.” She pulled away from him turning to sit on a near by boulder. “I’m not leaving without you!” Gregory marched over to her grasping her shoulders and began to shake her roughly. “We can not think of ourselves now. There are people depending on the both of us. To focus on our feelings now would prove disastrous and therefore we can’t no matter how much either of us want to!” A tear shimmered down her cheek. His grip on her shoulders loosened. He reached up a hand to wipe the tear away. His eyes also had a mysterious shine to them. “Please,” he whispered, “Just do as I say. For the sake of our world.” She stared into her eyes for a moment before looking down and nodding. He pulled her to him in a final hug then he ran out onto the main path. “Hey!” One of the searching figures called spotting Gregory. “Over there!” The rest of the sinister looking men turned and followed him away from my position. When the men could no longer be seen she stumbled broken towards a shimmering spot in the distance before vanishing into thin air.
