Chapter 1

I've had my birthmark for as long as I can remember. Well duh, that's why it's called a BIRTH-mark. My mom said that it's natural and to be proud of it. She was. But that didn't get her far did it? I always tried to hide it. Makeup, longer hair, turtleneck shirts, I even tried laser removal once! But nothing ever worked. It seemed to glow through everything, even if my mom said it was my imagination. Which it wasn't. Mom. Stupid me. All my fault...

My name is Midnight Luna Abeo Aerumna Celeste Curiosa Distinctus Vira Atra Opulentia Cora Belle. I know. It's long. My face burns red just saying it and it really was a chore to learn to spell in kindergarten. I don't even know what over half of it means! My mom was really crazy to bestow me with such a terrible name!So just call me Midnight.

I'm a bit nutty. It's not really my fault. My mom was nuttier than me. But I think it's this necklace my mom gave me because ever since she gave it to me, my life's been going down a downward spiral. Funnily enough, it looks just like the birthmark on the lower left part of my neck. The necklace, not my life that is. I know it's a strange shape for a birthmark and a necklace but nothing I can do about that. Maybe that's why mom gave it to me. Because it's special. She used to tell me I'm special... Mom... (P.S. the picture is the picture next to the title [i couldn't get it to show up].)

Why did mom have to go? Nutty as she was, she left me to fend for myself. She was sick, we both knew that, but it was my fault. I yelled at her before she... I wanted to know what giving me her necklace would do to help. I don't know if it was my outburst that took away her will to live or me actually taking the necklace she offered that did it but something did. I believe that it was a combination of both, that her necklace held the little bit of energy left to her and she relied on my love and support to keep her alive... Mom... Crazy, eccentric, nutty, strange, funny, mom...

You have a destiny Midnight, agreat one. Can you hold this responsibility? For the world may depend on you one day... Her voice fades into the darkness as I jerk awake with a gasp. "Mom?" I whisper into the dark. Only a dream. I turn on my small side light that provides barely enough light to see by, leaving the dark corners of my room still dark like the strange, dark secrets of my life. Looking in the mirror, I see a 17 year old girl with hair as black possible, oddly gray-silver eyes (that turn light blue in the sun), and a black nightgown hanging loosly around her shoulders, exposing her oddly shaped birthmark. I sigh and brush my hair over the birthmark, though it does not help to hide it. It seems to glow the design through my hair. I sigh again and check my clock. 3:00 AM. Not again. Fourth week in a row, always 3:00. Back to bed.

Morning comes with a cup of cofee, an energy bar and a quick morning commute, although it would be faster if I owned a car. I blow through the whole schoolday with little incident. Speaking only when spoken to, I hope to make it through the day with little more than two-word answers. Until the new boy comes. He has messy dark brown hair and an enchanting smile. The other girls are smitten but I don't even chance him a second glance. But he gives me one. I'm walking out the door at the end of the day and suddenly he's in front of me. He tries to engage me in conversation.

"Hey," he says. I don't answer. "I'm Toby. What's your name?" Usually telling people my full name confuses them and they think I'm mocking them and that I'm stuck up. Then they leave. "Midnight Luna Abeo Aerumna Celeste Curiosa Distinctus Vira Atra Opulentia Cora Belle," I say simply. His face turns to confusion then what looks like... Admiration? "That's a pretty cool name!" He says happily. Crap. I keep walking hoping he lives in the opposite direction. Woops. "Hey I live this way too!" He says when we turn towards my street. Oh god... He doesn't live in the empty house next door does he? I think to myself. Yep. He does. "Hey cool! We're neighbors!" he says with a childish smile as I walk towards the house left to me by mother in her will. Crap, crap, and more crap. Now I've got a stalker... "Guess I'll see you tomorrow, erm, Midnight Luna Abeeoo Celeste Aroma Curiouso Distincto ViratroCoro Bella!" I hear him call (totally screwing up my name in the process)as I step over the threshold and into the dark house that reminds me so much of mother. Mom...

Midnight... Midnight... I jerk awake. 3:00 again. Will this ever end? Will I ever get a good night's sleep?! I think desperately. Back to bed.
