Obsessive Envy

As Corinne layed down herstuff on the brown desk, the English teacher called her name as loud as she could up to the front of the class. She quickly made her way up when all her books dropped. Soon she was out of breath, surprisingly. When she finally got up there after dropping her books she was breathing hard.The teacherlooked at Corinne with a mixture of surprise and concern along with confusion.

"Corinne...I would like you to know that your mother called." She said in a disturbed voice.

"What, what happened?"Corinne asked in fear seeing the teacher.

"There is a call waiting for you in the office." She said clearing her thoat and holding tears back.

Corinne hesitated as she turned around.The lighted room gleamed around and hit off her expression. She quickly met up with Ben who was sitting at his desk staring right up at her. His eyes shot away as he could tell she was troubled.

"Is everything alright?" He quickly came to her height and got close.

"I don't know," Corinne quickly shot back a smile hiding whatever she wassupposed to be worriedabout.

As the class began to start Corinne picked up all her books and headed out the door for the office. She slowly walked through the white halls trying to avoid the trouble she might face. Though the office door came quicker than expected.

"Oh, Corinne, we've got your mom on the other line. She's been on hold for twenty minutes." The secretary chuckled with a bit of sadess.

"Okay, thanks." She said with horror as she found no humor in this serious matter.

"Hello?-" Corinne was quickly cutoff with a quick voice.

" Hi, Honey. Your sister has cancer, Delila has lung cancer,"She said reassuringly with tears coming through the phone.

"Mom, What? Is she in the hospital?" Corinne said trying tomake sure she heard right.

"Don't worry,she's in good hands."

"Good."

"Okay, you better get back class." She said clearing her throat."

"Okay , by mom, I love you. Stay strong. " Corinne comforted her mom trying to comfort herself. Then she gave the phone back to the secretary.

The walk back seemed to pass by quicker while Corinne was stuck in thought.One she got back to her class shefelt asif the day was going very slow. Corinne just couldn't get it out of her mind.The day finally ended with the bell and everyone was out ina flash wanting to go home. When she got up she saw Ben waiting in the doorway with his crazy, beautiful smile. She instantly got up and shoved her way passed Ben and ran out the door with him beside her.

"So what happened?" Ben asked as if he was wondering all day.

"I guess Delilah has Lung Cancer." Her eyes slowly followed the sidewalk as they walked.

"How do you feel?" He asked with compassion.

"Um.....afraid." She answered with confusion.

"Don't worry." He replied putting his arm around her.

The rest of the walk home was silent and Corinne just kept her head down. The street was dim and crowded with school kids finding their way home. Her shoulders tensed up realizing Ben had took his arm off her's a couple minutes ago. Though, Corinne's heart shook as she stepped closer and closer around the block of street.

Then it hit me.

"I did see her walk out at lunch with the nurse!" She cried in surprise.

"Who?" Corinne could tell he was surprised withher introduction.

"You know my sister, Delilah! She left....early!!" She screamed pausing in her steps.

"I saw her, too. but she looked fine to me."

"Your right......."She ended with a long moment of thinking.

When they finally got a couple of feet away from Corinne's house she stopped, leaving Ben to start in front of her. Then he stopped. None of them said anything until Ben saw Corinne grab her chest and fall to the ground.

The pain was unbearable. My throat felt like it was closing in. I couldn't get air. My heart beat sped up and everything spun around me. Was I having a heart attack? All I knew was that Ben had picked me up and started shouting for help while frequently whispering something to me.I was so out of breath now and I could feel his hand on my chest.

"Oh, Cory, stay with me, don't leave me." He cried as he tried to help her.

Then, as the air started to come through everything became dark....very dark. The white light became purple and red and Ben started running even harder. He was holding my hand the whole time. I started to close my eyes and then everything went black.

Warm air slowly crept through Corinne's eyelids. The light made her blink as she tried to open her eyes. The first thing she saw was Ben and her mom staring with intense eyes as she layed on her couch.

"Where is Delilah?" She asked while jumping up to find Ben stand up to catch her.

"At the hospital." Mom said starting to cry, "Let's go so we can check you out, too. Are you okay?"

"Yes, I guess I'm fine. How do they know she has Lung cancer?"

"When you guys went for your appointments, the doctors said one her tests showed very strange readings Thus, lung Cancer." Her mom rubbed Corinne's shoulder.

"Oh, well, can we go now?" Corinne quickly ran out to the car and got in the back seat while Ben sat beside her.

When the car was parked all of them jumped out only to see a doctor standing right outside.

"Ms. Dee Ann-"Corinne'smom cut him off.

"We need to see Delilah now!" She scowled.

"But-"

Then He was cut off again when she grabbed Ben and Corinne's hands and pulled us inside to see Delilah. Corinne really thought they should have listened to the doctor. Ben and her just exchanged confused looks as she pulled them to room 319. The only problem was that Delilah wasn't in there.

Oh man, if only you saw the look on my mom's face.....terrified. This is what happened when my dad died. She was coming to visit him and his room was empty.......only to find out that he had died. I also, started to tear up because I didn't want this again.

Then Corinne felt a small tap on her shoulder. When Corinne turned around she saw Delilah...her little body, witha big grin. Corinne yelled in excitment finding herself out of breath again....also, very dizzy. Then she looked up to see the doctor rushing towards them waving a couple papers. His expression, furious..probably because of howCorinne's mom-she was cut off.

"Ms. Dee Ann!"He yelled very fast hoping not to get cut off again.

"What!" Mom yelled back offended.

"Delilah is fine....it's Corinne....She has Lung Cancer. We got the tests mixed up." He probably said this without realizing me in the back.

Eveyone turned to me with a confused and scared expression.
