Chapter Twelve

“Good morning sunshine!” Mitsoki yelled in my ear, leaning over the bed post. My eyes fluttered open as I was abruptly woken up.

“Eh…” I muttered, rubbing my eyes. “What time is it?” I managed to ask.
“Why do you wanna know?” he asked suspiciously, then leaped off of the bed and down beside me.
I covered my eyes with my hands, noticing the lights were on.
“Get up!” he ordered and took a hold of my wrists, bringing me to my feet.
“Hey, what’s the hurry?” I asked, still half asleep.
“Some guys are here for you.” he explained, not sounding very excited anymore. He raised an eye brow. “Are you secretly dating anyone?”
I waved him off. “Who are they?”
He shrugged. “Beats me. Never seen them in my life.”
I was suddenly way too curious to just stand there and day dream. I went to the door but before opening it I asked, “Are they out there?”
            Mitsoki sneered. “Uh, dah.”
I swung open the door to see a sad, dirty face of a depressed Fumio. I grasped him in my arms.
“Fumio, oh my God, are you alright? Where’s Tomo?!” I moved him out of the way to see if Tomo was behind him. I looked to all sides but no sign of him. “Where is your brother?” I repeated.
Tears streamed down his face and I didn’t even want to listen to what he was going to tell me.
“I think Tomo is dead . . .” he began but was cut off by his own sobs. I struggled to grasp that. He couldn’t be dead. I wanted to know what killed him but was afraid to ask, I didn’t want to cause him more pain. I pulled him close to me as he just cried. I decided not to say anything more.
I felt Mitsoki’s presence behind me, I could hear him breathing.
“What happened?” he came up behind me and whispered in my ear.
I shook my head as if to say, “I’ll tell you later.” Even though Mitsoki wasn’t the brightest he understood and backed off. He shut his cottage door with him inside as I held Fumio close to me outside. After a while of saying nothing I decided to speak up.
“What can I do to help you?” I asked gently.
He looked up at me with his big eyes, sniffed once, and stated very bluntly, “Kill the Forest Monster.”

Fumio decided to take me to where his brother is. While we walked I tried to decide a plan to kill this thing. I had no weapons. Nothing but the golden stake Raiden gave to me, but that was only to be used if I was about to die. I didn’t want to be a murderer but this creature killed my friend and I needed to help someway.
The only mistake we made was taking Mitsoki along with us.
He skipped ahead quickly, asking me random questions as I stayed behind to walk with Fumio.
“Can you fly?” That was a stupid question asked by Mitsoki.
I sneered. “Yeah of course I can just look at my beautiful wings.” I snapped sarcastically.
“Someone’s grumpy.” he murmured, tilting his head back to look at me.
            I rolled my eyes.
            “Can you breathe underwater?”
I halted in my place. “NO, I am NOT a FISH!” I yelled. Mitsoki stopped prancing around and looked at me, offended. That only lasted a momentarily before he began to skip around again.
“Humans are BORING.” he exclaimed loudly.
I shrugged. “Whatever.” I turned to Fumio. “How long till we get there?”
“Well first we are going to meet up with a guy I asked to come. I met up with him earlier before I came here. I told him what I wanted done and he said he would help.”
I was shocked. “Then why do you need me? What am I gonna do?”
“I thought you were my friend.” He pouted.
            I sighed. “You are.”
            “So you’re gonna help me?”
I pondered that. How in Delusia could I help him? I would have to find a way.
“So who is this person we are meeting?” I asked.
“He should be here any time now . . .”
We were just entering a forest and I wasn’t sure what kind of forest it was. It couldn’t be normal and it definitely couldn’t be safe. No place was safe here, at least for a human.
I saw a figure in the distance behind a few trees. It was moving but I couldn’t tell if it was moving to or away from us.
“What is he?” I whispered to Fumio, just in case this figure was who we were supposed to be meeting.
Fumio looked up at me again, the same reluctance reflecting in his expression. “Uh, well . . .”
The boy appeared from out of the shadows, he wore a black robe, and he had blonde hair spiked up. I looked at him curiously, attempting to decipher what he was. I couldn’t tell, it wasn’t obvious.
The boy was looking at me right away as he approached our little group. I actually became sort of nervous. I backed up a little, having the urge to grab Mitsoki’s arm and yell, “Stay away!” I stood right beside Mitsoki, attempting to wear a fake smile.
“No one told me about this.” he stated angrily pointing to me, his gaze focused on Fumio.
Fumio fumbled with words. “Well, uh-,”
“No one told me a human would be involved.”
That was it! This is the last straw! “WHAT DOES IT MATTER IF I AM A HUMAN!” I practically screamed in his ear.
He stared bluntly at me, utterly shocked for a moment. “Shut up.” he told me simply and pulled out what appeared to be a stick and pointed it at my mouth. I almost went cross eyed looking at it, trying to figure out what it was. I tried to open my mouth to ask but it wouldn’t open. I tried again but failed. It was stuck! Like it was glued shut!
I began to mumble, trying to make sense of what was happening. The guy ignored me and continued to argue with Fumio over me being here with them.
Fumio told him I was his friend and I was going to help kill the beast that killed Tomo. I tried to pry open my mouth with my hands but it was no use. Mitsoki stood in front of me trying to make sense of what happened as well. He tried to open my mouth too.
“What the heck?” he asked, scratching his head.
“For goodness sake I am a wizard!” he yelled at us. Mitsoki and I became silent (well I stopped mumbling that is) and stared at him. “Idiots.” he murmured to himself and turned back to Fumio.
“Let her talk.” Mitsoki ordered, interrupting.
The guy was kind of surprised that Mitsoki spoke up to him. “No.” he snapped and pointed his “wand” at Mitsoki. Mitsoki moved very quickly then, nearly jumping in the air and grabbing the wand from him.
“Can’t do magic without a magic wand, eh?” Mitsoki teased, tossing it in the air.
The boy growled in fury but then relaxed, took a deep breath, and pushed his hands on in front of him. With that, Mitsoki went flying back through the air and landed a few meters away.
As I witnessed that I charged straight up to that son of a wizard and punched him straight in the face. He didn’t fall to the ground, but it did knock him off balance. I have never punched anyone before which led to me not knowing how much force I could actually give out. I stared at my fist in astonishment, so did Fumio. I saw Mitsoki get up and just realize what I had done.
The expression on that boy’s face was enough to scare me.
“No, Hikaru, let her go.” Fumio ordered loudly and abruptly.
Just as Fumio said that, Hikaru ran up to me, grasping my shoulders tightly. I couldn’t speak so what else could I do but look him straight in the eyes? Maybe he would see my sympathy, even though I barely had any.
“If you mess with the wrong people, bad things can happen.” Hikaru explained to me. “Watch your mouth.”
I began mumbling insensible things. I knew what I was saying, I was saying, “I CAN’T watch my mouth it is shut tight so HOW can I talk at all?!” I wasn’t sure if Hikaru understood, I doubt he did, but I wanted him to just open my mouth!
“If you shut up I will let you open your mouth.” he finally compromised.
I nodded urgently. I needed to stop taking action before thinking over it first.
He picked up his wand that was on the ground and pointed it to me once more. My mouth was unglued.
            I breathed out. “Thank . . . you.” I muttered.
“So, where is this ‘beast’?” Hikaru asked Fumio.
Fumio thought, his eye brows scrunching together. “Around here somewhere.” he managed to reply. Me, Hikaru, and Mitsoki followed Fumio deep into the dark forest. I could tell you I was scared, but I would be half lying. The dark was the only thing that kind of frightened me. Being in the forest wasn’t a bother, though.
“Jamie, over there.” Fumio finally stopped us and pointed to thick bushes up ahead. They were moving slightly. Something was just behind them. I felt my legs turn to jello and I suddenly regretted coming here. I could turn and run now, but that would make me look like a quitter. Not a good time to back out now.
“Don’t be scared.” Mitsoki told me from behind as he put his hands on my shoulders.
I smiled back at him and scoffed. “Scared? I’m never scared.” I chuckled but my voice was shaky. Obviously I was lying.
“I’ll go over here.” Hikaru whispered and tip toed to the right of the beast behind the bushes. I watched him hesitantly and I wanted to tell him to be careful but at the moment I remembered I despised him so I kept my mouth shut. Fumio ducked and silently went around the other side. That left me in the front with Mitsoki behind me.
I finally decided to move my feet and I crept closer to the bushes. The forest around us was now dead silent. I gripped the golden stake in my hand, ready to pull it out if needed. I felt Mitsoki nearly breathing down my neck.
I was about to tell him he didn’t need to be so close and that I would be fine but instead I felt someone twine their hand with mine. I looked down at our hands and then looked up at Mitsoki. Before I could speak the unspeakable happened.
            Mitsoki kissed me.
