***

I pull away from fright that once ceased

Then fate gripped me in its hold and hasn’t released
Of the secret of their otherworldly ties—
Giving the world but deadly lies—
Of the truth that was once hidden
And to speak of it shall be forbidden
And other allies have been spoken
And unyielding trust will be broken
Two worlds clash with the fact of one gem
The power it holds shall never get to them
For if it does the world shall be outdone
And in all reality I would be the one—
Who dropped the lives and let them fall
Be known as one who lost it all
But humanity is stronger than will
To stop all who still wish to kill
To step my foot down on the plate
And halt the opening of an otherworldly gate

Prologue—Unexpected Thriller
I smacked the volleyball off the palm of my hand and watched it pop into the air and plummet to the ground where a teammate of mine was crouched over ready to bump the ball back over the net.
“Mine!” I shouted and got under the ball, bumping it back over.
This continued until the end of my practice.
Sweat dripped down my forehead and over my cheek. I wipe it away and jog to my towel that rested on top of my sports bag. I’ve been on the newly created volleyball team of my high school and knew it was my sport the moment the ball hit the palm of my hand. Practice three hours a day for five days a week is a tough task to pull off, but I was tough, I handled it just fine, also trying to fit in family, friends, and of course, Johnny.
I saw the tall, dark haired boy leaning up against the main doors of the gym. After I cleaned up and slipped off my knee pads, I raced over to him and threw my bag at him.
“Gee Alyssa, let me carry that for you.” he teased as he threw the strap over his shoulder. I rolled my eyes. “How was practice?” he asked not too curiously.
“You would know. You’ve been watching.” I told him smartly. “And listening.”
“How do you figure?” He raised an eye brow.
I sighed out and attempted to reach up and wrap my arm around his shoulders. It was a struggle. “I know you by now.”
“It’s only been a year.” he spoke in defense for himself but knew in reality I was right. I knew more about him than his former friends did and they’ve known each other for hundreds of years. But we forgot about them awhile ago. Johnny found new friends here at the school, making sure not to get too close so his secret isn’t revealed and his sanity doesn’t slip. If he messed up just one time, he could never come back here, and everyone would point fingers at me, because everyone knows we have been together for awhile now. The longest relationship I’ve ever kept up with. Michael and I would have never lasted.
Speaking of Michael . . .
He approached me, clapping, with an amused smile on his face. “Great job.” He applauded.
“Don’t be jealous.” I snapped. “You’re not supposed to be watching us practice anyway.” I stated truthfully. Our coach liked to keep things private until the games.
“Oh, so lover boy over here can watch but I can’t?” He scoffed and pretended to be offended. “Golly!”
“Shut up, Michael.” I practically growled through clenched teeth. “Have you forgotten to quickly what Johnny is?”
“Of course not, and I could use that against him, easy as pie.”
“And killing you would be easy as pie.” Johnny threw in suddenly, catching Michael off guard and he quit smiling his annoying smile; the smile of victory.; the smile of getting under our skin just for the heck of it. He disliked me because he was jealous. I thought Michael and I were friends, and we were for a few months, but then everything changed. People started making fun of him because I left him for Johnny who was much more attractive than Michael the human. Michael got mad at me and his sudden change of attitude towards me really pissed me off. It isn’t my fault destiny put me with Johnny who was much less a jerk than Michael ever was.
“Fine.” Michael concluded, stuffing his hands in his jacket pockets. “Have it your way.” The satisfaction of our anger quickly faded and he scowled, turning and walking away from us.
Then Johnny changed the subject completely. “Kieryn has a surprise for all of us. She didn’t tell me or even Selina yet, she said she wanted us to hurry to the apartment right after your practice.” He spoke urgently yet calmly, as if he just remembered Kieryn’s words, and was just as curious as I suddenly was.
“Alright, walk me home so I can drop off my stuff and tell my parents.” I said and we left the building after I called out my good-byes to whichever teammates still remained in the gym. Johnny walked me and trying to keep up with his speed caused me to become even more tired. He didn’t notice my struggle, probably because he didn’t really look at me and just focused on the ground in front of us, I assumed because he wanted to get to Kieryn ASAP. I didn’t blame him.
I barged into the front door of my house and saw mom watching TV in the living room, and my brother Anthony at the kitchen table hovering worriedly over a text book. I threw my stuff on the floor and ventured to the kitchen to pick up something quick to eat. Johnny wouldn’t have any good food at his apartment for me for obvious reasons. I pulled out a pop tart and asked Anthony what he was doing.
“Calculus screws me up.” he admitted. “I need to study.”
“You never study.” I pointed out.
He shot me a dirty look. “It’s not like that this time.”
I shrugged. “Whatever.”
Johnny was in the living room speaking to my mom about who knows what. When I entered it looked as if Mom knew all the details. Johnny was fast at explaining things.
“Be back by six honey, okay?”
“Sure.” I said gesturing for Johnny to follow me out the door. I slipped on flip flops instead of my sports shoes and headed out the door, tripping over my own flip flops on the way out. Hopefully I wouldn’t be chased today. Not a bad thing to consider when I recollect on my past.
Johnny laughed at my clumsiness and threw me on his back. In an instant we were practically flying through the air. I briefly wondered what we looked like to everyone around us. Could they even see us? Something to ask Johnny later in life.
When we stopped we were just in front of the door of Johnny’s apartment.
We entered slowly, and the first thing I got a glimpse of was Selina sitting on the rocking chair and Kieryn anxiously wobbling back and forth on the couch. She sprang out of her seat when she saw us and was in front of me in a second. She grabbed my hands and began jumping up and down, smiling ear to ear. She caught me off guard so all I could do was jump with her and smile.
Finally I asked, “What are we so excited about?”
“Yeah,” Selina butted in, getting up from her seat. Johnny gathered around too.
Kieryn took a deep breath in and out and looked around at the three friends that surrounded her. “I’m getting married!”

I like the fact that Michael, though her ex, seems to be quite a sympathetic character. In fact, I like him much more than Johnny or the protagonist.
