Video Games have advanced to a point where they have full virtual reality capabilities. The first game to use this system launches a massive promotion with one hell of a hook: Last person standing wins a cash prize of 100 million dollars. Twenty thousand lucky contestants are chosen for this launch, and the game begins.

Enter Oscar. Having the unfortunate fate of his character being released into the game late through an error, Oscar has to play catch up if he wants his chance at the prize. But in a game in which everyone’s goal appears to be the same, who can you trust to help you? Oscar will have to fight his way through corrupt alliances of players, thieves, murderers, and nut-jobs if he wants to win.

Of course, things aren’t always what they seem, and Oscar might want to keep his head down if he doesn’t want to accidentally get involved in some of the darker secrets of the game.

Chapter 24: True Power

Dylan watches the tower fall from her spot on top of the gate.

Dylan: Looks like there’s quite a fight going on. I’ll have to remember to check after everything’s calmed down to make sure the Spidersilks are all really dead.

Kester uses his arm to shield his eyes from the debris of the collapsed tower.

Kester: Damn, Sniper’s tower! Are things really going that bad for us?

Melanie: Looks like your little trap-town is collapsing around you. You won’t be luring anyone else here.

Kester laughs.

Kester: Like it matters. There are plenty of small towns all over this world that we can commandeer. And dead members are easily replaced. As long as the Spidersilks have me, they cannot fall!

Melanie: Think pretty highly of yourself, don’t you?

Kester: Of course I do! With god damn good reason! I am power! I carry this organization on my back! I am the heart of the Spidersilks!

His bandages flow from his body.

Kester: Allow me to show you!

Sniper sees Oscar running towards them in the distance.

Sniper: I don’t stand much of a chance at close range, particularly two-on-one. I need to make some distance.

Sarah: Uh, excuse me, who exactly are you talking to?

Sniper ignores this comment and jumps away from her, into the rubble.

Oscar runs up to Sarah.

Oscar: Good job Sarah! Did you kill him?

Sarah: No, he ran off into the rubble. We have to hurry.

Oscar: I’m on it!

He dashes into the rubble.

Sarah: Wait, you didn’t even see which way he…oh well, I’m sure he’ll figure it out…

She follows.

Iricryo and Melanie are dodging around, trying to avoid the bandages that fly near them. Iricryo ducks out of the way of one attack and slashes through a line of bandages. Melanie charges through the bandages, dagger raised, blazing with fire.

Melanie: BLAZING EAGLE!

A massive flaming eagle shoots out from the tip of her blade. It engulfs all of Kester’s bandages and then his body. The bandages across his body light on fire and eventually turn to ash, leaving behind nothing.

Melanie: Huh? Where’d he –

Her legs get caught in bandages that are strewn across the floor. Behind her bandages begin to pick up from the ground, forming the shape of a body that eventually takes form as Kester.

Kester: Die! Wounding Wrap!

His bandages glow red and slice through the area in a wrapping (spiral) motion at Melanie. Melanie is caught by it and flies hard across the ground, blood pouring from her body.

Iricryo: M-Melanie!

Kester: Hey, do you hear that? For the first time since you two got here, her annoying voice can’t be heard.

Iricryo looks over to where Melanie lies. She is motionless.

Iricryo: Shit…this isn’t good…

Oscar searches through the rubble for Sniper.

Oscar: Where’d that guy go? Come to think of it…what does he look like…well I guess if I find someone it has got to be him…

Sniper hides behind a fallen segment of wall. He piers his rifle over and aims it at Oscar.

Sniper: Got you in view.

As he is about to fire a blast of air washes over him. He is forced to jump out of the way to avoid an explosive airstream.

Sarah runs towards him.

Sarah: Oscar! You have to be more careful! Don’t stand out in plain sight like that!
Oscar: Huh?

He looks over at Sniper, who is dashing away.

Oscar: Is that the guy?

Sarah: Yes! Damnit he’s getting away!

They both chase after Sniper, dashing through rubble and until he jumps straight out and back into the town.  He looks behind him and sees them only a few steps behind, Oscar reaching out for him.

Sniper: This is getting annoying, I’ll never get a shot this way.

Sarah: Are you always talking to yourself like that?

Sniper: Guess I got to put more effort into it.

Oscar arm reaches out, almost grabbing Sniper’s shirt. Just as he does, Sniper makes a mad dash forward, leaving Oscar and Sarah behind in a trail of dust. He jumps upwards, and in a single leap clears the roof of a building and hops over.

Sarah: Huh…did you see that?

Oscar: Oh, no way is he getting away!

He dashes forward, leaving Sarah behind, eyes wide.

Sarah: Wow, Oscar’s really fast when he wants to be. I’m amazed he even has the energy to run now, that jewel shouldn’t make his energy regenerate that fast. Is he just so naturally energetic?

Sniper pants on the rooftop, setting his Sniper rifle into place.

Sniper: Using my Swift Flee ability is always so draining, I was hoping I wouldn’t have to resort to it. Fortunately, I should have plenty of time to pick them off before they catch up.

Oscar reaches the building and begins to rapidly claw his way up the building, digging his gloves into the wall and working his way up.

As Sniper looks through his scope, Oscar’s body blocks the way of his view. Sniper can only look in shock as Oscar hit him hard across the face, sending him soaring backwards. Oscar pants hard.

Sniper: How – how the hell did you catch up to me so fast!?

Oscar: By running, duh.

Sniper: I see…guess I underestimated you…I’ll have to make sure the gap between us is far greater this time.

Oscar: Oh, no, you’re not getting away!

He makes a grab at Sniper, who pulls a dagger out from underneath his sleeve and flings it at Oscar. Oscar is cut across the side of his shoulder and moves back a few steps. Sniper grabs his rifle and jumps from the building, landing calmly below.

Sniper: Time to Swift Flee… sigh…

He runs off at an incredible speed away.

Oscar: Get back here!

He leaps off the building, landing hard and dashing madly forward.

Iricryo is desperately trying to avoid the bandages that are slicing past him. He blocks and cuts a few strings with his rapier, but he looks around and can’t see any way out.

Iricryo: I’m being boxed into a corner here, I can’t think of any way out and this guy seems untouchable! What am I supposed to do?

He determinedly holds his rapier in front of him.

Iricryo: Just a straight dash forward, I’ve got to be able to get close enough to him…and if I hit him hard enough I might be able to break through! It’s my only shot!

He dashes forward, cutting and slicing the bandages in his way. He cuts forward, nearly reaching his rapier to Kester, his rapier leaving a feint glow behind it from the speed it traveling. An inch in front of Kester’s face, Iricryo’s rapier stops, and Iricryo’s face turns to surprise as one of Kester’s bandages shoots straight through the right side of Iricryo’s chest, near his shoulder, coming out his back. He is lifted off his feet and swung hard to the ground.

Kester: Not a bad attempt, I’ll give you credit, you’re one of the stronger people we’ve trapped here. Your death will yield a great amount of experience. Know you don’t die in vain, I’m sure with the levels I’ll be getting from killing the two of you I will finally be able to become the leader of the Spidersilks!

His bandages try to engulf Iricryo, but Iricryo rolls away at the last second. He gets up on one knee, clutching his rapier in one hand and his wound with the other.

Kester: Why are you resisting!? Don’t you understand that you’ve already lost!? It’s the lack of respect, isn’t it? Yes, that’s it. You just have absolutely no respect for how powerful I am.

He walks slowly towards Iricryo, Iricryo gets back on both feet and backs slowly away from him.

Kester: You’ve never seen someone as strong as me, so it’s okay, I understand. How can you respect the amount of work, dedication, hours upon hours of training, mastering and combining and then remastering moves, all until it comes together perfectly. The amount of sleepless nights you are forced to endure because you are so driven to become the best. You have no idea.

Kester waves his hand in the air, and his bandages surround Iricryo from all sides.

Kester: I hold no grudge that you continue to resist to the very last second, wasting every moment of my time that your strength can allow you. You have never witnessed true power before, so I cannot be mad at you.

Iricryo holds his rapier ready, his eyes constantly glancing back and forth at the bandages surrounding him.

Kester: You will understand now, though. I’ll show you, in your last few moments in this game, what true power is. Wounding Wrap!

He bandages glow and in a wrapping pattern go to slice through Iricryo. A sword cuts through the air, slicing away most of the bandages, and Rook’s figure looms over Iricryo, easily blocking the remaining bandages with the broad end of his sword.

Kester: Huh? Where the hell – who the hell are you?

Rook: Someone who just heard you speech. If you think you are able…

He holds his sword in a battle ready position.

Rook: How about you try to show me what true power is?
