FADE IN:

INT. A HOUSE-DAY

There are two girls playing Mario Kart on the Wii.

They are sisters.

They are ALIYAH and JANE.

ALIYAH is about 12.

JANE is about 10.

ALIYAH

(Shouting) I’m going to beat you!

JANE

(Shouting) No! You’re not! I’m going to beat YOU!!

ALIYAH

Na uh!

JANE

Uh-huh!

A woman walks into the room. She is Aliyah and Jane’s mother. She is TIKIKA JONES.

     TIKIKA

(Walking in) Can you guys get any louder?

TIKIKA turns the Wii off.

     JANE

Mom!

     ALIYAH

Hey! No fair.

TIKIKA

I think you’ve had enough video game time. Here.

TIKIKA tosses a dusty book to JANE and ALIYAH. It bounces off the couch and opens.

TIKIKA

Read this.

     ALIYAH/JANE

(Together) The Land of Mystique?

     TIKIKA

It’s my favorite book.

TIKIKA walks out of the room.

JANE

What do you think it is about?

     ALIYAH

Let’s read and find out.

ALIYAH looks over the book and turns a page.

     JANE

Look how worn out these pages are.

     ALIYAH

It must be from the B.C.

ALIYAH and JANE laugh.

     TIKIKA (O.S.)

Just read it already!

     JANE

Once upon a time… (She pauses)

ALIYAH

It’s a fable. You know what… let’s read this outside. I need some fresh air and actual lighting.

     JANE

Fresh air sounds good right now.

     ALIYAH

Mom, we’re going outside.

     TIKIKA (O.S.)

Have fun.

JANE grabs her backpack.

     ALIYAH

Why are you bringing your backpack?

     JANE

Just in case if we decide to stop reading. I can go on an adventure.

ALIYAH and JANE walk outside and go sit under the shade of a tree.

JANE reopens the book.

     JANE

(Reading from the book)Once upon a time… there was a land called the Land of Mystery.

     ALIYAH

Mystique. Give me that! (Taking the book from JANE. Reading from the book) The Land of Mystique was no ordinary land. It had pixies, fairies, wood nymphs and more! The Land of Mystique had

a secret entrance on Earth, but it required a secret chant to enter. The-.

JANE

(Interrupts ALIYAH by pointing to a picture) Does that look familiar to you?

     ALIYAH

You’re just imagining things.

JANE takes the book from ALIYAH and runs. ALIYAH stands up and runs after JANE.

     ALIYAH

Jane, come back here! Jane!

JANE stops in front of a place that looks like the picture.

[DESIGNER NOTE: The place has droopy trees that are blocking a cave with rocks.]

ALIYAH catches up to JANE and stares at amazement.

     ALIYAH

Whoa!

JANE looks at the book and reads.

     JANE

(Reading from the book) The chant went like this “ Tonga ra outcha me oboun de ro”

     ALIYAH

We’re not in a fairy tale! It won’t work. Come on, let’s go back home.

JANE

No wait.

     ALIYAH

You are crazy!

The droopy trees pull away then the rock moves revealing an open space.

     JANE

I’m not crazy.

JANE hands ALIYAH the book and goes into the opening. She disappears.

     JANE (O.S.)

Careful when you come in. There’s millions of branches.

     ALIYAH

Is it dark in there?

     JANE

Not at all.

The rock starts closing but ALIYAH sneaks in before it closes and falls down the slope. She falls in front of JANE.

     ALIYAH

Great. (Weakly getting up) Now we’re trapped.

JANE helps ALIYAH up.

     JANE

At least it’s not dark with bats.

ALIYAH picks up the book then looks around in amazement.

This is actually nice!

     JANE

Want to explore?

     ALIYAH

I know if I say no you’re still going to go.

     JANE

(Smiling and nodding) Yes I am.

     ALIYAH

Did you bring your notebook?

     JANE

Yeah. It’s in my backpack. Why?

     ALIYAH

So, we can write or draw the easily noticeable stuff that we pass and be able to g-.

     JANE

(Interrupts ALIYAH) I understand what you’re saying. Smart. That’s what makes you the smart one.

ALIYAH opens JANE’S backpack and pulls out a notebook and places the book in it.

     ALIYAH

I put the Land of Mystique book in your bag.

     JANE

Cool. Let’s go.

ALIYAH

Going to sketch that giant purple mushroom.

ALIYAH does a quick sketch of the mushroom and tucks the notebook under her arm.

     JANE

I wonder if pixies and stuff live here. Like in the book.

     ALIYAH

Jane, pixies don’t exist.

A pixie is flying by ALIYAH’S ear.

The pixie is CAREY.

     CAREY

I believe I do exist.

CARREY lands on ALIYAH’S shoulder.

     CARREY

What is your species non-believer?

     ALIYAH

(In amazement) Me and my sister are humans.

     CARREY

A human?

     JANE

Or a Homo-Sapien.

     CARREY

I’ve only heard of Homo-Sapiens before but I never seen one.

     JANE

What’s your name? My sister is sorry for not saying you exist.

My name is Carrey. Not that it matters!

CARREY sits down on ALIYAH’S shoulder and pushes hair away from her face.

     CARREY

What are your names?

     ALIYAH

I’m Aliyah and that’s-

     JANE

(Interrupts ALIYAH) Jane. I’m Jane. (Picking CARREY up) I’m just wondering but what do you call this place?

     CARREY

The Land of Mystique! Of course, silly!

     JANE

Okay that’s what I thought.
