I saw Death today

Short Story By: boneman
Fantasy

A very short story about a car ride with Death in the passanger seat.....

I think its vaguely funny in a dark humour kind of way....

Before anyone jumps on it, it isnt an anti smoking message. Mind you he is right they will kill you eventually.

I saw Death today

I saw death today he was in my peripheral vision smoking a cigarette and asking for directions.
I pulled over and offered him a ride to wherever he was going; he accepted and sat beside me

We discussed the news of the day and general small talk about the weather being so cold. He said it kept him busy.

He said that he did not mind his job too much, better than sitting at a desk waiting for him he said

Then it occurred to me, who does death wait for? Does he wait for his Reaper or for everyone to be dead?

Death offered me a cigarette with a wheezing laugh saying “These things will kill ya boy”

I took the cigarette and smoked it anyway one hand resting on the wheel “well you got to die of something” I laughed.

I asked Death where he was going “Nowhere really he said just wanted to remind you I was here”

Pulling over the side of the road I lent across and opened the door “This is where you get off my friend”

Death laughed again like the sound of a rusty gate “That it is boy, this is my stop right enough”

Death stood in the lay by rooting in his cowl for his cardboard sign

I drove off and left him there standing by the side of the road with a cardboard sign marked “Anywhere”
I think he is still there waiting for his next ride.

This is good read. I had to take a second read of "We discussed the news of the day and general small talk about the weather being so cold. He said it kept him busy." I almost missed it. Great job.

Thank you for your kind comment.

I see Death creeping into a lot of what I write. It was nice for a change to give him a dark humour (kinda) sort of an edge.

Really liked it Boneman - a poetic story in my way of thinking. Yah! Glad I don't smoke but death hovers around honing in on lots of other things we do (or things beyond our control) I loved the way you tackled this, gave a dark subject a light hearted edge.

Thank you Anna, for your kind comments.

I feel to face Death you can do one of two things, 1:- Just give in and accept it without any fuss or raging or 2:- Face it full on and say "HAH !!!! You don't frighten me matey what else you got?"

Guess which one I chose?

I didnt set out to write a danger of smoking piece it just wrote itself I guess.

Yup sooner or later Death comes for all of us, so in that case face it and laugh at it......

No point being miserable about it.....

Boneman, it was really good. I had to read it twice to 'get' it. Death is really right there, whether we want him there or not. Interesting that he was smoking. I quit smoking almost 8 years ago: Best thing I did for myself and for the people around me.
