The sound of footsteps echoing up the stairs terrified the teenager. She crawled deeper under her bed, pressing her tiny body against the wall. The footsteps became louder.

Thump, thump, thump.

They sounded like the beating of her heart in her chest.

Thump, thump, thump.

The pounding in her ears and the pounding in her chest had become one in the same.

Thump, thump…

They stopped. She bit her tongue, struggling with all her might not to scream and reveal her location. The footsteps trailed through her hallway.

Thump, thump, thump.

She heard a loud crash as one of the doors was kicked in.

Thump, thump, thump.

She heard a loud grunt and then an even bigger clamor as the man overturned her mother's bed. The girl began to cry, and the tears would not stop. She heard the footsteps coming down the hall towards her room.

Thump, thump, thump.

She saw the shadow of the man in her doorway. Her breathing ,as quiet as she could make it, seemed to bounce all across the room.

Thump.

One step towards her.

Thump.

Then another.

Thump.

She screamed as the bed was pulled away from over her head. She looked up, startled by what she saw. Staring back at her was nothing more than a kangaroo. She gave him a puzzled look.

"I'm the Aussie Psycho, mate, pleasure to meet ya!"

The kangaroo gave a swift kick, which crunched in the girl's skull in. Then he bounded out of the house, never to be seen again.
