8/1/05 'HELICOPTER'

THIS IS OTIS AGAIN----I WENT TO BED LAST NITE AT MY USUAL TIME-10/30 P.M.--I AM A POOR SLEEPER SO AS USUAL I DID NOT EXPECT A GOOD NITES SLEEP--GOOD SLEEP FOR ME ENDED DECADES AGO-

SUDDENLY I WAS IN A 4 PLACE HELICOPTER - 1500 FEET ALTITUDE--GAS TURBINE POWERED - AND I WAS THE PILOT -THE ONLY PERSON ABOARD--I WAS 'NOT' A HELICOPTER PILOT--I KNEW THE CONTROL SYSTEM FROM BOOKS I HAVE READ--THIS MACHINE WAS MORE STABLE THAN MOST HELICOPTERS--I HAD NO CHOICE--GRAB THE ROTOR BLADES PITCH CONTROL--GRAB THE CONTROL STICK--MY FEET ON THE RUDDER PEDALS--BE SURE THE TURBINE POWER WAS OK--IT WAS AT 85 % POWER--CHECK THE FUEL GAUGE--AND TRY TO HOLD THIS MACHINE AT A STEADY ALTITUDE AND A STEADY ATITUDE--

FOR A WHILE I WAS UP AND DOWN AND LEANING LEFT AND RIGHT--SOON HOWEVER I GOT THE HANG OF IT AND NOW IT WAS FUN--

I SEEMED TO BE JUST WEST OF BEAUMONT, TEXAS HEADING WEST OVER HIGHWAY I-10 --SUDDENLY I SAW A CAR BELOW LEAVE THE FREEWAY AND FLIP OVER--I HAD TO TRY TO LAND AND HELP--I WAS ABLE TO SET THE MACHINE DOWN ON THE HIGHWAY--TRAFFIC STOPPED TO LET ME LAND--THE MAN IN THE WRECKED CAR WAS A FELLOW I WORKED WITH FOR MANY YEARS--HE FOR SURE HAD A BROKEN ARM AND POSSIBLY BROKEN RIBS-HE WAS IN PAIN--I FOUND THE EMERGENCY KIT IN THE HELICOPTER AND GAVE HIM A PAIN KILLER PILL--

I MANAGED TO GET HIM INTO THE HELICOPTER AND TOOK OFF AND HEADED FOR A BEAUMONT HOSPITAL--AND LANDED ON TOP OF THE HOSPITAL -ON THE HELICOPTER LANDING PAD--THE STAFF NURSES IMMEDIATELY REMOVED MY FELLOW WORKER AND IMMEDIATELY LOADED ANOTHER SICK FELLOW INTO MY HELICOPTER--I TOLD THE NURSES I WAS NOT A HELICOPTER PILOT--AND HAD NO LICENSE TO FLY ONE--THEY IGNORED THIS AND SAID GET THIS MAN TO THE METHODIST HOSPITAL IN HOUSTON, TEXAS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE--

WITH NO CHOICE --I TOOK OFF AND HEADED WEST--MANY SWITCHES AND DIALS ON THE DASH THAT I HAD NO IDEA OF THEIR PURPOSE--BUT I EASILY COULD RECOGNIZE THE FUEL GAUGE--IT WAS READING NEAR EMPTY--I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO LAND AT THE AIRPORT WEST OF BEAUMONT--THE SAME AIRPORT WHERE I PASSED MY FLIGHT TEST FOR A PRIVATE PILOT LICENSE IN 1946 - FOR SINGLE ENGINE LIGHT AIRCRAFT--

AFTER REFUELING --I TOOK OFF AND HEADED FOR HOUSTON--LANDED ATOP THE METHODIST HOSPITAL--AGAIN THE STAFF THERE REMOVED THE MAN AND QUICKLY LOADED ANOTHER INJURED MAN INTO THE HELICOPTER--AGAIN I TRIED TO EXPLAIN THAT I WAS NOT A LICENSED HELICOPTER PILOT--NO USE-THEY PAID NO ATTENTION TO ME--THEY TOLD ME TO BRING THIS MAN TO BEAUMONT, TEXAS - ST. ELIZABETH HOSPITAL--I WAS CONFIDENT NOW THAT I COULD DO IT--UP AND OFF TO THE EAST HEADING FOR BEAUMONT--LANDED ATOP THE HOSPITAL AND AGAIN A STAFF OF FOLKS REMOVED THE MAN--THIS TIME NO ONE ELSE WAS PUT ABOARD THE HELICOPTER--WHAT A RELIEF--

I TOOK OFF AND HEADED EAST FOR LAKE CHARLES, LA REGIONAL AIRPORT--MY HOME TOWN--IN 30 MINUTES I WAS ATTEMPTING TO LAND--I MISJUDGED AND THE MAIN ROTORS HIT A STEEL POLE --PIECES FLYING EVERY WHERE--THE HELICOPTER SMASHED INTO THE CONCRETE LANDING AREA--

SUDDENLY I WOKE UP--IT WAS ALL A DREAM-

I WAS HAPPY--BUT I SURE HAD FUN FLYING THAT BEAUTIFUL - WONDERFUL HELICOPTER--
