Memorial Day in Atlantis

Short story By: R A B Bradbury

I wrote this for a non-Booksie related competition, to win a prize in a game I play online. The requirements were to write about a memorial day celebration within the world the game is set in. I know it is short, they asked for under 500 words.
Let me know what you think :D

Dragons of Atlantis Memorial Day.

Once a year, all across the beautiful realms of Atlantis a global ceasefire is called. The ceasefire will only last one day, but during that time amazing things can be seen. Age old alliances lay down their arms, and open their gates to their neighbours.

War is forgotten as soldiers and commanders take time to remember their fallen comrades. Parades march through each city, meeting in the wildernesses and marching on in memory of the dead. The walls of each city they pass decked out in red, white and blue, adding unusual amounts of colour to the plains and hills of green.

The Gods grant every mausoleum fresh souls to revive, the best of the dead from each city, eagerly waiting to rejoin the fray. This will only happen on this very special day.

At the end of the great parade, once every cities troops have marched and honoured those they have lost, there is a great feast. This feast helps everyone to forget about vast food shortages in their city, as every city contributed to the feast.

It is unusual for the people of Atlantis to come together regardless of race or alliance and enjoy such festivities, and the enjoyment is evident. There is food and drink in abundance, this enormous feast of the realm enjoyed by all.

Alliances that have been locked in age long wars come together and pay respect to the losses of the other. Troops that they themselves have watched die as they marched, determined upon their own cities.

Tributes of flowers and cornucopias of food are laid around the gates of each city, a final gift to this year's dead. Dragons soar up above, flying in formation with dragons they are usually locked in battle with.

Today no one will fight, peace will reign over Atlantis, as everyone mourns those who selflessly gave their lives for the kingdom they served.

Other war torn worlds could learn from the Atlantians. On this one day, regardless of race or religion, the realms come together to respect the many lives lost throughout the course of the war filled year.

Tomorrow things will be different; no more drinks will be shared, no more food handed around. Atlantis will fall back to war.
