Song of the Jewels
By Georgia Jefferson
The sun was starting to set when Alisa and Ren arrived at the large steel gates of their new school. “I am so glad you have made it to our school,” said a lady in a black suit. “Did you enjoy your flight?”
“I just wanted to thank you for giving us the scholarships, and yes the flight was wonderful,” said Alisa beaming at the lady. Their flight actually had been quite pleasant and somehow they had managed to score first class tickets as well!
“Yes, Thank you,” Ren said quickly.
“So you two must be Renagary and Alisa,” said the lady, “My name is Ms. Drangly.”
“Yep that’s us Miss! Although I would rather be called Ren thanks,” replied Ren with a bit of blush.
“Well I’m sure you two must be exhausted from your flight and probably want a warm bath and a nice comfortable bed, so I will escort you to your room. Right this way.”
The two girls followed Ms. Drangly obediently. “You girls will be sharing a room, all rooms have two to three people in them,” she told them as they walked.
Finally they arrived at the door to their room. To start off the building itself looked a mansion. Then their room turned out to be two floors from the top. “Here are the keys to your room,” said Ms. Drangly, handing each of the girls a key. “If you ever need spares just come and see me I work at the front desk on the ground floor.” And with that she headed back to the grand elevator.
“Do you want to open the door?” Ren asked Alisa once Ms. Drangly had left. Alisa could see how much she wanted to do it so she said, “No you go ahead.”
“You sure?”
Alisa nodded. With that Ren inserted the key into the lock and turned it. It seemed to take for ever but it was probably only a few seconds. Ren opened the door a crack and peeked through almost instantly she gasped and took a step back wide eyed. “What’s the matter?” asked Alisa with a frown. Ren only shook her head and opened the door wide so Alisa could see. Alisa almost passed out. It was like the luxury suite of a five star hotel. It over looked a large lake, and had a kitchen where every thing was stainless steel other than the bench top which were marble, a lounge room with yellow lounges softer than they looked, light orange cushions, a wide screen TV so big it probably was not even in stores yet, and dark red drapes framing the huge old fashion windows with the seats built into them, so you could stare across the lake while sitting in comfort, then there was the dining room this had one of those huge wooden tables you see on movies except not quite as long, and the cutlery was very elegant each piece seemed to be hand made, next was the bed room which had more old fashioned windows that over looked the dark blue crystal waters of the lake, both beds were king sized with red covers and drapes, and last but not least, the bath room, this was the only room that had a door way. The rest of their apartment was all open, but the bathroom had a door and neither of them had yet been in to examined it. “It’s like the dream house, I never dreamed I’d have in an apartment,” said Ren in delight, she was almost in tears from happiness.
“I’d heard this school had a lot of money to throw around but I never expected this,” said Alisa in a small voice.
“You let me open the door so you can have the first bath,” said Ren.
“Aaaawwww thanks.”
“Wait aren’t you going to ask me whether I’m sure or not?”
“Nope!” she answered making a dash for the door, she got there just in time to lock the door. She stood there in silence for a while then turned and all of a sudden her voice was stuck in her throat.
“Alisa you okay in there?” Finally her voice started working again.
“The bathroom is marble too and they have every kind of scented soap you can imagine, and the shampoo and conditioner is the most expensive on the market! It must cost a million dollars a month to go to school here!” she gasped.
“How did we get roped into showing them new kids around the school?” whined Nick. He and his friend had been nominated to show the two new kids around, he thought that members of the top football team should get something better than waking up at 7 and show some dorky new kids around. “Stop complaining,” said Shannon. Nick just groaned in reply.
With that Shannon knocked on the door. The boys heard a little moan come from the room then footsteps heading their way. Then a sleepy head peered round the door and said, “If we’ve missed class we don’t actually have a clock and we only got here yesterday and where we come from they don’t have classes on Sunday and and- Shannon’s laugh silenced her.
“Don’t worry there is no class today. My friend and I were chosen to show you girls around.”
“Oh,” she said with a relieved sigh. “Uummmm… have you guys had breakfast?”
“No,” groaned Nick.
“Do you want to come in and have breakfast with us after we are dressed? Then you can take us on this tour.”
“Breakfast?! Deal!”
By the time they had finished showing Alisa and Ren (whose names they had discovered over breakfast) around they were all soaking wet because half way through it had started to rain. “How about we take you girls back now so you can dry off,” suggested Shannon.
They all agreed and soon they were back at Alisa and Ren’s door.
Alisa sat in the window looking across the now grey lake, then suddenly she felt a sudden urge to go for a walk along the lakeside. She finished her tea and then yelled, “I’m going for a walk,” over the blare of the TV. “Yep,” Ren replied absently. Alisa didn’t even think she heard but kept that thought to herself anyway.
She had been walking for a while now with the lake to her left and was about half way up along the lake shore. On a clear day she would probably appear as a speck if anyone were to look out their window but today they wouldn’t see her even if they were looking. Then a strange voice came out of the mist that had formed, “Alisa you do not know me, but I have known you your whole life. This has always been your destiny. Walk towards me and I will be able to tell you more.”
“Where are you I can’t see you.”
“Follow my voice.” something powerful inside of Alisa was pulling her left. She took off her shoes and started walking in that direction, she hardly notice how every time she took a step something cool and gentle touched the bottom of her feet. After a while Alisa was completely lost. “Am I close?” she cried out into the mist. “Yes in fact I am right beside you, but you will not see me,” replied the voice. “I will now tell you all you need to know. You are one of six girls to have this task. Although this school seems perfect it is not. It is the gateway to another world. Sometimes monsters escape (these monsters are also known as Varnoe) into our world and you and the other five girls will have to fight these monsters and guard the school. Your power will come from water, this means you have the most power, you see without water none of the other elements exist. With out water there would be no plants and that means no earth, without out plants, no dead wood or branches and that means no fire, and without water there would be no air because air is partly water. The other two powers other than your own are technology and telepathy.”
“So there are five other girls just like me with the powers of, earth, fire, air telepathy and technology.”
“You are correct.”
Shannon was looking at the floor thoughtfully. That Alisa girl seems mysterious, playful and nice all at the same time, in time we may become friends. I wonder if she will be in my class. “Earth to Shannon!” Nick yelled in his ear.
“Ow! What is it?” you don’t have to shout in my ear you know.”
“Well I only called you about a hundred times.”
“Whatever. What did you want?”
“I just noticed that your girlfriend’s necklace is in the corner there,” Nick said playfully. “What?”
“You know, Alisa.”
“Why would you say she’s my girlfriend? I only just met her stop being so silly!” he replied with a blush.
“Well there was the fact that you were staring at her most of the tour, lucky for you she didn’t notice, and second of all you just blushed,” Nick said smugly.
“Whatever we might as well take it back to her.”
“What a lovely deed.”
“You should stop that before I stop you myself.”
“Young love at its best,” said Nick with pretend sincerity.
“How many times do I have to say stop it?”
“Okay but I how long can you hide the truth?”
“You’re never going to let this go are you?”
“No. Besides I have too much fun annoying you. I know deep down inside you enjoy being teased by me.” This conversation is going to go on forever if I don’t let it go, thought Shannon. By now they had reached the right floor.
“Come in, the door is not locked,” came the answer when they knocked on the door. As they moved into the room Shannon asked, “Is Alisa here?”
“No sorry she went for a walk.”
“In the rain?”
“Yes, actually I was watching TV so I didn’t think about it but now it does seem rather strange. She has been gone a while, I think I’m going to have to go look for her. Why do you want her?”
“We just found her necklace. Do want us to help you search for her?”
“You sure you wouldn’t mind it will be very cold and wet.”
“Don’t worry about it we are always happy to help.” Although this earned him a glare from Nick he still felt it was the right thing to do. Once they were out side in the courtyard they agreed to split up. Ren would search the school area, Nick would search the lake shore and forest on the right side of the lake and Shannon would do the left side of the lake and the woods on that side.
“What if I don’t want any of this?” Alisa asked rebelliously.
“You don’t get a choice. You either accept it and help the school or you be selfish and get on with your own life while innocent people get hurt because you chose not to use your gift to save them. The choice is yours. Our time is running short but before I go I will break the lock on your power for it is now needed. If you have any question ask the head master she knows everything although a few things she is forbidden to tell you. Enough of that though I must leave very soon. Are you ready?” Alisa took a deep breath then said, “Do what you must.” Out of the mist came a pale hand that reached out and touch her forehead with cool fingers. The coolness spread through her body, it was then that she noticed the blue ribbon outlined with black with the same coloured symbols running through the middle that encircled her body. It was like a chain that bound a slave and if they every tried to escape it would squeeze them until they popped, what had she gotten herself into. “Do not fear it is only the bonds that sealed away your power.” She just stared at the ribbons, then she realized she could not feel that cool calm touch in her feet and looked down. She was floating in mid-air, there was only one thing she could. So she held out her arms and let the strange feeling surge through her body.
I can’t believe we came away from our warm, dry room to look for some girl! I never thought Shannon would actually prove me right. I mean when ever I’m teasing him it’s never normally true! Like when I said that he liked the girl Shannon because there names were the same. This day has to be the worst ever, thought glumily.
Ren sat on a bench looking at a water fountain miserably. I really hope we find Alisa she is my best friend and I’d hate for anything to happen to her. What kind of a friend am I to let her or anyone go for a walk in this weather. Enough of the regrets I’ve got to stop wasting time and try to find her. Although it would help if I knew this school better. It’s almost time for meet to meet up with the others I better keep looking.
What’s that?! Is it a dead body? Shannon thought when he saw a blur against the shore close by. He started to run towards it. When he arrived at the point where he thought he saw it he couldn’t actually see anything. He was about to give up when he tripped over something soft. He looked back at what he had tripped on. What he saw horrified him. It was Alisa lying on her back saturated, with the water lapping at her side. That was who that floating girl reminded him of, it was Alisa but she wasn’t wearing that weird dress at the moment she was wearing the tight black jumper and the skinny leg jeans (which were now in fashion) he had seen her in this morning. She wasn’t de- dead was she? He put his head to her chest. No, her heart was beating and she was breathing but only faintly. Should he give her mouth to mouth? No that would embarrass them both. Although it’s tempting, he thought gazing at her delicate lips. Finally he decided to do the pushing-on-the-chest thing. After he had do this about three times she started to cough up water, and then she was breathing fine although not yet conscious. He picked her up and started walking back to the dormitory building.
“Where was she?” asked Ren panicking.
“Lying on the lake shore,” Shannon replied calmly.
“Oh well that’s something you see every day!” Ren yelled sarcastically.
“Why are you yelling at me as if it’s my fault?”
“Why are you so calm? If giant purple lamas were going to take over the world you would look like it was the most normal thing in the entire universe!”
“Where did you get giant purple lamas from?”
“That’s not the point!”
“Why are we talking about lamas?” asked a sleepy voice.
“Don’t worry. How do you feel?”
“Fine. Why are you so upset Ren? And why am I so wet?”
“It seems you went for a swim without your knowing.”
“All I remember is…..” her voice trailed off as she remembered her warning.
Do not tell anyone of your powers or of our meeting. Some people will try to take advantage of your powers. You are a Delarny which means your essence is held within a gem that is somewhere on your body. This stone is a dead give away of a Delarny, but it does not appear until they recognize their power yours with be blue and it will be on your forehead unfortunately. It represents your element. I will give you a special ribbon in the morning to cover it with. I’m afraid out time is up.
“All you remember is?”
“I don’t actually remember much after leaving the building,” she lied.
Alisa woke up before dawn. She quietly tip-toed out of her room without waking Ren, then headed for the bathroom. Once she was in there she locked the door and looked in the mirror. There just like the voice had said was a glittering blue gem, witched looked very much like a large man made sapphire. “How am I meant to hide that?” she exclaimed in a whisper. Then true to what the voice had said a ribbon was lying on the bathroom sink. It had the same pattern as the ribbon that encircled her body the night before and was quite long. She tried tying it in a bow like a normal ribbon but the ends were too long and it looked silly. She struggled with it for about an hour when a sleepy voice drifted through the door, “Alisa is that you in there?”
“Yep I’ll be out in just a minute.” Then an idea came into her head, if it won’t tie like a ribbon then tie it like a headband. So she it over her jewel and then let it go to think about how to do the rest. Instead of falling against her back loosely it twined itself around her hair except it didn’t quite touch her hair……. It floated around it?
When they first entered the class room Alisa was really nervous. It was scary being the new kid, but at least she was doing it with her best friend. She looked over to Ren with a smile. They found two empty seats side by side and sat down. Once the class had assembled the teacher started to call out the roll. “Is there anyone I have missed?” she asked. Alisa and Ren raised their hands. “Oh you two must be the new girls that were coming this year. Will you please tell me a bit about yourselves? You can start with your names and where you are from.”
“Okay, well I’m Alisa and my friend and I are from Australia. My favourite colour is dark blue and I think that is it.”
“I my name is Renagary, but every one calls me Ren. I like the colour white and like Alisa said I’m from Australia.”
“Well that’s very nice girls. Oh by the way Ren, white is a shade not a colour. Be sure not to forget that. Uuummm…… Lannie and Shanon can you two please look after Ren and Alisa?”
“Yes Miss,” said a girl with long brown hair and green mischievous eyes. Then another girl with long silvery hair nodded calmly.
“I’m Shanon and my friend is Lannie,” said the one with long brown hair. Alisa merely nodded feeling a little shy. “It’s okay I won’t bite,” said Shanon with a giggle.
“Do you want to sit with us and two girls from the other class?” asked Lannie speaking for the first time.
“Uh, okay,” said Ren. Alisa and Ren were introduced to a bubbly girl with light brown hair and dancing brown eyes, her name was Elle and the other girls name was Miana, although Miana preferred Meana, her hair was strangely light blue and her eyes were grey.
As they walked back to their dormitory the girls found themselves with four new friends. After they had a stunning dinner Alisa asked, “Do you mind if have the first shower?”
“Sure as long as you don’t take too long.”
“Thanks.” With that Alisa made for the bathroom. After her shower she looked in the mirror. “Suppose it’s not that bad. I actually quite like it. It’s my favourite colour and it’s easy enough to hide. Having this….. What ever it is could be kind of cool. But one thing I have got to do is go back to where all this started and try to find out why it happened and why me. It will be best if I do it on the weekend.”
The week was over before Alisa knew it. She walked in silence along the quiet calm shores of the lake. The water was its usual aqua colour and not the dark crystal blue of the stone that was on her head like before. She stared at the shallow water that lapped the shore as she walked. She was unsure of what she was going to do about this, and how was this going to affect her life, it was all so confusing. The strangest thing was that there was no trace of what had happened just over a week ago. Also she had not noticed any monsters or Varnoe as the voice had called them. But she couldn’t have just dreamed it. The stone on her forehead was proof of that.
There was definitely something strange about that Alisa girl, but Nick could not quite pick it, but if she was going to interfere in his plans he could deal with her. She was no big threat.
Today was nice, thought Shanon. She was in the deepest part of the forest, practising with her powers with Elle. She was a Delarny and she had the power over fire. She had found out that Elle had had the power of a Delarny as well. She had flower power, or in other words the power over earth and all things growing. After she had discovered her secret she confessed to Elle that she knew it and in return told her that she was a Delarny too. After that moment they had become really close friends. She had discovered that when Elle had first discovered her power she too had heard that strange voice except her experience had been when she was lost in the forest when she first came to the school. That was another coincidence they had both found their powers shortly after they had come to the school. She had a feeling that they were not the only Delarny, but she had sworn to Elle that she would tell no one of her power and Elle had in return had promised to keep her secret. Her core stone (she had found out the name of the curious stone on her body in a dream and had told Elle what it was called also) was very close to the top of her arm and it was red. Elle’s was at the top of her back directly in between her shoulder blades and was a deep emerald green. Their core stones were easy to hide but they had to be showing for their powers to work. It was easier if they just transformed because their outfits made sure their core stones were visible.
“Something really seems to be troubling Alisa. It must be really bad because she won’t even talk to me about it,” Ren said to herself. She had gone for a walk to try to sort out her thoughts. The sun was setting painting the sky a pale pink. Then there was a rustling in the bushes. Ren tensed and stared at the large bush that shivered and sent shivers of leaves spiralling to the ground. “Wh-who’s there?” stammered Ren, she tried to sound brave, but failed. A strange creature leaped out of the bushes missing Ren’s head by an inch. Ren leaped away with a squeal. Then she studied the creature for a moment. It was about the size of a lion and could very well be a mutant lion, had matted green fur, red eyes (all Varnoe have red eyes, but Ren is not to learn that for a while), four legs with monkey like paws, dog ears, sharp teeth that were bared in a snarl with a bit of stringy saliva hanging down. “Hold out your arms in front of you and let the power flow through them,” instructed a voice from somewhere. Ren was so scared that she didn’t even question the voice or try to find the source of the sound and instead followed the advice obediently. She held her arms out at the thing and felt a tingly sensation build up in her hands then a white bolt of power was shot at the thing. She wasn’t used to her power so she missed. It voiced a deep growl then spat something at her. She dodged and then saw the place on the tree where the spit had hit was dissolving. Acid spit? She thought in disgust. Then she thought about what it would do to her skin and screamed.
Alisa started running towards the sound of the scream. She hoped that scream hadn’t come from the same person that she thought it had. When she arrived at the place the sound had come from she found that she had been correct. It was Ren. Then Alisa saw what she had been screaming at and almost screamed herself. But the strangest thing was what Ren was wearing. She was obviously not aware of her outfit change. She was wearing leather a mini skirt and a leather top. But her belly button was showing…. Did she have a belly button ring? It was like a white a white jewel. Then she saw a bolt of white light come from Ren’s hands and hit the Varnoe, with that it turned to ash. Ren was a Delarny. Alisa pressed herself to the back of a tree out of sight as she heard a strange male voice.
“You made short work of my pet. Let’s see if I can’t do the same to you,’ snarled a vicious male voice.
“Show your self,” Ren squeaked.
“You are one of the weakest of the elements, telepathy why should I appear for you. But I suppose if I get rid of you they will miss you and I will have to find and train a new pet. So you must pay!” he yelled and then appeared. He appeared to be a man in his twenties, he was tall and lanky, he had short black hair and yellow-green eyes. “I’m sorry I’m broke,” she said.
“I didn’t mean money, I meant your life,” he said with a laugh and then he shot at her. Ren dodged out of the way.
Alisa moved to a spot where she could see. Some crazy man just shot a red light at Ren. How dare he? She thought angrily. She was about to go out there and give him a piece of her mind when she saw that the red thing was not light. It was some kind of ball of red energy and the man seemed to be moving it with his mind. For a second everything seemed to be going in slow motion, and Alisa saw that Ren was not going to be able to avoid the next attack. “No!” yelled Ren and leapt in front of her friend. At that moment she realised what she had done, she and Ren were going to get fried. She held up her arms and braced herself for the heat that would eat away at her flesh and kill her. For some reason the blow never came. She looked up and saw the man staring at her.
It can’t be. She looks exactly like the first elemental warrior maiden. The most powerful Delarny that ever lived. No….. No the prophecy can’t be correct…. it was voiced by a crazy dying woman. This is interesting, let’s see if the prophecy is actually correct. With that he focus his concentration on casting up another red energy ball (he had lost his last one due to his surprise). Then he hurled it at the two cowering girls. Again the blonde one threw herself in front of her black haired friend. She threw her arms up again as if that would stop his attack. It was about to hit her arms when a globe of water formed around her, when his ball of power reached the water dome it disappeared. This is interesting she didn’t even have to have her core stone exposed. The boss will like to hear about this.
The man clapped his hands and was gone.
“What was that sound? It sounded close” said Elle.
“I’m not sure. Let’s go check it out,” replied Shanon.
When they got closer to where the noise was coming from they saw the source of it was the new girl Ren being sick. “I’m sorry,” she said to Alisa, “I just really don’t like fighting.”
“Don’t worry, at least we’re safe.”
Shanon gasped as she saw that both the girls had core stones. “You guys are Delarny too!” Shanon cried jumping out of their hiding place, Elle came out after her to see what she meant. Alisa’s head band had slipped revealing her core stone slightly. “What? No we’re not!” she cried in alarm.
“Yes you are. I can see both your core stones.”
“What? What is a core stone? And how do you know what a Delarny is?”
“Oh. You don’t know? Your core stone is the one way to identify a Delarny. It is the blue stone that is on your forehead, the white stone in Ren’s belly button, the green stone in the middle of Elle’s back and red stone in the top part of my right arm.”
“So you are Delarny too?”
“Yep that’s right,” said Shanon with a smile.
“Wait what is a Delarny?” asked Ren.
“We are Delarny. Delarny a maidens who fight using the powers of the elements. We are the Delarny. Isn’t it cool? We get like magic powers! I got fire power and Elle got the power over nature,” Shanon explained.
“My power is over water and from what that man said you have telepathical powers.”
“Do you guys want to come practise with us?” asked Elle.
“Yeah, sure. I could use some practise with my powers I don’t know how to use them.”
“That is easy. You must have your core stone exposed so take off that head band.” Alisa did as she was told. Then she transformed. It was over in an instant and Alisa didn’t notice until she look down. She was wearing a dark blue dress that came down to her knees and was bare footed after the others had transformed she saw that their outfits were like hers except the colour of their core stones. “Nice,” commented Shanon looking at Alisa and Ren’s outfits. Then they headed to the place Elle and Shanon were training. When they finally returned to their dormitories Alisa and Ren had learn a few more things that they could do with their powers. Ren learnt talk to people silently and that she could transport herself and other people to any place she wanted (to prove she could do this by transporting them to France).
“What is your important news?” asked Nick impatiently.
“The ancient legend is true,” said one of the three shadow lords he had created, he glanced around nervously at the shadowy room of the hidden steel fortress. “What is this legend?” demanded Nick.
“Uuh, well…” stuttered the lord.
“Stop messing around and give an answer!” yelled Nick. Every agent in the building flinched as soon as they heard his cry of outrage. “Okay, okay, here’s how the legend goes, the first water Delarny was laying on her death bed when she told everyone there the legend and she told them to tell everyone they knew and to tell everyone they told to tell everyone they knew and so on. Tell them that when the threat to our world comes there will be another Delarny with my same element and she will be four times as powerful as I have ever been and surprisingly she will look the same as me. All I have said is true the goddess herself told me this and that if you see her you will know she is the one said the first water Delarny then as her last whisper of breath of air left her lungs, her long blonde hair seemed to loose it radiance and her deep blue eyes lost their sparkle. She was the dull picture of death and the thought that she would be reincarnated seemed impossible at that moment. Some say that most people speak of something crazy before they die and that it is normally not true. I had never believed this tale myself, Master, but this girl I fought yesterday looked exactly the same as the woman who spoke the legend except she was a lot younger, but I could tell it was her.”
“And how do you know she looked exactly the same as the first water Delarny? Were you there when she spoke her final dying words?”
“Ah... no Master, but every book that has ever said anything about the legend and the first water Delarny always have the same picture resembling them.”
“Ok. My next question is at what level is her power and tell me about the other Delarny.”
“This water Delarny’s power is on a level I have never experience I would be extremely cautious around her and the other Delarny has telepathical power, she has a weak mind is unsure about most things, but she has a strong heart, if we had an ally like her it would be good for us in two ways, she would be constantly loyal and the water Delarny would be extremely upset that her best friend joined her worst enemies.”
“I like where you’re going with that. Nice thinking I want you to go and put that plan into action tomorrow for now you can have some rest. You are dismissed.” With that the lord fled the room as fats as he could. He used to think he was as evil as evil got, but his Master was a lot more evil than he was! He got the chills every time he was called into that room for a ‘special’ visit.
