My name is Xenia. I like to play with dolls. But my favourite play thing is Heathen, my big, bouncy, gorgeous teddy bear. Sometimes Heathen and I drink tea together, sometimes we play in the fields - cutting up worms and pouring salt onto slugs - and sometimes we just lie in the bath pretending to be fish.

One day, Papa announced he was leaving us for the girl at the butcher's, and Mama announced likewise. My older brother Olaf would therefore now be looking after us younger ones. Ma then left with Pa for the butcher's wife, and Olaf laughed menacingly.

I was very upset by this, and I stormed out of the room and up to my bedroom. Heathen was sitting there on the bed, and I picked him up and ripped off his head. Then I knocked the stuffing out of him. This made me sad. I cried and I cried and I cried.

After a while, I picked up the stuffing, put it back into Heathen, sawed his head back on and gave him a kiss. Apart from a crooked smile, he looked fine.

Heathen and I are the best of friends again. We do lots of things together: drink tea, eat biscuits and lace Olaf's food with broken glass and ricin. It's good having a best friend.
