The first time that we locked eyes I knew I recognised her. Not from this life, possibly from another.
I couldn't say it was love, simply an unhealthy fascination with a sassy woman. I liked the way she walked, the way she held herself up and the fact she found everything I said funny!
I had rarely thought about a woman in that way, at least not consciously but there I was everyday sat in the same desk looking straight at her; deluded by her forth right accent and her genetic beauty.
She looked over now and then, her green eyes painted with mascara and eye liner wondered toward me, looking for another distraction to justify her turning around just so she could catch me in the act. She caught me every time and she knew it.
Some days we wouldn't speak at all, not even a hello! It was as
if the line of our relations had changed over night and I would
sulk and scribble on the pad before me drawing meaningless
doodles to release a little frustration in the deathly silence.
Other day's she'd come sit on my desk and we'd talk for hours…
while I hid my scribbles of unrequited love under my arm.
…And things changed everyday… until one day 'poof' she was gone! Me, I would be sat in my chair searching her desk for a memory; her nibbled pen or dieing her photo of her boyfriend - I'd rather keep the nibbled pen!
I looked over again at the empty chair and turned back when the door to my right opened. I looked up, naturally to see who it was. It was my boss and someone new; the new girl.
I watched her as she pulled at her bag obviouslytoheavy on her shoulder andshe smiled beyond her wavering fringe as she adjusted the strap. I didn't know her, but Ihad the feeling I would as I casually looked back at my computer screen with a smile.
Later she came to my desk and played with the nibbled pen,
searching the end with a smile. She said her name is Shai which I
found pretty andthen asked me if I knew someone called Steph who
worked here before her. I nodded and looked across at the empty
desk. She followed my eyes, I know her! She said
knowingly. Then without a line to ponder over, she asked me
I said yes.
A few days later I waited in the bar we'd agreed to meet in; she was late, I was worried. Then as I checked my watch for the forth time I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned and smiled uncontrollably… it was Steph! She stood there smiling back at me.
Neither Steph nor I heard from Shai again. We discovered that Shai wouldn't be coming back to work as she'd been offered a better job some place else.
More importantly months later I discovered that Shai, is actually the name for the Greek god of destiny!
