Boy's Life
The walk up Broadway is always pleasant in springtime with warm sun and mild breezes and the boys are happy to be out and on the way to the market and the littlest one is holding her hand as the others gambol along and her feet feel free in her clogs with her hair blowing up and then back and when later on they leave the market to return home she carries two big grocery bags while the littlest boy holds onto her skirt and his tugging assures her he's there and the oldest boy carries a third large bag and the middle two trade punches and try to trip each other up until she says stop or you don't go in with us to Mr. Wirtheimer's and they stop because Mr. Wirtheimer sneaks balogna slices to them while he fixes her regular order of one pound thin-sliced and when they get there she rests her bags on the counter and Mr. Wirtheimer's helper Mark motions her oldest boy to give him his bag and then makes it into three smaller ones while Mr. Wirtheimer fixes her order and sneaks balogna slices to the boys as if she can't see him and when they leave the littlest boy holds hands with his oldest brother who now carries one small bag while the two middle brothers each carry a small bag and she sees them strutting and their chests puffed out because they are big enough to help and her heart bounces down Broadway ahead of them and smiles back at her
