Elevator Wisdom
They took the subway back up town and are now at their building and enter with daylight flooding in from the glass doors helping to light up the large marble foyer and right across is the elevator and the elevator car is sunk almost below floor level and all its doors are open and its lights are on and you can see just the head and shoulders of a man working there and he hears the boys say how she didn't even let them have penny candy and how now they have to climb all the way upstairs and she hoists the littlest one up on her hip and says it's only three flights and it's not even lunchtime and way too early for candy and they still protest and the man in the elevator says hey and his voice echoes loudly and it's weird to have a head on a neck with shoulders talk to you and the boys stare and the man says when you're grown up you can have all the candy you want and the boys look at him and at her and she shifts the little one higher up on her hip and pushes the others towards the stairs and as the boys go the voice of the workman follows saying only when you are grown up you find out it isn't candy you want and the boys swing around like they've been tricked and she stifles a smile and says get along now get along and I'll fix us all root beer floats and they begin the trudge upstairs
