A small change in my featured writing. I decided to "unpublish" my novella, If I Should Die Before I Wake, on Amazon. Now, instead of only having a short excerpt available on my page, the whole story is there for anyone who wishes to read it and tell me what they think. It's fairly long, but it's not broken up into chapters because the way it's written, scenes tend to jump back and forth. Enjoy.

I've recently posted my first new fiction in many months. The story is entitled, morbidly enough, "Kill Me, Please." It is a story about a very violent revenge, told from the point of view of the person upon whom the revenge is being inflicted. I listed it in the horror category although the only kind of monster that appears in it is the very human kind. But, as I went for "horrifying" when writing it, I guess that horror is the most appropriate genre to list it in. I never tried to write "horrifying" before, and I don't think I've quite achieved that here. (Maybe more discomfiting than anything else.) I don't know if this story means that I'm developing any violent or gory tendencies in my writing; it's just sometimes these kinds of stories interest me more than others. I'm obviously not ready for children's fiction!

When I wrote, "If I Should Die Before I Wake," it was a bit of an experimental effort. First of all, I wanted to write a gangster story, something I had never done before. At the same time, there was a "Twilight Zone" type of plot that was going to be running through the story. I was far from certain if this would work within the gangster genre, but that was pretty much the only way the story could be told. Then, once the story stretched out to around 60 pages, I had a bit of a monster on my hands, and wasn't sure what to do with it. That's when I decided to try the e-book route. I don't know if the experiment worked or not, but I still had lots of fun writing the story, and I think it's also fun to read. Now you too, dear reader, will get the chance to see if the great experiment was worth the effort, because from April 14 to April 18 you can download a free Kindle version of "If I Should Die..." from Amazon. After that, I will eventually unpublish it, and probably post the full story in my Featured Writing, instead of the excerpt that is there now. There really wasn't much money in trying to sell an overly-long short story for 99 cents, so I've decided to let it go out with a bang, and just give it away for free. Enjoy.

In my ongoing quest to build up the readership for my novel, The Guilty, I have listed a giveaway of five copies of the book on Goodreads (You can go right to the contest listing at http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17232441-the-guilty). I have to admit that part of me wonders if this won't simply result in more people reading the book for free, as opposed to buying it. But, the "good angel" on my shoulder reminds me that: a) one way or another, more people will read my book, which is always something to be happy about, and b) the only way to sell more copies is to let more people know about the book's existence.
