Frankie woke up with a start. His eyes flew open and he sat up quickly in his bed. Something is different. Frankie sat in his bed and did a quick mental self-inventory and his hands almost subconsciously moved over his chest and legs, as if searching for an injury. Then it came back to Frankie in a flash. I finally told someone that I am gay. This past weekend, he came out to his friend Margaret at the Valentine Dance. A wave of relief and a warm feeling washed over Frankie and he audibly let a breath out.
Frankie tossed his bed cover off and swung his feet over the side of his bed. Today was Saturday and Monday was a teacher work day, so he had the long weekend to look forward to. Frankie smiled as he moved to the bathroom at the end of the hallway and began his shower routine. He was looking forward to a small break from school, but he was also feeling good about sharing his secret with someone.
Frankie had not planned to tell Margaret (or anyone for that matter), and certainly would not have predicted that he would do it at a school dance. But after his confrontation with Bear inside the dance, his emotions had been high and his mental barriers were down. And after keeping it bottled up inside for so long, Frankie practically blurted it out to Margaret. He had no way to predict what her reaction would have been. But Margaret had been so supportive and accepting, Frankie was glad he told her.
After showering and brushing his teeth, Frankie returned to his room. He was getting dressed when his cell phone vibrated and gave a short "ping" to indicate a text message had arrived. Picking it up, Frankie saw it was from Margaret and it read, "HUD (how you doing) this morning?"
He began to type with his thumbs in response.
"i'm fine. sorry I blubbered so much at the dance"
After a few seconds, the phone vibrated again.
"inbd (it's no big deal) glad you cud open up 2 me."
Frankie's thumbs danced over his cell phone.
"tks 4 understanding. feels gud to tell some1."
Margaret: "glad it was me!"
Frankie: "so am i! u r a gud friend"
Margaret: "tks! So r u! gtg (got to go) kotc! (kiss on the cheek)"
Frankie: "kewl, l8r!"
As soon as Frankie finished his conversation with Margaret, he heard a knock on his bedroom door. His mother asked if he could help Wendy do some chores to which Frankie readily agreed. He came out and found Wendy already in the hallway. She looked up at him and said innocently, "You look happy Frankie." Frankie smiled. "Yea, I guess I am," he replied. Wendy smiled back but immediately grabbed Frankie's hand and dragged him down the hallway to their first chore.
