Chapter Forty Five
Five days later, Gabriel received a letter from Jordan.
I'm sorry I haven't written for so long. I've… been in the hospital. I was injured while travelling to a neighbouring camp a few miles away from my own. A long-range missile hit the van in front of mine, destroying most of the convoy. Only one other man, a surgical nurse, beside myself survived. I hurt my leg, but I'll be fine, so don't worry. Just got a bit of a limp now. I got your letter this morning; are you sure about the dominatrix outfit? At least consider it? For me? What's my surprise? Will I like it? I hope so… Are you sure it's not a dominatrix outfit??
By the time you get this, I'll probably be almost home. I'm due to arrive back on Monday the twentieth. Do you think you could come and pick me up? If not, I can get a ride with one of the guys on the base. I should get in around eleven.
I love you,
Smiling, Gabe picked up JJ and strapped him in the baby bouncer sat on top of the kitchen work surface.
"You'll finally get to meet your dad, kiddo." He said, pulling ingredients for spaghetti Bolognese from the cupboards. "You'll like him, JJ. He's nice. He's coming home tomorrow." The baby gurgled and kicked his feet, rocking himself in the bouncer. Gabe smiled and stroked his cheek affectionately. "You're not too bad either, you know. You're quite good at sleeping through the night. And you don't seem to get colic… Not bad, by baby standards." He kept talking while he made dinner, letting JJ get used to his voice. He'd found out when Liam and Rose were babies that getting them used to your voice quickly helped to sooth them when they were ill or upset. JJ's eyes followed him as he moved around the kitchen, until he realise the baby had fallen asleep in the bouncer. Checking the spaghetti was cooking nicely, Gabe carefully lifted JJ from the bouncer and carried him to the cot that was stood at the base of his bed. He gently laid the sleeping baby in the crib and tucked the blankets carefully around him.
