Daily Lane is thee place to live in Southern California; the ultimate suburb neighborhood. Everybody knows each other on Daily Lane. Everybody helps each other on Daily Lane. Everybody watches out for each other on Daily Lane. Everybody was like family on Daily Lane.

Our story begins when the Wallace family moved into the old Henderson house. The Henderson’s story is kind of the neighborhood mystery. They left to go on vacation to Hawaii, and never came back. The Daily Lane residents aren’t really too proud of this mystery and like to keep it behind them. The Wallace family isn’t your everyday family. They consist of four siblings. The eldest one, Lisa, is the legal guardian of her three siblings. The reason they’ve moved is that Lisa can finally afford a better place for them to live, on Daily Lane.

Their parents died in a car crash about a year before they moved into the Henderson house. The Wallace family consists of Lisa, then Luke, then Casey, and finally Amanda. They’ve always been pretty close, but living together, and helping each other deal with the loss of their parents has helped them grow closer. They moved in about two weeks after school let out. It was the summer they were all dreading. The morning of the move in, Luke, was acting a little depressed. Lisa and Luke have always been the closest of the siblings. So, when she noticed his mood she right away wanted to know what was up.

“Hey Luke, what’s wrong. Why do you look so down.” asked Lisa.

“Oh, it’s nothing. I just really liked our old house. I grew up in that house, ya know. I just miss it is all.” replied Luke.

She knew that Luke loved their old house, so she didn’t think twice about his answer. As they were moving in, a couple of men walked up to them and introduced themselves.

“Hello, we just thought that we’d come over and welcome you to the neighborhood. I’m Jeremy, and this is my partner Robert.” said Jeremy.

“Well thank you.” She shakes their hands. “I’m Lisa Wallace and these are my little brothers and little sister. Hey you guys come over here a minute!” They come to meet the couple. “This is Luke,” He shakes their hands. “And this is Casey and Amanda.” They both shake the couple’s hands.

“It’s been very nice meeting you, but we really should get back to work.” said Lisa.

“Oh yes, of course; don’t let us keep you for too long. Maybe we can have a house warming party later this week, on us of course.”

“Oh no, I couldn’t ask you to do that.”

“Oh, but it’s a Daily lane tradition. The Last family to move in throws the next family a house warming party.” said Robert.

“Oh, well, I guess since it’s a tradition. Thank you very much.”

“It’s no problem. See you soon.” Robert said as they both walked in the direction of their house.

Lisa had never come across any gay people in the current span of her life, but she really liked these two. They seemed like really nice guys, but there was still something about them that rubbed her the wrong way. They just seemed to Stepford, but Lisa was too busy to think about it twice.

About two hours later, they had all of the right boxes in all of the right rooms. They were all tired so they decided to retire for the day. Lisa left Luke in charge of Casey and Amanda while she went to get takeout from the local Italian restaurant that she heard of on the radio. While she was gone, the doorbell rang. Luke left his younger siblings in the living room to go answer the door.

When he answered the door, there was a tall boy about his age with short black hair, and a woman, probably his mother, standing on the porch with a fruit basket in her hands.

“Hello, can I help you?” asked Luke.

“Hi, I’m Jenny Johnston, and this is my son Ken.”

“Hi I’m Luke Wallace, nice to meet you.”

“Is your mother here?” asked Jenny.

“My mother; did you know her?” asked Luke.

“No I just wanna meet her; is she home?” asked Jenny.

“I’m sorry, but mother passed away a year ago.”

“Oh my gosh, I didn’t know. I’m so sorry. What about your father? He is around?” asked Jenny.

“I’m sorry ma’am, but my father passed away along with my mother. We’ve been being taken care of by my older sister, Lisa. She’s not here right now. She went to go get some takeout.” said Luke.

“Oh my, I’m so sorry. I’ve been so inconsiderate. Your first impression of me must be so horrible.”

“Oh, no it’s alright. You didn’t know.”

“Well, here, just a little something to welcome you to our neighborhood.” she said as she handed him the fruit basket.

“Thank you so much.” said Luke.

“If you don’t mind me asking, how old are you?”

“Mom.” complained Ken.
“What?” asked Jenny.
“Don’t pry into their business.”

“Oh no it’s ok. I just turned seventeen.”

“I thought you looked about as old as my son here. So you’ll be starting your senior year after this summer.”

“Yes ma’am I will.”

“Enough of this ma’am stuff. Call me Jenny.”

“Yes Jenny I will be starting my senior year this fall.”

“Well, that’s great. Ken here could always use some more friends. ”

“Mom, not everyone is like me. You can’t make friends for me.” said Ken.

“Well you can’t blame me for trying. Anyway, we’re keeping up too much of your time. We’ll see you at you house warming party. Oh and here’s our home number. If you need anything just call.”

“Okay, well thank you again for the present.”

The mother and son left and Luke closed the door.Luke thought that it was kind of strange how the mother was pushing a friendship between him and her son. Ken did seem like a nice guy though. A few minutes later Lisa got back with the takeout, and saw the fruit basket on the kitchen counter. She wondered what it was, but didn’t think twice about it. She didn’t even ask Luke what it was.

They all sat on the floor eating takeout. It was pretty much silent and awkward. They weren’t all used to the new house yet. It was empty, it was quiet; it wasn’t what they were used o with their old house. The one who seemed to hate it the most was Amanda. She was the youngest so she didn’t really know another way to deal with the move other than to hate it.

The next morning, Luke took the car to go scope out the town. He thought that he would call Ken and ask him to show him around town and show him the hotspots for parties. He called, and Ken seemed reluctant to accept, but did.He picked Ken up at his house which was two houses down and across from Luke’s. At first it was kind of awkward because they didn’t really know each other, but it eased up a bit when Luke turned on the radio. They seemed to like the same type of music, because when Luke turned the radio on, Ken got excited when his favorite song came on.

So Ken directed him to a few hang out spot for him and his friends; the local Starbucks, the local bookshop, and stuff like that, and then gave him directions to Brad Gramm’s house. He was the local party thrower. If there was a party in town, it was most likely at Brad’s house. They stopped and talked to Brad for a while, but it got kind of awkward and Ken opted to leave. Luke really didn’t understand why until they got into the car and thought back to the conversations with his mother, the afternoon before, and with Brad. He said “Not everyone is like me.” He decided to ask Ken about the situation.

“So, why did you want to get out of there so fast? I mean, you were pretty adamant about going there in the first place, what happened?” asked Luke.

“It was nothing, it just got awkward is all.” responded Ken.

“Not for me. I liked the guy. He seemed pretty cool.” said Luke

“I was just awkward ok drop it.”

“What’s the matter don’t you like him?” asked Luke

“What...Oh yeah, sure I like him. He’s a cool guy.”

“Ken, your caught, I saw the way that you were looking at him.” said Luke.

“What do you mean? I wasn’t looking at him in any way.”

“You’re hot for the guy, I can tell that face anywhere.”

“What do ya mean? I’m not gay man.” said Ken.

“Okay and I’m the Pope. Dude, its okay I am too.”

“What, are you serious? I would’ve never thought that…”

“That I was gay. Same fore me, I didn’t really suspect until I saw you looking at Brad hat way.”

“Hey, can you not tell anyone when we get to school. Nobody there knows yet.”

“But your parents know.”

“Yeah my parents know. That’s why my mom was pushing me to make friends with you. I guess you made quite an impression on her. What about your sisters or your brother. Do any of them know?” said Ken.

“No, I haven’t worked up the courage to tell any of them yet. Lisa and I are really close but I’m really afraid to tell her.”

“Why?” asked Ken.

“I guess it’s because were so close that I’m afraid to tell her.”

“Shouldn’t that make it easier?” asked Ken.

“I guess. I don’t know. Listen if you want to go back home knows the time to say.”

“Well, I don’t really want to go back there, my moms always on my case about meeting a guy to be with, let’s just go the mall or something.”

“Okay. Where’s it at?” asked Luke.

“It’s just about a mile down this road we’re on here.”

So they went to the mall; the car ride there after their talk was somewhat awkward, but not uncomfortable. Ken finally felt like he had someone to talk to, someone that he could trust. The mall was pretty big. It had two stories, so it took them a while to walk through the whole thing. They walked through some stores, but Luke, or Ken, didn’t really have enough money to buy anything. They had about enough money collectively to get a quick bite to eat.

So they went back to the food court to grab a bite. They were enjoying themselves quite a bit. They each found an unexpected friend out of each other. They each thought about it maybe becoming more than a friendship, but they also each were embarrassed to mention it. They sat in the food court, chatting and eating, and enjoying themselves. When they were done they decided that it was kind of late, and that they should get back home. So Luke went to go drop off Ken at his house.

“So thanks again for showing me around town. I had a really good time.”

“You’re welcome; I had a good time too. Maybe we could do this again sometime.” suggested Ken still sitting in the car.

“Sure I would like that.”

“Okay I’ll call you, what’s your number.”

“Oh here” Luke takes a piece of paper off the dash and a pen from the center console and writes his cell phone number on it.”

“Thanks see you later.” says Ken as he’s getting out of the car.

Luke drove away; Ken looked up and saw his sister Kira out on the porch. She was only a year younger than him, but they weren’t as close as Luke and Lisa. She was also the only sibling that knew he was gay. She saw him walk up the steps with a grin from ear to ear and couldn’t help but tease him.

“Was that your boyfriend?”

“Shut up Kira, he’s just a friend.”

“Oh sure, that’s why you have your Colgate smile on exhibition.”

“His family just moved into the Henderson’s old house and I was just showing him around town.”

“Is he gay?’
“Yeah so”

“Oh my gosh, he is totally your boyfriend.”

“Just shut up Kira, he’s just a friend okay.”

“Okay” she said as he entered the house.

Ken went into the house as happy as can be. So happy that he walked right passed his mother without even knowing. She wasn’t going to let him go without asking what happened with Luke.

“Hey, Kenny; so you’re just going to walk right passed me without telling me how it went.”

“Mom, it’s not like it was a date. I was just showing him around town.”

“Well, where did you go?”

"We went to the mall and to the bookshop.”

“Were you polite?”
Yes, mom, I was polite.

“Did you two have fun; are you going to be friends?”

“Yes mom we had fun, and yes we’re going to be friends. Can I go now?”

“Well good, and yes you can go up to your room now.”

Ken wasn’t necessarily thrilled with his mother being so nosey, but he knew that it was better than the alternative; her not accepting who he is at all. He went to his room and went straight to his computer to write what had happened today in his private blog. Before he knew that Luke was gay, he liked Brad, whom he knew was straight. Luke was Ken’s new crush, but what was torture was that he didn’t know how Luke felt about him. He was writing in his blog when his mother knocked on his door.

“Come in” said Ken

“Sorry to bother you Kenny, but Judy Thomas is having a birthday party tomorrow for little Michael, he’s turning nine, do you want to come with us.” asked Jenny.

“No it’s okay mom, little kids’ birthday parties aren’t really my style.”

“Are you sure, Judy said that Wallace family was coming.”

“Really”

“So Luke’s going to be there, you’ll have someone to hang around with.”

“Okay, I guess I’ll go then.” said Ken, and then his mother left the room

He tried to play it off, but once he heard that Luke was going to be there, he was so excited to go.He even wrote in his blog that he was excited about the party. He never would have thought that he would be excited about a kid’s ninth birthday party.

The next afternoon at the party, he met up with Luke. He introduced them to the Thomas’ and the rest of the neighborhood, but the first person he introduced Luke to was Rachel Thomas; the Thomas’ oldest child. She was sixteen. As soon as he introduced them, she pulled Ken aside to talk.

“He does Luke have a girlfriend ‘cause he is hot.” asked Rachel.

Hearing this amused Ken because he knew that he had a better chance at getting Luke than she did, but he was also kind of jealous because he knew how Rachel could be with the guys that she liked. She would usually be all over them, in Ken’s opinion, like a slut.

“No I don’t think he has a girlfriend.”

“Alright, score. He'll be my man by the end of the summer.”

“Wanna put money on that.”

“Any day; twenty bucks say I have him by the end of the summer.”

“I can deal with that.” said Ken as they shook hands.

So Rachel went over to talk to Luke and Ken left them alone. He thought that we would wait awhile until he stole Luke away from her. So he mingled with the other guests for about twenty minutes then went back to where Luke and Rachel were. They were still were, Luke looking bored out of his mind, and Rachel talking up a storm; so he goes up to them.

“Hey Luke, wanna come get a Starbucks with me?” asked Ken.

“Sure, let’s go” said Luke.
“Can I come?” asked Rachel.

“No, maybe next time, just me and Ken for today.” said Luke

They both left, Rachel with her mad face on, and Ken with his happy one. As they left they walked passed Kira and she whispered into Ken’s ear.

“Going somewhere with your boyfriend

“Shut up Kira” Ken whispered back angrily.

They left the party, gladly. Luke was getting talked to death by Rachel, and Ken was bored to tears, only because he wasn’t with Luke the whole time.

“So what’s up with that Rachel chick? She’s so weird.” asked Luke as they sat down waiting for their coffee.

“She likes you man”
“She does!?”

“It’s actually kind of funny. She actually thinks that you’ll be going out by the end of the summer.”

“You didn’t say anything to her did you.”

“No actually, I think you’ll get a kick out of this one.”

“What”

“I bet her twenty bucks that you wouldn’t be going out by the end of the summer.”

“Ha, ha, ha; that is funny. Well that’s one way to make an easy twenty bucks.”

“To tell you the truth, I was kind of jealous that she liked you.”

“What”

“I mean I kind of have a little crush on you now. I know we only met like two days ago, but we hit it off so well yesterday, who could resist you.”

“I thought you liked Brad?”
“Yeah, but Brad’s straight.”

“Oh so you can’t have Brad so I’m the replacement.”

“It’s not like that at all. Ever since you answered your door the other afternoon, I haven’t been able to get you out of my mind.”

“To tell you the truth, Ken, I haven’t been able to get you out of my mind either. I’m sorry about blowing up at you just now.”

“It’s okay, I’d react the same way too if I had thought that I was a second choice.” says Ken as he reaches for Luke’s hand. Then Luke pulls away. “What’s wrong” asked Ken.

“I just don’t want someone to see than it gets back to Lisa. I wouldn’t be able to handle that.”

“That’s understandable, but you the best way to handle that is to just tell her that you’re gay.”

“I know”

“I really want to be with you.” said Ken

“I wanna be with you to.”

“We can’t be together if Lisa doesn’t know about you.”

“I know, but how do I tell her.”

“Just sit her down, and tell her. You don’t have to build up to it if you don’t want to, you could just tell her.”

“I don’t know. I want to be with you, but I don’t want to tell her.”

“This is the only way.”

“Maybe I can just say we’re best friends or something.”

“Luke, we just met.”

“Well, we want to go out with each other, isn’t that more juristic than being best friends after just meeting.”

“I guess, but sooner or later you’re going to have to tell her. It would be better sooner, ‘because the longer draw it out, the harder it’ll be to tell her.”

Just then they saw Jeremy Craig walk into the Starbucks. He noticed Ken and Luke, and went over to say hello.

“He guys, fancy seeing you here” said Jeremy

“Hey Jeremy” said Ken
“Hey Mr. Craig”

“So formal, just call me Jeremy, you make me sound like an old man. Mind if I join you?”

“Not at all, and your timing couldn’t be more perfect.” said Ken.

“Why, what’s going on?” asked Jeremy.

“Luke here is batting for our team, Jeremy.”

“Really alright, so what’s the problem?” asked Jeremy.

“Well I guess you could say we’ve hit it off for the past few days, and we want to continue, but that’s kind of a problem with his big sister not knowing that Luke’s gay and all.”

“Aww, you two an item; that’s so sweet, but no matter what the circumstances, coming out to the people you love is always hard. You can’t push him into that Ken.”

“Thank you Mr.…Jeremy.” said Luke.

“Well your welcome Luke. But I do have to say that if you want to have a public relationship with someone, you should be out to everyone, it saves confusion, and prevents pain. So the best way to have a relationship with Ken is to just tell your sister and be done with it. She seemed to be okay with me and Robert, so I don’t think she has a problem with gay people.”

“Oh yeah, where is Robert anyway?” asked Ken

“Oh he went to New York City on a business trip. He left this morning.” answered Jeremy.

“Well thank you, Jeremy, for the advice. I think I will tell my sister. I really like Ken, and I want to see how far this can go.” said Luke.

“Well I’ll leave you two love birds to your date.”

Jeremy grabbed his coffee, and then left the Starbucks. Luke and Ken stayed a while longer just to chat. Luke was embracing the idea of coming out more and more the longer him and Ken talked. After they left Starbucks, Luke was adamant about coming out. He wanted to be with Ken and nothing was going to get in his way. By the time that they got back to the neighborhood, the birthday party had been over for about forty-five minutes. Ken dropped Luke off at his house.

“Do you want me to come in with you, for support?” asked Ken.

“No, it’s okay. I can do this by myself, but maybe come in like ten minutes or just wait here, and ring the bell in like ten minutes okay. Just in case she goes ballistic.” said Luke.

“Okay, anything you need.” replied Ken.

So Luke left Ken’s car and went up the walkway of his house. He wanted to come out, but he was still scared. So he walked up that walkway as slow as possible. He didn’t know why he was so afraid. Maybe it’s that he and Lisa are so close, and he didn’t wanna possibly ruin that relationship between the tow of them. He walked through the front door so slow that the door made a creaking sound. He looked around to see if anyone was down stairs. It looked like just Lisa was in the living room watching television, which was perfect. So he walked up to her and sat right beside her on the couch.

“Hey what’s up bro?” asked Lisa.

“I need to talk to you Lisa.” said Luke

“Sure what’s up?” asked Lisa.

“First you have to promise me that you love me no matter what.”

“Of course I do, you’re my brother, we’re family, no matter what. What’s going on here? Are you in some kind of trouble?”

“No, I’m not in trouble. I just need to tell you something.”

“Well what is it, just tell me.”
“I’m gay.”
“What”

“Please don’t make me say it again; it was hard enough the first time.”

“I don’t understand.”
“Lisa, sis, I’m gay.”

“I heard you the first time. Do you have to keep saying it like that?”

“Lisa, what’s wrong.”

“Excuse me, but you just told me you’re…”

“Gay”
“Stop saying that word!”

“Lisa, I’m your brother. Please tell me that you still love me.”

“I don’t know if I can Luke.”
“What”

“I mean, you just come up with this out of nowhere, and I’m just supposed to accept it.”

“No you’re supposed to accept me, your brother.”

“Don’t say that, you’re not the brother I know; the one who told me everything. I knew you were keeping something from me, but I just didn’t see this coming.”

“Lisa, please, do you still love me?”

“I keep going through my head trying to think of what mom and dad would say about this, and I can’t say that they would be happy, but I do think that they would accept you.”

“Thank you, Lisa”

“But that doesn’t mean I accept you.”

“What, Lisa”

“You’re my brother, Luke, I love you and I just…”

Just then the doorbell rang. Luke knew it was Ken at the door. Lisa called for Amanda to come from downstairs to answer he door; she did.

“Luke, its Ken at the door!” yelled Amanda.

“Tell him he needs to come back later, Amanda!” yelled Lisa.

“No. Let him in Amanda!” yelled Luke. Ken walked into the living room.

“Luke I don’t think that this is the best time for Ken to come over.”

“I asked him to come over.”

“What’s going on?” asked Amanda curiously.

Luke walked over to Amanda and knelt down to her level.

“We’re having a grown up talk right now Amanda, can you please go up to your room until Lisa says it’s alright to come down.”

“Okay”

“Thanks, Hun” says Amanda as she goes back upstairs.

“What do you mean you asked Ken to come over?”

“I asked him to come over just in case you reacted like this.”

“Like what”
“Like you hated me”

“Luke, I could never hate you. I hate this decision you’ve made.”

“Decision; you think that this is a decision. Trust me Lisa, if gay people were able to make a decision between being gay or straight, they wouldn’t choose to be gay.”

“Wait a minute, Ken knew before I did.”

“Yes”

“You’ve known me all your life, and you don’t tell me. You’ve known Ken for two days and he already knows.”

“It’s not like that Lisa, he understands me”

“What do you mean he understands you? Wait, I get it. You’re gay too, aren’t you Ken?”

“Yes Lisa, I am” replied Ken.

“So YOU are the one who turned my brother gay.”

“Lisa, he didn’t do anything to me, except care for me.”

“You know what. I don’t want to see your face anymore. I want to you to leave.”

“What”

“Not forever, just for a few days to help me clear my head.”

“Where am I supposed to go?”

“I don’t care where you go, just get out of my face for a few days.”

“Well can I at least say goodbye to Casey and Amanda?”

“No, I don’t want them to worry. I’ll tell them something.”

“A lie”

“Yes a lie. I’m not going to tell them that you’re…”

“You can’t even say it, can you?”
“Just leave”
“Can I at least pack some things?”

“Sure, but don’t make too much noise. I don’t want Amanda or Casey to hear you.”

Luke went upstairs to pack his stuff. He was very upset that his sister acted like that, and Ken felt a little responsible. So, once they got into Luke’s room, he felt the need to apologize.

“Luke, I’m so sorry. If I hadn’t pushed you into coming out, you would never be fighting with your sister.”

“Ken, this isn’t your fault. Like you said, it would’ve had to happen sooner or later. I’m just glad that I have you to support me.”

“But maybe…”

“But maybe nothing; I did this because I wanted to. I did this because I want to be with you, and not anything is going to stop that from happening, not even my sister.” He said as he gave Ken a peck on the cheek. “I’m just worried about where I’m going to go.”

“You can stay with me. Believe it or not, even with all my brothers and sisters, we still have a spare room.”

“I don’t know. I don’t want to impose on your parents.”

“It’s a guest room. You would be our guest. Plus, it’s no imposition, there are used to a crowded house.”

“Well, maybe if you can ask, but don’t push them. If they don’t want me in their house, it’s okay. I can maybe ask Jeremy if I could stay with him, or go to a local shelter.”

“Nonsense, you’re not going to any homeless shelter.”

Once, Luke finished packing his things, they left the house. They left without so much as a goodbye. Luke didn’t like leaving on bad terms, but he had no choice. Ken drove Luke the ten seconds or so to his house. Ken looked at the driveway, his dad wasn’t home. Hopefully his mom can make a choice without his dad being around. They went inside. Jenny and Kira were on the couch watching a movie.

“Mom can we talk for a second”
“Sure Kenny, what’s up? Hi Luke”
“Hi Jenny”

“Kira can you give us some privacy for a second.”

“Why”

Kira, give your brother and me some privacy.”

“Huh, okay” said Kira
Ken waited until Kira left.

“Mom, can Luke stay here for a couple of days?”

“Why what’s happened?” asked Jenny

“I got into an argument with my sister and she told me to leave for a few days until she thinks everything through.”

“Oh you poor thing, of course you can stay here for a couple of days.”

“Are you sure, ‘cause I can go to the local shelter, or I have an uncle that lives like an hour away.”

“Are you crazy, you are not going to a homeless shelter, and you are not living that far away from home. You’re staying right here with us.”

“Thanks so much Jenny.” after this she called Kira to show him to the guest room.

“Mom I could have shown him the room.’

“I know Honey, but I wanted to ask you something.”

“What”

“Did he do something bad to get in trouble like this, because if he did you need to tell me. We can’t have a deviant living in our house.”

“No mom nothing like that”

“Then what happened that’s so bad that his sister had to kick him out?”

“Mom, he’s gay.”
“He’s gay”

“and he told his sister, and she freaked.”

“Oh, poor thing; I have to go talk to him.”

“No mom, leave that to me. I’m kind of responsible anyway.”

“Why is that Hun?”

“Because I’m the one who pushed him into coming out”

“Oh, Honey; if he didn’t want to come out he would’ve never done it in the first place, you had nothing to do with this.”

“That’s what Luke said, but I still feel guilty. I mean, come on mom, he has nowhere to stay.”

“He has here, and he has you to support him through this.”

“I guess you’re right”

“Of course I’m right, I’m your mother. Now go up there and comfort your friend.”

“Oh, and mom”
“Yes Hun”

“Just to let you know, the reason he came out is so we could be together.”

“Really, you mean…you two are together?”

“Yes”
“How romantic”
Mom

“Okay, okay; but no fooling around up there”

Mom

“Okay, sorry, I’m just letting you know.”

Ken went upstairs to check on Luke. When he went up to the he saw Luke sitting at the foot of the bed with his head down. Luke was crying. Ken went to hug him.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do. What if she never comes around? What if she never accepts me?” He said under his sniffles.

“You can’t think like that, you have to think positive. You have to remember that she’s your sister and she loves you.”

“I know, but there’s always a chance that she doesn’t”

“Well, if she doesn’t, you always have me.”

“Really”
“Of course”

“Thanks, that’s means a lot Ken. I mean you barely know me.”

“Yeah but I already feel a strong a connection with you. I already feel like I can tell you anything.”

“Yeah I feel the same way, but I wasn’t sure if you felt the same way.”

“Well, I do. I’m going to leave you a lone now. If you get hungry, just come to my room and tell me I’ll help you around the kitchen.”

“No, don’t leave me. I don’t want to be alone.”

“I would, but my mom doesn’t want us to be up here Alone for too long.”

“You told your mom!”

“I had to; she thought you did something illegal.”

“You could’ve lied.”

“You know, I care about you and all, but I don’t like to lie to my mother.”

“Okay, I guess that’s understandable.”

Ken left the room, and felt bad about it. Luke was feeling the loneliest he had ever felt in his life, and Ken could sense it, but he couldn’t disobey his mother. All Ken wanted to do was hold him. He was torn up by this situation. With his parents being so supportive of him being gay, he wasn’t really prepared to help somebody deal with their family not being supportive. He didn’t really know what to do except try to reassure him that everything would most likely turn out okay.

He left Luke in the guest room for the rest of the night. He felt bad about it, but he would’ve felt worse if he has spent the night comforting him knowing that his mom didn’t want him to do that. Ken went to his room to think; in midst of his thoughts he fell asleep. He woke up the next morning disoriented as if that all might have been a dream; he would’ve given anything for that to be the case. Then he thought twice about that particular thought, because if that was a dream, then so was Luke and he cared about Luke too much to even think about wishing him to be a dream.

He changed so Luke didn’t think that he was in the same clothes all night, even though he was. He went to peek inside of Luke’s room, and there he was, sleeping, looking like an angel. He looked exhausted so he left him to get some more sleep. Ken then went to go check the bathroom, just to see if it was free for him to take a shower and get ready for the day. The bathroom was preoccupied by Kira, who never gets up early, so it must be pretty late in the morning.

Ken went back into his room to see the time; it was 11:26 am, which was late for Ken. A few minutes later, Kira left the bathroom, and Ken hit the shower.

“Getting ready for your boyfriend?” teased Kira.

“You know what Kira. I have three things to say about that. Number one, this is really not the time or the situation to be teasing someone. Two, you’re sixteen years old, don’t have something better to do than tease me like a little fifth grader. Three, your just jealous ‘cause I got a fine ass man you don’t.”

“Bitch”

“Hood Rat” said Ken as he closed and locked the door.

After their little stitch, Kira went o the guest room. She went with the intention of being a bitch to Luke, but when she opened the door to peek in, he looked so sad and she couldn’t go through with it. So she closed the door, but when she closed it Luke heard. He knew it must have been Kira because it was a tall girl with long hair that he saw a glimpse of. He wanted to meet her.

“Wait, don’t go.” said Luke. Kira slowly reopened the door.

“Yeah” said Kira.

“I never really got a good chance to meet you. You’re Kira, right?” asked Luke.

“Yeah, that’s me. You’re Luke.” said Kira.

“Yeah; I’m sorry if I seemed a little intimidating.I’m just a little down today.”

“No I was just wondering if you wanted some lunch.” said Kira, which was a lie.

“Oh my, lunch; is it that late in the day already?” asked Luke

“Yeah, do you want anything; a sandwich, some pasta, or maybe a salad. We have all of that stuff in our fridge.” said Kira.

“Maybe later, I’m not really in the mood to eat, but thanks anyway.”

“Okay, I’ll leave you alone.”

“No, come in. I might be staying here for a while, so I want to get to know all of Ken’s brothers and sisters.”

“Well, I don’t know if you want to start with me. Ken and I don’t really get along to well.”

“That’s okay; right now I’m not getting along with my sister. That’s part of the reason why I’m here.”

“Oh”
“Yeah, it’s a long story.”
“So how old are you?” asked Luke.
“Sixteen”
“Oh, only a year younger than Ken”
“Yup”
“So what do you like to do?”

“I’m a cheerleader at school. I like to do that.”

“Okay, okay; that’s interesting.”
“It is?”

“Yeah, I mean, my other siblings are all so much younger than me, that they don’t really do anything that’s very interesting to me.”

Just then Ken knocked on the door.

“Come in Ken.” said Luke

“Hey did you wa…” He stopped when he say Kira sitting next to him. “Kira what are you doing talking to him.’

“Nothing”

“Luke you don’t have to tell her anything.”

“It’s okay Ken. I asked her to come in.”

“Yeah, I’m not always up to no good.” said Kira. “I do have a good side”

“I’m sorry Kira. I jumped to conclusions. Will you forgive me?” asked Ken

“Sure; it’s okay. I was just about to go get some lunch anyway. I hope everything works out with your sister.” said Kira.

“Thanks Kira, I do to.” said Luke.

“I’m sorry Luke, I just…I don’t really get along with Kira and she can be a big bitch sometimes so I jumped to conclusions.”

“That’s okay. She was only here because I wanted to get to know your family.”

“I feel like an ass.”

“Well, then you’ll be a cute ass.” said Luke as he gave Ken a peck on the cheek.

“Well, I here to see if you wanted some lunch.”

“Ha, Kira just asked me the same thing.”

“She did?”
“Yeah”

“Now I really fee like an ass. So do you?” asked Ken

“No I’m not really that hungry, maybe later. Is it okay if I take a shower?” asked Luke.

“Sure; the bathroom’s down the hall, the second door on the right.” said Ken.

“Thanks”
“Sure, I’ll be downstairs.”

Luke ended up staying at the Johnston’s for two weeks without any word from his sister. With each day passed, Luke and ken grew closer and closer. Their relationship grew from caring to nearly loving. Then on the first day of the third week, Luke got a phone call, on his cell phone, from Lisa. She wanted to see him.

“Do you want me o go with you?” asked Ken

“No, I need to fight this battle on my own from now on. Thank you so much for getting me through the hardest part.”

“That kind of sounds like you’re breaking up with me.”

“No, that is definitely not the case. I still want to be with you Ken. That will never change. I just need to deal with my sister on my own.”

“Okay” said Ken.

They kissed good bye, and Luke went downstairs. He told Jenny that he was going to see his sister and that he was going to be back. Naturally Jenny was worried about him. She felt as if she gained another son in Luke. He left the house with kind of a bitter sweet feeling. He wanted to think that she’s come around and accepted that he’s gay. But this meeting could also mean that she wants him out of her house for good. Luke was very nervous.

He walked very slowly down the block, thinking of all of the things possible of what could happen. He literally dreaded this day from the time he left. He walked up the walkway of his house. A feeling of nausea overcame him suddenly. He rang the doorbell. Casey answered the door. He hadn’t seen Luke for two weeks. He jumped up and gave Luke a big hug. Luke didn’t say a word; he just went inside and found Lisa on the couch in the living room.

“Casey, can you leave us alone for a few minutes. I need to talk to Luke.” Lisa said in an almost monotone manner.

“Sure” said Casey. He went upstairs pretty slowly as if he was worried for his brother.

“You wanted to talk to me?” asked Luke.

“Yeah, um, sit down.”

“Can I sit without you killing me?”

“It’s okay Luke, just sit down.” she was very calm. He sat.

“So what’s up” asked Luke.

“I just want you to know that I accept you. The reason I had you leave wasn’t because I didn’t accept you being gay. It was because I was really hurt that he waited all this time to tell me. Up until then, I thought that we could tell each other anything, and it really hurt me knowing that you thought that you couldn’t tell me.”

“It wasn’t as simple as I just thought I couldn’t tell you. I just liked our relationship the way that it was and I was afraid that it would ruin our closeness.”

“Why”

“I didn’t know how you felt about gay people, the subject never came up with you, at least not when I was around.”

“You just hurt me. I felt distanced from you. I didn’t like it, not at all. I was angry. The only re
