"So... Lily, how do you know Cassandra?" Monica asked just staring at the girl who sat across from her at the round table. It's almost like she knew from the way she would look between the two girls.
Cassandra struggled to make eye contact with her mother. To make things less awkward, Cassandra reached up and grabbed Aaron's hand with a forced smile. Monica seemed to relax by the gesture.
Lily glanced up at Monica, trying to be as kind as possible. "Visual merchandising class. Never actually got to talk to her until the trade show at the tanery hub," Lily replied before taking a sip from her coffee.
Monica slowly nodded, taking another bite from her cherry pie. "So, is there someone sepcial in your life like how my dearest Cassie has Aaron?" With that question, everyone snapped into close attention. Cassandra's gaze moved towards Lily.
The smile that Lily gave Monica made Cassandra's stomache twist in knots. "Yes, there is," Lily responded, leaning back in her seat. Monica raised an eyebrow as Lily folded one leg over the other with arms crossed over her chest.
"What's his name?" Monica asked leaning forwards slightly.
"Correction, it's a female. I'm a lesbian," Lily said with a smirk.
Tension filled the room. Monica leaned back in her seat, just as Lily was. The look that Monica had frightened Cassandra. "You realize that it's a sin, right?" Monica questioned Lily.
Lily flicked her hair out of her face like she always would when about to go into a verbal battle. "It may be a sin, but I truly don't care. I've heard about you, Monica. About the two girls in the mall ten years ago. How you broke them apart, made them both cry... But you wont do that to me. My girlfriend, means the world to me," Lily said and folded her hands on her lap.
Monica slammed her hands on the table and jolted up from the seat she was sitting in. It took less then five seconds before Cassandra was up as well, with her hand going across her mothers face. "If you dare say another hateful word to my be- my girlfriend, I will never speak to you again," Cassandra threatened.
It took a moment for it to click into Monica's mind. Tears welled-up in the eyes of the once-loving mother. "Excuse me? Your girlfriend? What about Aaron!?" Monica continually questioned her daughter in shock. "I thought I raised you better than this..."
Cassandra stood up straight looking at her mother. "Aaron's gay. He has a wonderful boyfriend. Lily and I have been together for a few months now. You raised me horribly... I've known since I was ten, in the mall. Disown me, go ahead but for now, get out..." Cassandra said backing away from her mother.
Without any argument, Monica left slamming the apartment door behind her. Lily and Aaron sat there in silence. Cassandra looked down at Lily. "Are you crazy?" Cassandra asked sniffing, trying to hold back her tears.
"I'm sorry..." Lily said slowly and stayed there in her seat.
It wasn't even possible for Cassandra to hold back her tears anymore and she finally just broke down. Lily stood up from the seat quickly enough that it knocked over. "I'm sorry!" Lily said wrapping her arms around tightly around the sobbing girl.
Cassandra shook her head slowly. "It's not your fault..." She said sniffing and just stood there sobbing.
Aaron even stood up and patted Cassandra on the back. "I'm gonna go up a floor to Mattie's," With that Aaron left in a matter of minutes.
"You have some serious courage baby girl... Thank you for telling your mom," Lily whispered as she tried to soothe her crying girlfriend.
It was awhile until Cassandra would convince her mom to even talk to her again. But for now, she just needs to finish her schooling and continue her life.
