Interview with Miss Jane Pittman

Interviewer

: Jane, you've lived your life with such pain, how did you manage to continue on even though you were in such pain?

Jane

: Now at the age I was at, goin' through at the time, everythin' that happen to me was very traumatizin'. But before I lost Ned I hadn't felt actual pain. Goin' through all that I went through as a child, I was use to feelin' it. But when my Ned left i cried all that night, now I had never felt such pain in my entire life.

Interviewer

: Wow, well that must've been hard for you. Im so sorry. While you were going with Ned to Ohio, everyone was telling you that you couldn't go there, or that it was a bad idea. What motivated you to continue traveling to Ohio?

Jane

: Now Mr.Brown told me I oughta go to Ohio when we was free, so I was determined to go to Ohio to see him. He gave me my name so I felt like I should go on to Ohio. When Big Laura died, I owed her so I took Ned and raised him as my own. Ned was what kept me goin. I wanted him to have a good life with me, so I continued on.

Interviewer

: Since Ned was like your own, it hurt when he left you, so it must've hurt even worse when he past away?

Jane

: When Ned died everyone felt pain, but I know'd that the pain I had felt was greater than all 'a' there's combined.

Interviewer

: During the time you were living with Joe, What made you want to go see the Hoo Doo?

Jane:

I was worried 'Bout joe gettin' hurt by one 'a' those horses I had to go check to see if he was goin end up ok.

Interviewer

: So he didn't end up being ok. Did you really have any Hoo Doo against Ablert?

Jane

: Bein' honest, no I didn't have any Hoo Doo, he shouldn't 'a' killed my boy cause now I'm the one suffering. He got what was comin to 'em. He deserved it, but I didn't do anything to make him suffer any more than he did.

Interviewer

: I see. . . How do you think he felt in his last moment?

Jane

: Why you askin' me such dumb questions? I don't know what he felt, but I sure know he didn't regret doing any 'a' the things he done did.

Interviewer

: Ok, Why Don't you think he regretted it?

Jane

: If he was goin 'a' regret what he'd done he wouldn't 'a' done it in the first place.

Interviewer

: What about his daughter? What was her name.... Ah Adeline! What ever happened to her?

Jane

: Well The other girl, Christine she was the bad one, but you see Adeline there was bein' blamed for whatever she did instead of Christine. Adeline stayed by her Daddy the entire time 'til the moment 'a' his death and he died in her arms.

Interviewer

: And Christine?

Jane:

Christine was gone before he died, ran off with some boy.

Interviewer

: Last question: Do you ever randomly mourn over Joe and Ned's death?

Jane

: Thank the Lord, I don't mourn over Joe's death as much as I mourn over Ned. That boy was like my own.

Interviewer

: Thank you for answering such personal questions, I know it must have been hard for you.

Jane:

Mhm.
