Chapter 4

It's happening quicker than I thought. The sudden war has triggered an outburst of alarm the past few days. Things have been took into action quicker than I insinuated.

The majority of my fellow maids have already fled the country. They say America is the safest place to be at times like this. It was announced today that America is planning to join forces with England to save our country from total ruin. Though after some time thinking about my saftey, I have decided to stay here in country. If England must go down, then I will go down with it. The cook says my decision is outragious. "You are a young women Florence, you mustn't do this!" She says to me. I often ponder on why I chose to say. I have no family in England, I don't even have a family.

Anyways. The street isn't much better. The affect of the war seems to be showing on the street. The sky is grey and colourless, the flowers at the stalls seem dead compared to the glorious times where the street was bright and full of life. Now everything seems to be stuck in black and white. Though life may seem different, everyday living is the same. I get up early everyday to light the fire and heat up the cooker. I boil the kettle as usual, being especially careful not to set the whole kichen alite. (I haven't yet done this but I'm still weary). It's just the mood of everyone that seems to have changed.

The children that seems like a life-time ago, where happy and joyous!! Now they fear they are to be sent away to the country along with thousands of other children in England. They weep to me "Oh, Florenece we can't possibley move away.!" I too doubt if it is a good idea to take the children to the countryside. They are used to airs and graces. They are children from a rich family. Living in the country with animal dung and mud would be like h-e-l-l for the poor little things. Oh, and the parents. Their mother would be heart broken. Last time the children weren't at home she sobbed herself into a stupor! She couldn't eat nor sleep. She was sick with worry. I only worry for her healthy if her children are sent away...........
