Script By: egm94
Historical fiction

Again this was an assignment we had to do for an acting class and you had to keep the 'it' hidden near the end. My other one is called "DID YOU BRING IT?". Enjoy!

CHARACTERS:

TOM, 31 years old, intelligent, impatient, curious.

HENRY, 29 years old, intelligent, messy, tired-looking, excited

TIME: The past, in August.

PLACE: A small den of an old building.

(As the lights come up, TOM is pacing the den. There is a large, red chair in the room and he decides to sit in it. His leg bounces up and down; he decides to get up and pace again. HENRY enters with a piece of paper in his hands. He looks like he did not get much sleep)

TOM
(excitedly)
Did you bring it?

HENRY
Yes! Yes, I did. It took us hours to finally finish, but I think we got it.

TOM
That's great! I could barely sleep last night I was so excited.

HENRY
(chuckles and mutters)
Yeah, I didn't get any….

TOM
So where is it?

HENRY
(points to his paper)
Right here.

TOM
(looks at the paper for a while)
Wow. This looks great. All night, huh?

HENRY
Well, for the past three years. But it was worth it.
TOM
Yeah, it really was.

HENRY
So, do I just sell it to you?

TOM
I guess. I don't really know how this works. I think the witnesses are supposed to be here soon. This is a pretty important patent.
(points to the paper)

HENRY
Right. Wow, I can't believe this is going to change the lives of millions of people.

TOM
I know! Finally, we can get rid of those obnoxious candles.

HENRY
Yes. This product is more practical.

TOM
Just imagine. In several years, they'll remember me as an inventor that changed history.

(HENRY coughs intentionally)

And they'll remember you of course.

(HENRY smiles)

HENRY
So, you're just going to improve it?

TOM
Yeah, I'm just going to take your basic format, but improve it be longer lasting and easier to work with.

HENRY
Will I have any credit for the work?

TOM
Well they'll probably say, "Henry Woodward invented the light bulb, and Thomas Edison helped".

(HENRY nods his head in agreement as the lights slowly fade to black)
