Chapter 2

My feet carry me in auto pilot to the shop floor, my first thought is to run and defend the till but then I see them, a picture of terror plastered onto their faces. The two men are shoving food into their back packs, oddly they aren’t really looking at what they’re pulling off the shelves, and they’re both just tossing the tins into the bags.

“Stop!” I scream but they ignore me, so I run around toward the front of the till and attempt to pull the tins out there hands. “You cannot take that, your stealing!”
Shouting that angers the chunky man, which earns me a punch in the face, a blow that forces me into the food shelves. As I crash into them, the force knocks a couple of them down and I follow them, crashing painfully on top. Again I land on my elbow; my funny bone begins painfully laughing at me for the second time today.

“Fucking crazy woman, ere grab the rest of them tins, let’s go!” Both the men finish filling their bags with food and hurry up to the shop door. The blonde man looks back at me, his lips murmur something. Dazed I can’t quite work out what he is saying, the young man starts moving towards me, but in that moment the chunky guy grabs his arm, yelling at him.

“Nate come on, do you actually want to get out this fucking hell hole or what?” Nate looks back at the chunky man then back at me. He looks torn, distressed and in a mad rush, I stare at him as he decides to leave me injured and escape with that horrible man. Watching them I feel completely gob smacked as they both run out the door and into town, with stolen food and small living essentials. In disbelief I look up at the till, they didn’t even attempt to take any money, I just don’t understand, something isn’t right. People rob stores for cash or the odd necessity, not baked beans and toilette tissue?

In complete and utter shock I crawl up onto my feet and fling myself at the shop door, I don’t know why I attempted to follow them but I did, crashing through the door I quickly come to a stop.

Time seems to have paused; my body comes to a stand still and only my eyes move. Wind blows my dark hair into my brow painting it with my blood. I lift my hand resting it on my head; it hurts really, really hurts.
Looking around at what was once earlier today a peaceful sight. A small town full of happy families, nosey neighbours and fluffy pets was now a scene of destruction, the smell rancid and the sight heartbreaking.

Two cars are smashed into each other, allowing their strong smelling fluid to leak and run along the road. One of the cars still had people inside, all of them lifeless. I stare and notice a young woman in a beautiful cream dress, lying motionless upon the bonnet of a blue car.
I look away from the woman and around at all the crumpled clothes scattered around the street, I can see front doors left open and rubbish laying everywhere. I can’t figure out why I didn’t realise, when peered out of the shop window, I didn’t see all of this.
Something real bad is happening right now, my heart can sense it, it’s banging in my chest like an alarm, I pull in a deep breath in an attempt to calm myself but it fails to do so as I look back at that woman in the cream dress.
That beautiful dress, I think for a moment my brain annoyingly working through things in slow motion. My brain seems to be in shock and is been rather unreliable, I guess it’s trying to keep me calm right now and trying it’s best not to cause me to panic.

I stare at that damn dress; my eyes seem to be attempting to deceive me, its taking me a while to figure out what is so very wrong with the scene, the one with the woman and that damn, fucking, cream dress. I shut my eyes and try to compose myself, when I open them again the shock of the true sight before me hits me hard, real god damn hard.

The dress it’s destroyed ripped and bloodstained. The lady wearing it seems to have had a crash at high speed because she, well what looks like, has been thrown forcefully through the car window screen. I can see the lady’s face is not a face anymore, just a red mass of flesh hanging free, teeth and bone visible when they shouldn‘t be. Her looks broken and seems to be bent into shapes a human body should never bend. Her legs, her legs are gone. I gasp in disbelief I cannot see them, maybe they were torn off in the crash. I stumble around in shock; the sight of the dead is unbearable. Clutching my stomach I try so hard not to throw up, I just don‘t want to be sick.

Taking a clumsy step forward I step on a mobile phone and crack the screen. Picking it up I examine the mobile it’s an iPhone, quite an expensive one. Chucking it back down on to the floor, it makes a small cracking sound as it crashes carelessly onto the pavement, adding to the damage. Unfortunately I seem to have now attracted a bit of attention.

Standing behind the crashed cars are three people, they are extremely bruised and bloody, they have injures on what seems to be every visible part of their bodies. The male of the group has his shirt unbuttoned at the bottom revealing his stomach and the deep wound upon it. He is stumbling about carrying something with his left hand, his other hand is holding something up to his face, and I squint but can’t quite make out what it is.
The two ladies are standing quite still, strangely they seem to be slightly swaying and looking directly at me, staring at me. Maybe they are in shock, the crash looks like a real bad one. The women are covered in that many injuries, I actually can’t believe they are still able to stand.

I can see the lady on the left is missing half her face with one eye protruding. The other seems to have damaged her neck; her head is resting neatly on her shoulder. There is so much dark red blood everywhere, in a bit of a panic I pick up the iphone, it’s broken you dumb ass I think to myself. I can’t call any help from it. Damn these people need medical attention now. I begin to run over to them increasing my speed as I go, waving my hands madly I start shouting over to them.

“Don’t panic, try not to move,”I yell.

Taking off my apron as I run toward them. I fold it up as I move ready to place it on the face of the left lady, I’m not sure if it will help much, but I need to do something while we wait for help to arrive. Surely someone has called the emergency services.

“I hope someone has called them,” I whisper to myself.
