Chapter 4

Leading Nate up the main street through our town, the one the cars drive way too fast down, I tightly hold the hand of a strange man, a young man that I only met a number of minutes ago.  A guy that stole tins and crap from my shop, left me injured after a vicious punch to my face and then strangely came back to rescue me from the infected dead, yes dead!

Looking back over my shoulder I notice Nate is struggling to keep up, he is obviously tired after the sprint from the Undead earlier, I guess it didn’t help that he had to carry me, you know after my body decided to have a mini break down and freeze in one of the most nightmarish situations imaginable. The situation with the survivors from a car accident, that weren’t actually … survivors because they did die. They just came back from the dead and were casually hanging about the accident scene hunting for human flesh.

I mean seriously how was I to know they were dead; I didn’t actually believe the article on the computer back at the shop, the one with the hooking headline ‘The Dead are Alive.’ Like who in the right mind would believe it? I thought Nate was some crazy ass man, a guy that had spent to long in the sun when he explained about the infected dead to me.
You see … that shit only happens in the movies, well did only happen in the movies until today, because the two ladies I thought were badly injured are, well how should I say this, I guess I will say it as they do in the horror films … Zombies! Oh and yeah these Zombies don’t seem to tire. I’ve learnt this fact to be very true as we are currently running as fast as we can, from the rotting, blood dribbling and extremely hungry horde of Undead, led by the broken neck lady and her good friend pop eye. Yes those ones, the two ladies we thought had fallen behind. Yet they delusively did fall behind, but discretely continued on their mission to taste our delicious warm bodies for lunch, this need to taste soon encouraged them to catch up with us. Unfortunately the worst bit about it is, on their way they attracted the attention of other Undead who were also ready for lunch.

Weirdly I begin giggling at the strange thoughts that are dancing around in my head as I run for my life, but suddenly interrupting my giggle I hear Nate shout at me.

“Go left … run left through that alley!”

I do as he commands and dart to my left without question then quickly run through the dark alleyway, keeping his hand gripped tight in mine as he struggles to keep up with me.

As I approach the end of the alley I notice a car pull up in front of it, I can hear the rumbling of its engine as it sits patiently at the opening of the alley waiting for the driver to decide its next action. Staring at the red car as I reach the alley exit, I hesitate to continue but Nate takes over and begins to now pull me toward the noisy vehicle.

“Stop, wait … slow down. Nate you don’t know who that is!” I shout at him panicking as he continues to pull me along. This is another thing I’ve learnt today … during a Zombie apocalypse you cannot trust anyone, even yourself in my case.

“Quit pulling lady or I’m going to let go and the infected can have you for lunch.”

“Charming,” I spit back childishly. Because he’s right, I have only two options, refuse to follow and get eaten alive by the horde or follow him and hopefully not get eaten by the horde. Decisions … decisions, I whisper to myself.

Obviously I do choose to stop pulling and allow Nate to decide my fate, nothing could be worse then the violent jaw snapping crowd chasing us, could it?
Nate lets go of me, runs out into the open and straight up to the locked, noisy car. He starts to bang on the window and yell at the driver.

“Let us in … quick Harry, there is a huge group right behind us!”

The guy in the car does nothing but stares out of the front window; he pretends to ignore Nate before turning his head slightly toward him at his own pace, with a creepy smile spread along his face. Harry then lets down the window just a tiny bit, enough so his voice can he heard.

“You said you were going back for something important, but instead you return with that … crazy woman from the shop,” Harry mentions calmly.

“Seriously, dude … please let me explain in the car,” Nate begs. I can sense the fear lurking in the tone of his voice and feeling frightened myself, I cannot help but shake as I take hold of his hand again. I guess I took hold of it for comfort and it seems to be comforting him too as he squeezes it. Listening I can hear the groans of the horde grow louder and louder as the approach the entrance to the alley and I really begin to feel scared.

“Did you collect this so called gun you went back for?” Harry asks, while now casting his gaze on me.

“Harry, you know there wasn’t a gun in the shop … you know I went back for her, I had to make sure the lass,” I cut Nate off as he speaks to announce my name to him, stupid time…I know.

“Alisa, my name is Alisa,” I quickly mention, which causes Nate to turn and look at me for a split second, with a look on his face to say I’m crackers and to shut the hell up.

“I had to make sure A - Alisa was ok, you hit her real hard and I couldn’t just leave her to be killed by the infected. If she was killed by them, it would‘ve been our fault and I don‘t think I could live knowing that!” I notice Nate seems to be becoming increasingly angry as he is forced to explain himself in the increasingly dangerous world outside the car.

“Alright, alright … now you know she, wait! Alisa is ok … you can get in, but Alisa here can find her own way out of town. Nate you know as well as I do she’s just another mouth to feed, another person holding us back. We have nothing to gain by bringing her with us.”

“You can’t leave her alone out here, it isn’t right!”

“Actually Nate, I couldn’t agree more … you can stay with her and keep her company,” Harry spits evilly.

Ok so here I go, I do it again I freeze, I’m scared because these men are going to leave me and Nate out here with the Zombies. Men … I question myself. I take a quick look toward the back of the car and spot a young man taking a nap. I know him … It’s Jake; I never thought I’d say this but I’m going to! I never thought in a million years I’d be happy to see that creep. I am soo, happy to see that creep!

“Dude fucking let us in!” screams Nate while punching the car window as he now realises in less than a minute he will have to begin running for his life again.

I suddenly unfreeze, let go of Nate’s hand and begin banging on the car window, “Jake … Jake!” I yell in an attempt to wake him, I know he hasn’t heard what has been said by the evil man in the driver seat.
Hopefully I think to myself while banging, Jake is as thick as I remember him to be, yet bright enough to spot me and open the damn door before Harry  can stop him.
Thankfully he is as stupid as I remember and as soon as he realises it’s me banging on the car door, he is quick to open it.

“Alisa? Nate? … quick get in they are behind you!” he shouts as he is unlocking the back door allowing us to quickly scramble in.

Nate allows me into the car first, and then climbs in after me. He slams the car door closed and locks it behind us just in time as the horde of Zombie’s reach our position. Nate then looks at me smiling and decides to cheekily tap my chin in victory before turning toward the driver Harry with an icy expression on his face.

“I suggest it would be a good idea if you drive us the fuck out of here, don’t you?”
