Prologue

"Beware," the raspy voice whispered.

I tried to ignore it as I ran across the sidewalk, hoping to make it to the house.

"Beware," the voice whispered again.

"Oh shut it," I told it.

"Be-"

"I SAID SHUT IT!"

"Beware Gabriel," it said.

I scowled. I hate my full name. It makes me sound like some sissy.

I unlocked the door and said, "Mary! I'm home from school!"

She came into the kitchen. "Gabe, honey, how many times do I have to tell you? Call me Mom."

I rolled my eyes. See, Mary is my foster mother. And ever since day one when she met me she's wanted me to call her, 'Mom.'

I threw my bag on the floor. And said, "Mary-"

"Gabe," she scolded.

My eye twitched. No way in hell am I gonna call her Mom! "What?"

She tapped her foot on the floor.

I scowled at her. "No."

"Gabe honey-"

"NO!" I screamed.

"Gabe-"

"NO!" I screamed.

She opened her mouth to say something else but before she could I opened my mouth and let lose a scream.

"Gabe!" she scolded.

I kept screaming.

"Gabe!"

I screamed louder.

"GABREIL FOR FUCKS SAKE SHUT THE HELL UP!"

"No way in hell you dirty bitch!" I screamed.

She slapped me.

I screamed again and threw the lamp at her.

It smashed against her chest.

Her face turned red. "Go to your room."

"Gladly," I snapped stomping upstairs.

"AND STAY THERE YOU DIRTY FAGGOT!" she screamed up the stairs.

"DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO YOU SHAMELESS WHORE!" I yelled slamming my door.

"DON'T YOU SLAM THAT DOOR, YOUNG MAN!"

I opened the door and slammed it with all my strength.

"THAT IS IT! I'M CALLING DON AND WE ARE TAKING YOU BACK!"

"FINE!" I yelled.

I threw myself on my bed and took a deep breath.

"Gabriel," a voice whispered.

"What?" I snapped.

"Beware," it said.

I groaned. "You told me that already."

"Beware," it said again.

"Look if that's all you're going to tell me-"

"Beware. You're time has come. Beware. You are being dragged to Hell. Beware, Gabriel Hunter. Beware."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Gabriel!" my foster dad yelled.

"What?!"

"Come down here right now!"

"Make me!"

I heard him stomp up the stairs. He banged on my door. "Get out here now!"

"Get out here now," I mocked.

"Don't even go there young man!"

"Don't even go there young man!"

"Gabriel!"

"Donnie!" I said in the same scolding tone.

He kicked down my door.

I shot up on my bed.

He grabbed my arm and pulled me down the stairs.

I struggled.

He shoved me in the car and buckled me in.

I was about to run but he slid in next to me and held me in.

Mary climbed in the driver seat, started the car, and took off down the street.

Another foster family taking me back. I knew they would do this. They all do. They all take me back. They all hate me. They all won't accept me.

Just because I have a few problems…

Okay. A lot…

We drove for hours. And about half way through I realized they weren't taking me back.

"Where are we going?" I asked.

"Shut up," they both said.

"But-"

"Shut up, boy!" Don said slapping me.

I bit his hand until I tasted blood.

He screamed.

The car swerved.

"The bastard bit me!!" Don wailed.

"What?!" Mary yelled.

"Kill him," a voice whispered.

"Gladly," I thought to it.

I lunged at him and growled deep in my throat.

His eyes got wide.

I racked my long nails over his arm.

He punched me.

I twisted his wrist.

"DRIVE FASTER BITCH!" he screamed.

"We're here!" she said.

I looked out of the window. There were buildings everywhere and they looked the same. They all looked beat up. There was a sign in the front of the property. It said, 'Gallows Hill.'

Wait. I've heard of that. What was it?

They dragged me from the car.

Little did I know that this would become my new home. My new hell.
