Chapter 5

I didn't sleep that night. I was way too jumpy. Every little noise irritated me. I usually wasn't like that. This place must be messing with my already messed up head…

There was a knock on my door.

I jumped.

The lady from the front desk came in. "Gabriel, it's time to go."

I blinked at her. "Go where?"

"Shopping," she said like I should know.

I blinked at her more.

"Come on! Hurry up!" she said.

I scowled, got up from my bed, and followed her out.

She led me out into the entry way of the asylum, the second time I had seen it from the outside.

There were several white vans waiting out on the curb by the door.

There were other people waiting to go shopping.

Now normally I would be ecstatic about even having a couple of hours away from that place but after my resent experience it left me feeling cold and suspicious of everyone and everything.

I sighed and fiddled with the zipper of the hoodie I had been wearing for the past week.

"Okay everyone," the lady from the front desk said, "You will each get someone from here to escort you around the mall."

There weren't any groans or anything when she said this. That told me that they had been expecting this or they have done this before.

The doors to the vans opened and they began herding us inside.

I chose a window seat in the back and buckled in trying to ignore the smell of cigarettes.

I huge guy came and sat by me.

Why are all the guys that work here huge?

He turned and actually smiled at me.

"Gabriel Hunter?" he asked.

I nodded, bewildered.

His smiled widened. "Zack. I'll be looking after you today." He held his hand out.

I shook it blankly.

He was a pretty good looking guy. Like I said he was built and his slightly tanned skin showed out from under the white he was forced to wear. He had light brown hair and deep brown eyes.

He caught me staring and smiled.

I flinched away and let my hair fall in my eyes as I looked out the window again.

I heard him chuckle.

I frowned.

There was much murmuring as the people form Knives tried to engage the people they got assigned to in conversation.

"So what are you going to get?" Zack asked me.

I shrugged without looking at him.

He put his hand on my shoulder.

I flinched.

"Gabriel?" he asked carefully. "Are you feeling alright?"

I shrugged his hand off. "Yes," I snapped.

"Tell me if you start to feel ill," he said.

I chuckled. Who says ill?

It wasn't a long trip to town. But I started to twitch impatiently all the same.

I looked out the window at the mall as we pulled up to it.

Zack put his hand on my leg that I was bouncing.

I looked up at him.

"Are you nervous Gabriel?" he asked.

I rolled my eyes and said, "No."

The lady from the front desk came on our van and said, "You may go. Make sure you stay in the sight of your escort at all times."

As people started to get up I noticed that Zack still hadn't taken his hand off my leg.

What was with this guy?

He got out and waited for me on the sidewalk.

When I got to the door he held his hand out like he expected me to use it to get down.

I jumped down. I am not three.

He blinked at me and then smiled.

I walked around him, letting him catch up to my long strides.

He was keeping pace with me in no time.

I scowled to myself. I hated people taller than me. It made me feel short, and I wasn't. I made my way into the mall breathing in that smell that malls had. Then I looked around for what I wanted.

"What are you looking for Gabriel?"

I found one and pointed.

Zack laughed and followed me to the directory.

I looked at the list of stores and made the rounds a couple of times in my head before I set off with Zack at my heels.

I had always liked shopping and I was fast so I got most of the stores done that I wanted, Gap, Vans, and Pac Sun.

Finally I made it to the store that I would have died if they didn't have it.

I stopped outside the Hot Topic and smiled to myself.

Home.

I walked in and the girl at the counter smiled at me.

I smiled back.

Zack came in with me and his eyes got wide.

I chuckled at his lost expression.

He shifted my bags in his hands and raised his eyebrows at me.

I smiled and made my way to the band T-shirts.

I was planning on breaking the bank in this place.

As I was examining their selection of Paramore T-shirts, Droppin' Plates by Disturbed came on.

I smiled to myself. "Here I come I'm droppin' plates on your ass bitch," I sang to myself.

I had never been good at choosing only a small amount of things at any one store. I'm spoiled I'll admit.

I made Zack hold all the crap that I had found as I went to go talk to the girl at the front counter.

"Can you show me those earrings?" I asked her.

"Of course," she said smiling a little too wide.

I picked some earrings and some lip rings and made my way back to the checkout. I grabbed the rest of my stuff and put it on the counter.

Zack handed me a credit card and went to go examine their CDs.

The girl wrinkled her nose as she rung up some skinny jeans. "Is he your boyfriend?"

I laughed out loud. "No."

She raised an eyebrow at me. "He was watching you like he is."

I shrugged. "He's supposed to watch me."

She giggled. "I'm Lucy."

"Gabe," I said.

She smiled.

I handed her the credit card before she could tell me how much I had spent.

She blinked and swiped it.

Zack came back, set my bags down, and signed for the stuff.

"Thank you," I said.

"You're welcome," Lucy said.

Zack looked like he couldn't get out of there fast enough. He had grabbed my bags and was waiting for me outside.

I smiled one last time to Lucy and walked out.

As we were walking Zack asked me, "I suppose you like it in there?"

I chuckled and said, "It's almost as good as home."

He smiled at me.

I smiled back.

We made our way back to the vans where the others were waiting.

Zack and I went to sit in the seat that we had sat in on the way there.

There wasn't much leg room because of all my bags but it was still comfortable.

I couldn't help but feel sad as the asylum came back into view. Those couple of hours in the real world felt like a dream already. I knew my Hell would continue as soon I stepped through the door.

I sighed as the vans stopped and we all got out.

"Where's your room?" Zack asked me as he struggled to carry all my bags.

"This way," I said, my voice sounding sad, as I led the way back to my room.

Zack unlocked to door and brought my bags in.

"Thanks, Zack," I said.

"You're welcome, Gabriel," he said giving my shoulder a squeeze.

Then he was gone.

Well, I thought, at least I can wash these clothes now.

I took my things out from their bags and out them in the never-used-until-now chest of drawers.

I set the lip rings and the earrings on top of it and admired my handy work.

All my drawers were full of clothes now.

I smiled to myself, feeling accomplished.

"Gabriel," a voice hissed.

I jumped.

"Gabriel," it hissed again.

I scowled. I was getting sick of this. "What?" I asked it.

"I bet you feel special don't you?"

I scowled deeper.

"You think you are so special. But you are not. You are nothing."

I rolled my eyes. I was so not in the mood for this.

"You are nothing," it said again.

"And I suppose you are?" I asked it.

It hissed angrily. "I am worth much more than your miserable life."

"Just keep telling yourself that," I muttered.

It growled.

I laughed. "You don't scare me."

A shadow moved across the wall.

My eyes darted to the looming shape that was in front of me.

"I scare everyone I meet, boy," the voice hissed.

I backed up.

It laughed.

I stopped and stood my ground.

It growled deep and demonic. Then the shadow disappeared.

I looked around surprised that it had given up.

Something punched me in the gut.

I coughed and doubled over in pain.

I felt a sharp pain and burning on my back.

I knew what it wanted me to do. I refused to give in. I held my tongue.

I felt sharp pain and burning on my neck.

I gasped as a long scratch appeared on my neck.

I ran to the bathroom, ignoring the demonic laughter that I had left behind.

My neck and back were burning.

I took off my hoodie and shirt.

I gasped slightly.

There were claw marks all over my back. And a single long one that went all over the front of my neck.

I got a paper towel, wet it, and dabbed it over the bleeding wounds.

I gasped at the burning pain.

I whimpered slightly as I continued to try and clean my wounds.

I thought I heard something chuckle in my room.

I swallowed and continued with the task at hand.

Once I was done and I had put my shirt and hoodie back on I stood in the threshold of my room.

A shadow looked like it was pacing my room.

"Go away!" I said.

The shadow stopped pacing.

"Go away!" I repeated.

The shadow shook with a deep growl. It came flying towards me.

I put my arms up to cover my face.

Something hard hit me and sent me crashing into the bathtub.

Spots danced in my vision as I gasped for the breath that had been knocked out of me.

"I take orders from no one," the voice hissed in my ear.

The spots got bigger.

The voice chuckled.

I fought with all my strength to avoid passing out. But I couldn't stop it.

The last thing I heard was the demonic laughter getting louder.

Then the blackness took me over.
