"It's been a long time since the cameras turned off."
-Sheriff Rick Grimes, (The Walking Dead)

Follow the lives of a small group of zombie apocalypse survivors as they fight to stay alive, both against the undead and the living.

A/N: Not sure how I feel about the summary. Read it though, I swear it's pretty good.

A/N: I know this is a lot like the Walking Dead. Like a lot. The show was my biggest inspiration. So acknowledgements go to Frank Darabont and all of those guys.

Scene 1

INT. TELEVISION-DAY

Random TV show is interrupted by static, then cuts to a news report.

INT. HIGH SCHOOL-DAY

NEWS REPORTER:

We interrupt your program for an urgent evacuation notice. As you know, scientists have been working on re-animating the dead for years. And now, it seems as though they were successful. However, instead of coming back as your deceased loved ones, they have come back as cannibalistic creatures. The disease is spreading throughout the state at a very quick rate, so evacuate your family immediately. We are live at Jefferson High, where a large number of students have reported seeing these creatures.

A group of teenagers sprint by.

NEWS REPORTER:

Excuse me! Excuse me, young man! Can you stop and answer a few questions for us?

The "young man" stops, and gives the reporter a dirty look.

STUDENT:

No! We have to get out of here!

The teenagers run away, and the news reporter pauses to listen to their earpiece.

NEWS REPORTER:

We have just received information that the only safe place in the country is…

Zombies then take over the reporter and crew.

Camera cuts to static.

Scene 2

EXT. BOSQUE-DAY

KATELYN is running away from a small pack of five zombies, occasionally shooting behind her to take them out. She misses a few times, hitting them in the stomachs or arms, but eventually she hits two in the head, killing them. She then aims again, missing, and she tries again, but realizes that she's out of ammo.

KATELYN:

Crap.

She continues to run, until her foot gets caught on a fallen tree limb and she trips. She rolls over, trying to keep the zombies away by kicking them, but one grabs her leg. Right as it's about to bite her, a knife goes through its head.

NATHAN and IAN enter. Ian goes behind the remaining zombie, strangles it, smashes its head in, then Nathan goes to retrieve his knife. Katrina scrambles to her feet, bewildered.

IAN:

Hurry, before more show up.

IAN and Nathan start running the other way, meanwhile Katelyn is just standing there, staring at them. After realizing she's not following them, Nathan quickly turns around.

NATHAN:

(to Katelyn) What are you waiting for? Do you want to get killed out here?

Katelyn glances at him suspiciously, then reluctantly follows him until they meet back with Ian. Still hiking to Ian and Nathan's group's settlement, Katelyn starts asking questions.

KATELYN:

Who are you anyway? How did you find me?

NATHAN:

Is that really necessary information at this moment?

KATELYN:

Yes.

NATHAN:

Well too bad. It's information I don't really feel like giving out.

Stubbornly, Katelyn stops, arms crossed. Nathan looks back at her in disbelief, then at Ian in a "do we really have to take her?" way. Ian just shrugs.

NATHAN:

Fine. Jesus. We heard your gunshots and had to go find you to keep you from shooting more, because they're attracted to sound, and we couldn't risk our whole settlement. I'm Nathan, and this is Ian. You'll meet everyone else once we get back to camp.

He winces, realizing that by mentioning the camp, and mentioning others, he just brought on a whole new onslaught of questions. Sure enough, Katelyn starts asking.

KATELYN:

How many do you have in your group? Where are you set up? Who's attracted to sound?

Ian laughs, then turns to Nathan.

IAN:

I'll handle this. (to Katelyn.) We're set up a little less than a mile away from where we are now, close to the river, but not too out in the open. We have about six or seven people in our group. And he means the zombies are attracted to sound. So you firing off a ton of rounds didn't exactly help our safety.

KATELYN:

Well, I'm sorry.

Nathan rolls his eyes, irritated.

NATHAN:

Well are you done asking questions? 'Cause we're almost there.

KATELYN:

I guess. (glaring at Nathan.)

Nathan gives her a dirty look, before ducking into a bush and motioning for Ian and Katelyn to do the same.

NATHAN:

(loud whisper) Sam! Katrina! We're back!

A hand pushes back the bush, revealing SAMUEL.

SAMUEL:

Did you find whoever was shooting?

Nathan nods, and shifts over to reveal Katelyn. Samuel looks at her for a while, then gestures for them to follow him.

IAN:

(whispering to Katelyn.) That's Sam. He's Nathan's brother. Don't get on his bad side, he's a really big jerk.

KATELYN:

(whispering back.) Even bigger of a jerk than Nathan?

Ian nods. The four of them finally get out of the brush to reveal three tents. A variety of supplies, such as firewood, coolers, and weapons are scattered around them. Four people, EMMA, DANIEL, KATRINA, and MADISON, are walking around, each doing some sort of task. When they see Sam, Nathan, Katelyn, and Ian, they stop.

EMMA:

Did you get it taken care of?

DANIEL:

(excitedly) What was it? People? The dead guys? Did you kill them?

NATHAN:

Yeah. We took three zombies down.

DANIEL:

Awesome!!

KATRINA looks up from the weapons, and walks over to them.

KATRINA:

Who's this?

NATHAN:

Katelyn. She was the one who was shooting.

KATRINA:

(to Katelyn, glaring.) You do realize you could've gotten us all killed, right? What if some of the zombies were around here when you fired? They could've passed through here, and we'd all be dead.

KATELYN:

I'm sorry. I didn't know.

IAN:

Katrina, how was she supposed to know we were out here?

Katrina glares at Ian and Katelyn, before turning away and going back to the weapons, crouching down by them.

KATELYN:

What's with her?

IAN:

Sorry about that. That's Katrina. Technically she's the co-leader along with Samuel and Nathan, but it's kind of an unspoken thing that she runs this place. She's super territorial and protective of the group.

KATELYN:

Oh.

KATRINA:

(calling from by the weapons.) Nathan? Sam? Can I talk to you?

Samuel and Nathan walk over to her, and crouch down too.

NATHAN:

Yeah?

KATRINA:

Why is she here?

SAMUEL:

My question exactly. (looking at Nathan with an accusing expression.)

NATHAN:

She almost died. They were about to bite her before we showed up.

KATRINA:

So kill them and leave. You don't know anything about her. She could be dangerous.

SAMUEL:

You could've even killed her too. Gotten us more supplies.

NATHAN:

(looking at Samuel in disbelief.) That's sick, Sam.

SAMUEL:

(laughing.) Hey, that's survival.

Nathan shakes his head, ashamed.

KATRINA:

So what do we do with her? (impatiently.)

SAMUEL:

Eh, let's just keep her around. How much damage could she do? She's just a girl, after all.

Katrina glares angrily at him.

NATHAN:

Even if we didn't want to keep her, where would we send her? What if she is dangerous, and has an equally dangerous group? She could lead them here. That would be a bigger risk to us than just keeping her.

KATRINA:

Whatever. But if any of us die at the hands of her, that's on you.

She gets up and walks away, leaving Nathan and Samuel alone.

NATHAN:

Do you think I did the right thing?

SAMUEL:

I don't know. But honestly, who cares what's right or what's wrong anymore?

Samuel laughs, claps his brother on the back, and leaves. Nathan looks at Katelyn, who the camera zooms in on. The scene ends with Katelyn staring out into space.

Scene 3

EXT. BOSQUE- NIGHT

The group is all crowded around a campfire, talking. (See Diagram A.) Katelyn is awkwardly conversing with MADISON and Daniel, who are asking her random questions. (IMPROV.) Emma is watching, sympathetically. Katrina is staring into the fire, deep in thought. Samuel, Nathan, and Ian are all having a humorous conversation about guy stuff, like zombie killing (again, IMPROV.) All of the sudden, Katrina's head snaps up.

KATRINA:

Everybody shut up. Did you guys hear that?

Everybody looks around, confused.

IAN:

I didn't hear anything.

Others say things like "Yeah" or "Me neither", or just shake their head.

KATRINA:

Shh. Listen.

The group then hears a high-pitched scream in the distance.

SAMUEL:

What the hell was that?

KATRINA:

I don't know. It sounds like a child, probably… female?

EMMA:

Well, what are we going to do?

DANIEL:

If that's a kid out there, shouldn't we go? (excitedly)

NATHAN:

(to Daniel.) Hey, if we do go, you can't go with us. You're too young, and you might get lost.

Daniel's expression becomes dejected.

KATRINA:

Nathan, Ian, Sam. Let's go.

She grabs her knife and waves them towards the clearing.

EMMA:

Wait, you're all going? Who's going to stay and protect the camp? (she glances warily at Katelyn.)

SAMUEL:

She's right. We can't all go. What if zombies come through here when we're gone?

KATRINA:

Fine. I'm going no matter what, though.

SAMUEL:

Nathan and Ian can stay, since they got all the action last time. It's my turn.

KATRINA:

Alright. (to Nathan.) You got it under control?

Nathan nods.

NATHAN:

Always.

KATRINA:

Okay. (to Samuel.) Let's go.

They leave.

CUT TO: EXT. DIFFERENT PART OF BOSQUE- NIGHT

Samuel and Katrina are hiking through the woods, using flashlights and holding their weapons.

SAMUEL:

Why did you insist on coming, anyway?

KATRINA:

No reason.

SAMUEL:

Oh my god, I don't believe it. Katrina actually has a heart.

KATRINA:

Sam, shut up.

He laughs quietly, but doesn't say anything else.

KATRINA:

(in a worried tone.) I stopped hearing the screams. What if…

SAMUEL:

No, shh. I think we're getting closer. I hear whimpering.

Katrina stops to listen for a bit, and slowly starts nodding.

KATRINA:

I hear it, but barely.

They hike a little further, before they see a small, wooden building.

KATRINA:

I think it's coming from there.

Samuel nods. They walk towards it, and see three zombies scratching on the walls, trying to get in.

KATRINA:

There's definitely something in there, they wouldn't be acting like that, right?

SAMUEL:

Probably not.

They walk in closer, still unnoticed by the zombies. Katrina stalks around behind them, motioning for Samuel to follow her. They both then take out the zombies, stabbing and spearing them through the head.

KATRINA:

(in a soft, friendly tone.) Hello? Is there anyone in there? We're not going to hurt you.

Whimpering noises stop, and a small hand appears through one of the openings. ISABEL's face then also appears.

ISABEL:

(scared.) Who are you?

Katrina kneels down so she's on the same level as Isabel.

KATRINA:

(in the same soft tone as before.) My name's Katrina, and this is Samuel. We're here to help you. Are you alone?

ISABEL:

Yes. I got separated from my daddy. I don't know where he is. (she starts crying.)

KATRINA:

Shhh, it's okay. We're going to take you back to our camp, is that okay with you? You'll be safe there.

ISABEL hesitates, then nods.

ISABEL:

There's an opening around the back.

Samuel goes around, and comes back carrying Isabel. They then make their way back to the camp.

Scene 4

EXT. THE CAMP- NIGHT

The rest of the group is sitting around the fire anxiously, when Katrina, Samuel, and Isabel come through the clearing.

NATHAN:

(jumping to his feet, not seeing Isabel.) Is everything okay? The screaming stopped.

KATRINA:

Everything's fine. We took down two zombies.

EMMA:

What about the screaming?

Samuel steps aside to reveal Isabel.

SAMUEL:

It was her.

Everybody except for Samuel and Katrina either gasps or gives some sort of shocked noise.

KATELYN:

You mean… She was just out there? Alone?

SAMUEL:

Nope. She had those zombies to keep her company. (laughs.)

Everybody else glares at him, and he shuts up.

NATHAN:

She.. she wasn't bit, right? (worried, because he doesn't want to have to kill a little kid.)

Samuel and Katrina exchange a quick glance, because they realize they didn't even think about that.

ISABEL:

(nervously.) No. They didn't get me. They.. they got my mommy though.. (breaks off, starting to cry.)

Katelyn and Emma immediately rush to her side, murmuring comforting words and trying to cheer her up. Meanwhile, Samuel pulls Nathan and Katrina aside.

SAMUEL:

So I say we go on a run tomorrow, find her a decently safe shelter, and leave her there.

Which, of course, gets him dirty looks from Nathan and Katrina.

KATRINA:

Are you freaking kidding me?

SAMUEL:

We don't have enough supplies to keep her. We're barely getting by with this many people.

KATRINA:

She's a little kid, Samuel! She won't survive out there on her own!

SAMUEL:

You really think we can take care of her on our own? None of us, and I mean not a single one of us, has any sort of parenting experience at all.

KATRINA:

So? Daniel and Madison are young too.

SAMUEL:

We had no choice with them.

KATRINA:
We don't with her either! We're not leaving her alone, Samuel!

SAMUEL:

Didn't she say her dad was out there somewhere? So we find him then, drop her off, boom. Reunited family.

KATRINA:

She said she didn't know where he was! Be honest Samuel, in this world, that usually means dead!

SAMUEL:

Since when do you care about outsiders? Just this morning, you were pissed at Nathan when he brought that Katelyn chick back!

KATRINA:

It's different! She's a kid!

NATHAN:

Sam, it is different. There was a possibility Katelyn could've been a threat…

Katrina snorts and gives him a smug look, like an "I told you so" look. Nathan rolls his eyes.

NATHAN:

(in a snappy tone) But she's not, so we're keeping her. Anyways, there's no way this little girl is a threat to us at all.

SAMUEL:

Oh, don't tell me you're getting all sentimental towards this kid too, Nate. Listen to this, little bro. This kid is a threat. She'll hold us back. Make quick escapes more difficult. And what happens if her family comes looking for her? They could be dangerous too.

KATRINA:

You're freaking ridiculous.

SAMUEL:

Well we're not keeping her, that's for sure.

KATRINA:

You don't get to make those kinds of calls. You're not the leader of this group.

Samuel narrows his eyes and steps towards her menacingly, but Katrina glares back at him and holds her ground.

SAMUEL:

And who is? You? Please, don't make me laugh. You don't have what it takes to run this group. You can't make tough decisions. You're selfish. You're weak. If Nate and I weren't here, every single one of you would be dead. Except maybe you. Yeah, you'd be the type of person to save your own ass and let the others die.

Katrina's mouth drops open, shocked and hurt, and she turns away, obviously pissed off, and goes to her tent. Nathan and Samuel watch her go.

NATHAN:

That was harsh, Sam.

SAMUEL:

Whatever. She deserved it. Walking around all high and mighty like she does. Plus, you can't tell me that I said one thing to her that wasn't true.

NATHAN:

(hesitant) Well, I don't know. I don't think she'd just let someone die like you said.

Samuel shrugs.

SAMUEL:

Who knows? Maybe I was wrong about that. But maybe that'll put her in her place. Maybe-

Samuel is cut off by a scream within their camp. Nathan and Samuel both turn around quickly to see Madison, who was kind of on the outskirts of the camp, get bit by a zombie on the arm. Before it can get her any more, it is bashed across the head by Katelyn with a bat. Samuel and Nathan sprint over quickly, and soon everybody is gathered around Madison, who is keeled over on the ground. Multiple people start shouting.

NATHAN:

Is this the only one?! (looking around urgently and worriedly)

KATRINA:

Simultaneously

This is the first one! I thought this place was safe! How did it find us out here?! (frantic)

EMMA:

Madison! Oh my god!

DANIEL:

Is she okay?! She's not okay, is she?

Everyone else is either crying or has a look of disbelief on their faces.

NATHAN:

Guys, there's no more, right? That was it?

EMMA:

(screaming) Who cares?! That one got Madison!

Madison weakly looks at the bleeding gash on her arm, and starts crying.

MADISON:

I.. I don't want to die.

KATELYN:

Oh my god. Oh my god. There has to be something we can do, right? (Looks at everybody with a look of despair)

EMMA:

Yes, yes, of course! We… we can…

Emma looks at Katrina, Samuel, and Nathan desperately for help. All three exchange sad, helpless looks, and Nathan slowly shakes his head. Emma bursts into even more tears, and hugs Madison tightly.

KATELYN:

No, no, there's gotta be something we can do! Anything! She can't die like this!

SAMUEL:

Katelyn, there's nothing any of us can do. We can't cut her arm off, none of us have any idea of how to do that and it'd be a bigger risk anyway.

IAN:

But we have to do something. She shouldn't have to suffer like this.

Katelyn looks at Katrina, and nods towards a gun on the ground.

KATRINA:

No. No, I can't. I really can't do that. I'm…

Katrina looks at Samuel, and remembers when he called her weak, and then nods, ashamed. She kneels next to Madison, who looks up at her, terrified and suffering.

KATRINA:

Madison, sweetie, I promise it'll be over soon. This is for your own good. It'll only hurt for a second. I'm so sorry.

Katrina finds the gun, and gently holds it to Madison's head. Madison, realizing what's going on, continues to cry, but squeezes her eyes shut. Everybody turns away, waiting for the gunshot, but it doesn't come. Nathan and Samuel turn around to see Katrina with her face buried in her hands, the gun on the ground.

SAMUEL:

(murmuring quietly to Nathan.) She can't do it.

Samuel then gives Nathan a meaningful look, and Nathan nods.

NATHAN:

Tell Jim to get Isabel and Daniel out of here. They shouldn't see this.

Samuel nods, then relays the info to Jim, who silently ushers Daniel and Isabel away.

Nathan walks over and picks the gun up off the ground, putting a hand on Katrina's shoulder. Katrina looks up.

KATRINA:

I… I can't do it.

NATHAN:

I know. It's okay. I got it.

She gets up and walks away from Madison, whose eyes are still closed. Nathan kneels by Madison.

NATHAN:

Hey, Madison.

Madison opens her eyes, still crying, and looks at him.

MADISON:

It really hurts.

NATHAN:

I know. It's gonna be all okay though. You won't have to go through this for much longer. I'm so sorry, Madison. Just know that we all love you.

Madison nods, and closes her eyes again. Nathan looks around at everybody else, who is either turned away, watching nervously, or, in Samuel's case, just standing there uncaring. Nathan takes a deep breath, then the camera cuts to the rest of the group when the gunshot sounds.

AAAAAAAND scene. Tell me what you think!
