Author's note: I'm trying a few new things in this short story series, so if you notice and mistakes or gripes in this first part LET ME KNOW!!!! All comments are really appreciated and taken on board, I intent to use this first chapter as a test if it's liked as it is with only a few mistakes then it'll stay up if it needs fixed I'll fix it. I have six or seven parts planned and have a sequel series planned but will decide whether or not to do it depending on reactions on this first series. I really hope you enjoy this series. My influences are "The Walking Dead" "I Am Alive" "I Am Legend" "Dawn of The Dead" these types of stories always interested me so I decided to write one and I hope you enjoy.
Thump... thump... thump... thump... thump... My heart is slamming against my chest as I lay against the cold wall, I can feel a cold sweat dripping down my forehead, a shiver down my spine and a tear down my face. I can hear the moans of the dead circulating around the building I now reside in. I begin to recall memories I had believed to be long forgotten, The grassy banks of the park, running up a slide with… with… Harry that was his name, I wonder if he's still alive. I remember the weekends at my grandparents with my sister and cousin as we played games involving brave knights, space and most times superheroes with secret identities. I remember when we were in costume my granny would call us by our superhero name and always act shocked when we told her it was us. My first kiss. My first car. My first kill … a young man, probably only about nineteen or twenty, I stabbed him and he didn't even flinch or react. He kept moving at me, I tried to get him to stop, he attacked me… I grabbed the bat and swung at his head, once… twice… a third time… a forth… a fifth… a sixth… and that was only the beginning, I began killing like it was normal… it was, it was kill or be killed their was no other choice. The world I once remember is gone and now its nothing but a war zone of people fighting for survival, willing to backstab any who get in their way. Except her, she cared, she believed we could all survive and that we would have a happy ending… a happy ever after, it could never come true but the thought is what encouraged me to fight another day and I'll never forget the words she said "Don't be afraid… I'm always here". I'm not afraid, It always works out in the end, maybe not the way you planned or the way you wanted but in the end whatever will be, will be, The future's not ours, to see. My granny used to sing that to me… I'm not afraid anymore.
31st December 2012
I began walking down the same stairs that I had walked down every day for the past year, every morning at eleven o'clock, I'd walk around the village looking for jobs, get rejected everywhere and walk home. This time it was different, it'd be the last time I'd walk down those stairs, the last time I'd call this place home. I carried the cardboard box full of all my useless shit and put it in Shaun's boot. I turned to my left and saw the landlord looking out the window with a smile, he was happy I was going. I didn't really have much of a choice, he is evicting me after all. I couldn't afford the rent, the rent of the worst apartment in town, luckily Shaun said I could stay at his. I don't really like change but I don't think I have much choice, it's that or live with my parents and god knows I can't spent a minute listening to their constant nagging. I got in the car and sighed, Shaun sat in the driver's seat, "I always knew from high school you'd be homeless eventually"
"Very funny" I replied, I wasn't smiling
"Don't worry dude, you can stay at mine for as long as needed unless I get a girlfriend and we need the couch if you know what I mean" he laughed, Shaun had probably the dirtiest mind humanly possible, but he was an alright guy. He couldn't hurt a fly and believe it or not was quite the gentleman.
"I'll be dead by the time you get a girlfriend" I laughed back
"Ooooh burn, don't forget whose putting ya up you little shit" We laughed it off, the car went silent for a few minutes. I decided to break the silence. "So any plans for the New Year?"
"Fuck yeah man! Out tonight, gonna get wasted! Find a girl… probably a blonde… very drunk"
"Sounds just right"
"Babysitting for my sister, it's going to be wonderful"
"Wow… That's exciting…."
"God, that child drives me nuts, she's a spoilt brat but I need the cash"
"No shit, you just got evicted and you've no job"
"Thanks rub it in" The rest of the ride was pretty silent. I can't believe I have to babysit on New Year's, I should be out there partying and finding someone, unfortunately I can't afford to so I have to mind my niece, Abigail. My sister Dana Connelly had married some big fancy hot shot with a stupid name. Darius… who calls their child Darius. God, I wonder how Dana can stand him, he probably came up in a big Mercedes , lifted his sunglasses and said "Hello, I'm Darius, Darius Connelly"… What a dick. Dana was really down to earth, she was a bit of a tomboy when she was younger but she was my older sister. Any time I needed her, she was there and anytime I needed her she was there. Darius however thought I was useless and wanted to keep away from me as much as possible… prick. Dana and I were odd for a brother and sister, we never fought, we were incredibly close like best friends so when she heard about my money situation she immediately wanted to help. So I had to mind Abigail, Dana and Darius's child. She looked very like Dana. Dana looked incredibly feminine now and was regard as beautiful among all her friends and mine. She had long brown hair which she styled straight with a swooping fringe she had piercing bright blue eyes and youthful skin. Abigail was similar but everyone remarked on how she had her mother's eyes… I can't see it and wish people would stop going on about it. Their eyes, big deal. Darius looked like a gorilla, a gorilla on steroids, a gorilla without a hair on his head could be a side effect from the roids. My parents seen me as a failure, a disappointment and a slob who refuses to do anything with my life. I have a law degree but I hate it, I'd rather be homeless.
A sudden stop of the breaks, we'd arrived at Shaun's. He pulled his beanie hat off an revealed his short blonde hair and well shaven face and turned to face me "welcome… to my humble abode" he said with a laugh
"Looks like a shit hole" I replied jokingly
"Fuck up it's better than living in that rundown apartment of yours"
"Point made" I said with a smile. I unpacked my stuff and got ready to go, I needed a shave but I didn't have time. I wore my faded red hoodie, my jeans that were ripped badly around the bottom, my fake black converse and my grey beanie hat to cover my messy brown hair, it wasn't really long or short but still it needed a cut. I got on the bike and headed to Dana's. I just saw Darius enter his big black Audi as I got off my bike, he walked right past me in his big suit and got in his big fancy car without even saying hello….. dick. I walked up to the door and rang the bell as I waited for an answer I looked out at the street and saw Darius shooting me a bit of a distasteful look, I gave him the finger and stuck my tongue out. Childish but he deserved it. I quickly stopped and turned round as I heard the door open, my sister said my name and gave me a hug. "Alex! It's been too long"
"Dana!" The hug lasted a while until she pulled away "Sorry Alex gotta dash, we have a table booked and"
"Don't worry, I understand" I interrupted
"Thank you, don't worry you'll get out of this slump! I believe in you" she said as she tried to run to the car in her high heels, she got in the car put on her seat belt and waved as Darius drove off. I watched Darius's big fancy car drive off as I stood there in the freezing cold waving. Lucky Bastard. I opened the door and entered the house.
The first thing I heard was "Uncle Alex!" and I knew my torture was just beginning "Great… Happy New Year Alex!" I thought. I wasn't good with kids they were weird and Abigail was Darius's biggest fan, I think he brainwashed her with propaganda. She was dressed in a bright pink onesie with unicorns and rabbit slippers "Alex do you want to play Monopoly?"
"Uh Nah, what's on the TV? Spongebob! That looks great!" I said as she stared at me awkwardly "Don't you wanna watch Spongebob?" She continued staring before saying
"I'm nine Alex… not seven, Daddy tells me not to watch stuff like that" She said in a real wannabe smart sounding voice.
"I'm sure he did" I muttered under my breath
"So do you want to play monopoly?" she said again but this time with a huge smile and she was filled with excitement. "That could take hours" I replied
"It's only seven, Daddy says I can stay up to twelve tonight! I'm so excited! Think of all the things we can do!"
"Yay" I whispered to myself
"We can play Monopoly and Cluedo and watch Cinderella and--"
"How about we watch a movie instead, Monopoly is shit-"
"That's a swear!" She said with a frown
"Shit sorry, won't happen again" I said apologetically
"I'm going to tell Dad"
"You could… or we could play monopoly"
"Really?" She said as she ran up to me
"Yeah I suddenly feel like it" I lied
"YES! Prepare to lose!" She said
Then began the most agonising three hours of my life, playing possibly the most boring game ever invented but finally I won. "I don't get it! I had Mayfair! I always win with Mayfair! You cheated!" She shouted
"I didn't cheat" I replied as I walked over to the sink for a glass of water
"Well, you must have I never lose"
"Look how about we watch a movie and I'll share some tips on how to be better" I said as I walked back over the table.
"Ok can we watch Cinderella!" She said suddenly filled with energy
"What about Lilo and Stitch?" I love Lilo and Stitch, Cinderella however is like watching paint dry.
"Yeah ok!" She sprinted to her bedroom and got the DVD and slotted it in. We sat together on the couch and began watching the movie. I couldn't help but think sure this child is annoying as hell but part of me reminds her of Dana when we were younger. She is just a child after all and she isn't the worst person I could spend New Year with. Shaun is the worst drunk I know. "Uncle Alex, Mom was telling me about a poem that your mom used to read to you what was it?" she said with a yawn. We'd been watching the movie for about half an hour when she asked, "It was called Oh the places you'll go and it was by Dr Seuss."
"Will you read me it?" she said as she lay herself on the couch and rested her head on my leg. "Yeah let's see what all I can remember of it" I said with a smile. "Congratulations! Today is your day. You're off to Great Places! You're off and away! You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own.And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go." I looked over at Abigail and found her sleeping but I continued rereading the poem for old time's sake until I spoke the lines which felt so inspirational to me that I couldn't believe I was the one speaking them. "You'll be left in a Lurch. You'll come down from the Lurch with an unpleasant bump. And the chances are, then, that you'll be in a Slump. And when you're in a Slump, you're not in for much fun. Un-slumping yourself is not easily done." I sat for several minutes just thinking about those words and slowly felt myself falling asleep.
Bang… Bang… Bang… Bang … Bang… Bang
My eyes slowly opened as I gazed around the room blinking constantly to un-blur my vision, I wiped the sleep from my eyes as I yawned. Bang…Bang…Bang, My eyes slowly moved towards the clock above the fireplace. It was 3AM, Who knocks a door at 3am? I thought. I moved Abigail's head from my leg and lowered her to the pillow, how she slept through the rackets I'll never know. Bang… Bang… Bang… "I'm coming now" I said with a slight whisper. I reached the cold door handle and felt the nerves in my hand awaken, I turned the handle and opened the door. When the door was open I wiped the sleep from my eyes and looked into the darkness of the night but there was no one there. "Hello?" I said silently, taking a step outside I suddenly felt my sock moisten as I stood on the cold ground, it must have been raining the night before. I ignored the cold feeling making its way up my body and walked into the freezing cold night. I looked to the left and then the right of the street. That's when I saw him, some skinny guy who looked about seventeen or eighteen. The guy could barely stand. "Fucking pisshead" I shouted at him and walked back in slamming the door. Abigail sturred in her sleep and then looked up at me "What's going on, Uncle Alex?" she said while yawning.
"Nothing, Abigail just some guy at the door" Alex said sitting down beside her again
"He's just lost"
"How could he be lost?"
"It's just dark"
"It's really late though, he should be sleeping"
"I know but I'm sure he'll get home fine-" Bang…Bang…Bang, the noise returned. "Abigail, go to your bedroom and I'll sort this out" she nodded before walking into her room and shutting the door. I'm gonna give this fucker a piece of my mind I thought, I walked towards the door and heard the banging continue. "OK listen to me, pisshead" I said as I opened the door, before the door was even fully open there was a sudden thud. The noise was so loud and random that my heart felt like it had skipped a beat. I quickly jumped back from the shock of seeing this man hit the floor. "Jesus, how much have you had to drink?" I asked but received no answer, I was given only mere mumbles and grumbles. I don't have time for this I thought as I tried to figure a way to get this man to leave me alone. "Look mate, I'm going to help you up and get you home alright? Come on, let's get you home" I reached down to give him a hand, as my hand approached I noticed his head turn suddenly and his eyes almost lock onto my hand, as it got closer his whole body stopped moving. My hand was now inches from his when all of a sudden he let out a shriek and leaped at my hand, instinctively I quickly pulled my hand away from his snapping mouth. I took a few steps back and looked at my hand, I was fine. "I'm trying to help you!" I shouted, again I got no response but pained moans and groans as he stared up at me with his jaw dropped. Abigail and I had left a lamp on as she was afraid of the dark, the light from it reflected in his eyes, something wasn't right. They looked … lifeless. "Are you… Are you alright?" I asked, this seemed like more than just a drunk. He lifted himself up onto his feet, I could feel myself sweating and shaking with fear. "Good your standing… you can go now" the man didn't go, instead he walked towards me. I felt my heart thud against my chest. "Look man, I'm warning you… Leave" He didn't respond, he just got closer and closer. I ran to the kitchen worktop and pulled a knife from the knife block and pointed it at him. "Look man, just … fuck off", The man got closer and closer, his speed increasing, his arms outstretched. "I said fuck off!" I shouted at him and swung the knife at his arm and cut the side of it, the blood oozed out buy the man was unfazed and continued walking, I lifted the knife to throw. "I mean it!" I shouted and threw the knife at his shoulder and watched as it lodged in.
The man kept walking, unfazed and uncaring. I grabbed another knife, my hands sweaty and my skin sticky. What was I supposed to do? He was threating me, invading private property and also breaking and entering. My mind blanked as I stared at this man just walking towards me slowly increasing in speed until he grabbed my out stretched arm. The man was skinny but he had the strength of ten men his size as he pulled my arm towards his mouth, I pushed back and tried to reach for the knife block. "GET OFF ME!" I shouted, my fingers were just touching the butcher knife, I was pulling away but the more I pulled the closer he got. I was getting closer, I could almost grab it. Almost… almost …. Almost … GOT IT! I spun round and shoved the knife into his heart, he took a few steps back and released my arm but kept walking towards me. I turned and ran for the cloakroom of the house. I opened the door and searched for Darius's cricket bat frantically as the man got closer and closer to me. When I finally got it, I wrapped my hand around it and turned to face the man, he was less than a metre away now. I didn't think twice and I didn't hesitate, I swung the bat at his head as hard as I could and could see the dent in his skull from the hit. He kept walking… "This… this isn't possible" The man let out a shriek and I hit him again, he turned to face me so I hit him again and this time he fell over. Is it over? The man's now still body suddenly jerked and he began pulling himself toward me. My heart pounded as I raised the bat above my head and swung. Once… twice… a third time… a forth… a fifth… a sixth… I stopped. I looked at the bloody mess on the floor, at the face of the man I just killed, he wasn't recognisable. His face was destroyed, his skull crushed in different places. You could see where his skin fell into a gap in his skull, one of his eyes oozed and his teeth lay on the floor. I didn't need to check. The man was dead.
I dropped the belt and looked at my blood hands and clothing, I turned and ran towards the sink and vomited. I could feel my entire body weaken, I could feel my insides churning … What have I done? I'm a killer, a murderer, a monster. I'll go to jail, never see my family again or live my life the way I'd always dreamed… I've ruined it all, I've destroyed my chances of living… What have I done…
"A…Alex?" I heard a young voice calling for me in the dark. Abigail
"Abigail… don't come round her ok? Just stay where you are… Do you hear me? Abigail?" A piercing sound stuck my ears as she screamed. I moved from the sink and lifted her into her room, I set her on the bed and closed the door. I sat on the chair beside her. The blood from my arms and clothing had rubbed onto her pink pyjamas with the unicorns. Her skin was pale white and she was shaking. "Abigail… Abigail" she never spoke "Abigail… You shouldn't have seen that, I'm so sorry" I said and hung my head in shame. "Y..you killed him?" she asked
"Yes" I said, I couldn't look at her...How do I explain this?
"He attacked me… I tried to warn him"
"Why did he attack?"
"I don't know" I said as I finally began to raise my head and look at her again.
"Did you have to?" She asked
"Did I have to what?"
A silence soon flooded the room, how could I answer that… Was there another way, another way to have solved the problem… Did I really have to kill him, he could have just been sick. I could have helped him, but what if I couldn't, what might have happened to Abigail? Would he have killed her? Or Me? Did I really have to kill him? Did I? "Yes … Abigail… Yes, I had too, he could have attacked you or worse… I had no choice" She nodded before lying back in her bed and cuddling her teddy. "I wish mummy and daddy were here"
"Me too" I said, I decided not to stay in the room with her, she needed some time alone. I was going to have to move the body, I couldn't just leave it lying there. Did I have to kill him? Did I really? I can lie to her but I can't lie to myself… I killed him because I was scared, I didn't know what to do but could I have helped him… did I really have to kill him? I slowly closed the door to Abigail's room and rested against the door and whispered to myself.
"I don't know"
