This is a short extract of a horror story that I plan to write. It starts by describing a dreary and apparently uninhabited area, which we soon discover to be not so deserted after all...

I Waited In Silence

The cold, piercing air was still. Occasional thunderbolts interrupted the dreary atmosphere and lightened the coal-black sky. An owl, hooting in the distance, was the sole creature to be heard. Amongst the fog were the remains of what once must have been a grand and imposing castle. Its walls, decomposed and seemingly brittle. Its small windows, giving visibility on nothing but a bare corridor, were merely illuminated by a dim light. Around it, was a graveyard of dead vegetation, that echoed the mood of the whole place.

Suddenly, a cold and trembling hand caressed my cheek from behind. I felt paralysed. I was convinced of being alone in this kingdom of the dead. A tingling shiver traveled through my body. Then, expecting the worse, I slowly turned around.


Before me stood nothing. Nothing of what I had expected to see. The worse was yet to come. I tried shouting for help, but couldn't. Low and interrupted sounds were all that my ice cold lips could emit.

I waited in silence.

The bitter wind was stinging my uncovered face. The encompassing and bare trees, reaching out with their claws for my defenceless body. There was nothing I could do. With tears in my eyes, I awaited my tragic end. I curled up upon the humid ground, preparing myself to join the lifeless plants.

Then I waited.

I waited in silence...
