I woke up from the chaos that I've heard on the street. It was not really the kind of chaos that will bother you from your deep slumber, but it was a much quiet one -- only that it will send a terrifying chill on your system and worse, into your soul. The sound that I've heard was like a growl, a hungry growl and a voice of a terrified woman who is about to face her death.
"Heeeeelppppp meeeeeee..." Said the faint voice of the woman from afar. "Heeeeelpppp... Pleaseeeeeeeeee..."
But the monster from hell continue to growl mercilessly. I decided to get up and see what's happening outside. Why does everybody still asleep if there is such a merciless creature killing a woman outdoors? I opened my curtains a bit, enough for me to see what is going on. Beneath the moonlight, what I saw made me puke. The man-like creature looks like he's eating the woman! And he's not just eating it! He's devouring it passionately as if Cannibalism is an art. My stomach trembled but curiousity doesn't stop me to observe more. I decided to get my telescope from my drawer and took a closer look. The man is not a man at all! It was like a monster from one of the George A. Romero's movies that I saw -- only this isn't fantasy! It is real. The man is mutilated, with sharp, razor-edge teeth coated with blood and his whole face was covered in blood. His skin is like the color of granite and his hands are claw-like fingernails. The woman is dead! She's dead but she died with her eyes remained open. The sensation of seeing this scene from my very own eyes sent me thousands of electrical sparks on my nervous system. I wanted to shout. I wanted to tell myself that this is a dream. I have to wake up! -- but no, this is reality! I have to face it. I hurriedly phoned Jake to tell him what I saw and also, to save him.
"Jake," I said breathlessly. "Jake, you've got to listen to me."
"What? What do you expect me to hear at this, uh, 12 in the morning? For God's sake, Kaye, I wanna sleep," Jake said.
"No! This is serious! This is an emergency! I mean, a big one!" I said. "Would you even bother to look outside?"
There is a long pause for a moment. Then suddenly, Jake broke the silence.
"Why?... Oh fuck, some kind of a punk dressed up like a zombie? Haha, I don't get it! Is this what you call an emergency? Because, you know, Kaye, this isn't funny!" Jake said sarcastically.
"Listen Jake! I'm not kidding. I saw what that punked did to a woman. He ate her alive! I mean, he devoured it like she was some kind of a pizza. Please Jake, you've got to believe me. You've gotta call the police! Save your family!"
"Okay, okay. But if this is a joke, promise, I won't forgive you," Jake threatened. "I gonna bring my cellphone in case something happens. Take your phone with you,"
I sighed deeply. "I will. Thanks a lot. Let's save each other's lives, punk,"
I hurriedly fixed myself. I put my jackets on, tossed my pajamas on my bed and replaced it with my favorite jeans and a comfortable running shoes in case the situations goes really bad. I also packed my emergency backpack. Tossing my flashlight, three spare batteries, swiss knife, first-aid kit, wallet and extra shirts, I know that I am ready for an emergency. I am going to fight for my life no matter what because seriously, I smell danger. I walked into the long hallway, checking out my parents' room. But they were nowhere to be found. I cleared my throat, feeling nervous. Did that punk break into our house? I searched for my swiss knife on my backpack, trying to be brave.
"M-mom? D-dad? W-where are you?" I called. "Leah?" I called my younger sister's name.
I checked on Leah's room. She was there, peacefully sleeping. I woke her up. "Leah, Leah, wake up!"
Leah woke up irritably. She was eyeing at me sharply. I know she hates being woken up in a very rude way, but if it involves saving her life, why not?
"Leah, where's Mom and Dad?" I asked quietly. My voice is almost a whisper. I can feel the fear in the air. My palms were sweating. My heart was beating so loud that it sounded like a jackhammer.
"I don't know. Did you check in their room?" Leah asked, tossing her curly blonde hair aside. "Just please, let me sleep," Leah was about to go back to her bed but I gently grabbed her arm.
"No, Leah, this situation is not a time for sleeping anymore! Look, you're 12, and maybe I couldn't even explain it to you no matter how hard I will try, but there's a chaos outside. A monster. But this is not a monster from the movies. This one's real.. and..."
I am not still not finished to what I'm saying when a strong force bulged Leah's door open. It was Mom and Dad! And they turned into a creature like the one I saw outside. Granite skin, blood-coated sharp teeth, bloodshot eyes, claw-like fingernails and saliva dripping on their mouth. Fear covered my heart -- but I wouldn't back down - not now. I have to save myself and also my sister from dying. I have to do it. I know I have to.
"Mom? Dad? Today's not Halloween," Leah said jokingly, smiling.
"No, Leah, they're not Mom and Dad. They're zombies," I said, eyeing those two monsters sharply. As they slowly lingered closer to us, I searched quietly at Leah's room to find anything that could kill my zombified parents. This is the hardest thing to do - killing the ones that you love but in order to survive, I must do it. Finally, I spotted a steel baseball bat beside Leah's bed. I hurriedly grabbed it and slam the bat to my zombified parents heads. I grabbed Leah's hand and run as fast as we could.
"Kaye, what the hell is that?" Leah asked, her voice shaking. "What the hell did you just did to Mom and Dad?"
"I told you, they're not Mom and Dad. Come on, let's go to my room and fix yourself. Wear my clothes, we're going out. I'll explain everything to you later," I brought Leah to my room and shut the door. I gave her my T-shirt and my jeans and one of my favorite trainers. Good thing Leah and I both have the same size. As soon as we finished packing all her things up, Leah and I headed out to the door. But I could hear heavy footsteps following us -- the footsteps of my zombified parents.
"Hurry up, Leah, or else, we gonna die," I said, grabbing her hand.
I could hear Leah's sobs between my heartbeat. It was so painful to hear those sobs. But we should be strong, for no one is going to save us but ourselves. I almost forgot about Jake. Is he allright? I need to save him. Just as we're heading downstairs, a strong force jumped on my back causing me to lose balance and fall. My zombified Mom came running on me, hearing her angry growl. I can sense her hunger. She grabbed my shirt and sniffed. She could smell the freshness of my blood. I could also smell my death coming for me. I closed my eyes, trying to think of a way of how could I escape. I couldn't move. The creature is so heavy on my chest that I find it hard to breathe.
"Leah, go now, you should leave!" I said to Leah, speaking with my last strength. I could also feel the weakness inside of me.
"No! I wouldn't leave you here Kaye!" Leah said, crying.
"Don't be absurd, little brat, go now! You should survive!" I said angrily.
I could hear the clock from the kitchen ticking merrily, as if they were celebrating my death. Once again, my now zombified mother howled once more and as she was reaching for a bite of my flesh, drips of blood splashed on my hair and on my face. The hungry monster fell flat on the floor. Realizing that my monster mom is dead, I stood up breathlessly, my heart covered in terror.
"Kaye! You're alive!" It was Jake. He turned on the light that was on the kitchen. "I thought something bad happened to you. Where's Leah?"
"Here," Leah showed up behind the darkness that was covering her. "What is really happening?"
Jake breathed deeply. "I don't know," He said, tilting his head down. "But it was total madness. My parents became like on of them, too,"
I cried and buried my head into Jake's chest. But I heard another angry footsteps on the hallway. My father!I almost forgot that he turned like one of them, too.
