Go Back in Time...
Writer for Life.
kYmberly Keeton is a graduate of The University of Houston with a B.A. in English-Creative Writing with a minor in African-American Studies (and was awarded a Baccalaureate Degree with Honors in English-Creative Writing). She has written six books of poetry and numerous short-stories to be self-published. Keeton’s first short story:Charlie.Browne.2.Butahflies.&Painky.Lillies won the Honorable Mention Sylvan N. Karchmer Short Fiction Prize in May 2006 at The University of Houston, and was published in the PARALLAX Journal at Richland College in Dallas, Texas. The short-story, now novella, will be self-published in 2011 by litARTMedia™.
As the former City Manager of Rolling Out Dallas and Entertainment Editor for the Dallas Weekly Newspaper, Keeton interviewed Larenz Tate, Illyasah Shabazz, Haile Gerima, Usher, Dwele, Musiq Soulchild, Talib Qwele, Charles Stone III, and countless others in the industry. Keeton's articles have been published in Young People For.org, Atlanta Voice,The Washington African American Post, The Capitol Outlook, The National Society of Black Engineers, The Ave Magazine, The SacObserver.com, The Miami Times Online, Spinner.com, and Black Chicago Online.net.
Creating her own publication entitled Literafeelya Magazine in 2003, featuring art and politics, the magazine produced twenty-two issues online. The publication was awarded a publishing grant, funded by Young People For, in November of 2007. Keeton is also the former Publisher of Songhai News: The Black Collegiate Voice-Black Newspaper at the University of Houston, and one of three founders of the periodical. She now publishes soflynmythirties, an opinionated blog for women in their thirties.
In December of 2009, Keeton was awarded The Graduate Certificate in African-American Studies from The University of Houston. Currently, she is working on her second novel, compiling personal published/unpublished works for a magazine collection entitled: soul sistah penning literati..., and producing multimedia projects through litARTMedia™. As an arts activist for education, Keeton is an Artist in Residence at Fotofest, and The South Dallas Cultural Center.
