As the awful year from 2008
Continues after the start of 2009,
A lonely, struggling, tired old man
Begins to fear he'll lose his mind.

For three years now his life has been awful
And still no sign that he'll ever win,
No hope, no prayer, no chance it seems
Another good year will e'er begin.

He struggles on no longer dreaming
As he falters through life's many travails,
He wonders why the good times ended?
And why his life began to fail?

He walks along a lonely trail
With no end, or hope e'er in sight,
He's hoping for the nightmare to end
Even if it's with the end of life.

For what's the use of going on
When nothing ever turns out right?
He's lost the will to struggle on
He's given up on life's sad plight.

One day eventually it has to change
His sorry plight has got to end,
His broken, shattered, pointless life
Has surely got, one day, to mend.

Until that day he staggers on
Afraid to even look behind,
Afraid of all life's broken promises
Afraid at last, he'll lose his mind.
