Bitter Sweet Memories

Poetry By: Philip Roberts
Literary fiction

A realisation hit me that there are no entirely happy memories. All memories bring some sadness, if only at the fact that the good times we remember are now past. This is an attempt at a renge-style poem.

You find yourself yearning
For times now long past,
But there's no going back.

Painful memories of better times
That you once knew.

Your memories give you
Both pleasure and pain,
Yet you won't live without them.

Painful memories of easy times
Before things went wrong.

All memories bring pain
Some bring pleasure too;
None bring only pleasure.

So you cling to sweet memories
As painful as they may be.

THE END
