There's a piece of history in our town that the people will never forget. It was the windrush that happened in 1916. Windrushes are technically called tornadoes, but we didn't learn that until 30 years later, so the name kind of stuck. When the townspeople first saw the windrush, they thought it was a curse. There were stories in neighboring towns about curses and how they were defeated. The men thought they could control it. Their wives of course protested their trying to fight it, but the men didn't listen. They loaded up every weapon they could find in the town. They surrounded it and started to run towards it, firing guns and throwing knives. They realized they couldn't control it just before they were swept away. Most of them survived, but several of the older men were killed. A young man named Bryan Jackson was also killed. He had gotten married two weeks earlier. His wife went crazy after they found his body. The windrush blew everything away: the crops, the cattle, even several buildings. It took fourteen years to completely rebuild the town. No matter how much is discovered about tornadoes, in our town, it will always be a windrush that was a curse.
