Jack Scrumpy in- Stormy Devil
Jack watched from his bedroom window as more rain poured from the dark sky. Lighting cracked like a whip and the moon seemed like it was hanging on for dear life. He was wrapped in a big blue bath towel, sipping on a cup of hot chocolate dad had just made him.
“It ain’t half stormy out there!” he called to Susie, his little sister, who was sat on her bed.
“Oh, I don’t like it! It’s not fair. I wanted to go over and see Jenny’s new hamster!” she pouted.
“You heard what Mum said. It’s too wet and windy to be out there. You’ll get soaked.”
“Well I’m bored. There’s nothing to do in this boring bedroom.”
“Hey well guess what? I heard that when there’s a storm, lock the doors and windows because Storm Devils get into your house and eat all your electricity!”
“Oh, Don’t be so stupid, Jack. You know Mum will be cross if she finds out you’ve been trying to scare me again.”
She folded her arms and stomped across the room where she sat in a sulk.
Jack grinned and looked out into the storm imagining how much fun it would be playing in all that rain. He remembered last year when there was a storm. He and Dad were fishing at the time.
All of a sudden as if someone flipped a switch, there was an almighty crack, a flash then everything went black. Jack jerked in surprise, hot chocolate spilt down the side of the mug onto the bed. He carefully inched over and set the mug down onto a chest of drawers. The wind howled through the roof space. Rain tapped at the window.
“Su...Susie?” he called, wrapping the towel tighter around himself.
“Over here.” A voice whispered back.
Jack crawled over to where the voice was coming from. Susie was sat in the corner next to Jacks computer. Jack, feeling his way around the room, huddled beside her.
“What’s happened?” she whispered.
“I’ve got no idea. I can’t see a thing it’s so dark.”
“What do we do? I’m not sitting here in the dark all night.” said Susie.
“We need some light...”
“How ‘bout a torch?” she replied.
“Sshh...Did you hear that?” said Jack.
“Oh, shut up Jack. You’re just trying to scare me like you always do. I’ll tell Mum!”
“No really, did you hear it?”
“I never heard anything and you know it. Now come on this isn’t the-”
Ka-Shooooo, Ka-Shooooo
“J-Jack? Was that you?” asked Susie nervously.
“No. See I told you!” replied Jack. “That really wa-“
Ka-Shooooo, Ka-Shooooo
Susie shrieked and held onto Jacks arm with her eyes closed tight.
“We’ve got to do something Jack.” said Susie, terrified.
“Right that’s it! Jack Scrumpy to the rescue!” he stood up with one hand on his hip and one raised in the air. Not that Susie could see, because it was so dark.
“I’m not coming...” said Susie hugging on to a cushion. “I’m staying here.”
“No you’re not. You’re coming with me. Were in this together ok?”
Susie began to tremble she was so scared. Whatever was that noise? It was scary whatever it was.
Jack began creeping out of his bedroom feeling his way along the hallway with his hands. Susie clutched onto his arm as he did. The two jumped as a crack of lightening lit the hallway of the house creating shadows that looked like claws and teeth.
The noise grew louder as they got half way down the staircase. Jack almost fell over Dad’s set of golf clubs. As the pair reached the entrance to the living room the noise grew louder.
KA-SHOOOO, KA-SHOOOOO
Susie clutched tighter as Jack slowly pushed the door open to the living room. They couldn’t see a thing. It was so dark they could hardly see their own hands in front of their faces.
“J-Jack...do you think it’s one of those stormy devil things?” whispered Susie.
“It sure is!” replied jack peering around the door frame, into the living room. “ And I think it’s eaten all our electric.”
“Ooh” whimpered Susie as she squeezed her eyes tighter. She certainly didn’t want to see the ugly beast that was hiding in their house.
Another crack and a flash lit up the living room. Jack stepped back as a big white round shape was briefly spotted. Back into darkness the two carried on feeling their away around the living room. Mum’s stereo, the bookcase, the window seat, Dad’s trophy cabinet and finally to the TV set.
And then...Tink...Clink...Ping! Light!
“AAAAGHH!! RUN!!” they both yelled, blinded by the light. The big white shape rose from the couch.
“Ah, you kids. Can’t a man sleep around here?”
“Da-ad!” They both shouted and laughed. So there’s no such thing as a storm devil after all...or is there?
