Short Story By: tin2twinkling
Literary Fiction

A princess is born without a heart. She grows up without a heart.. will she stay that way?

A/N: truly, truly, truly short.. and metaphor alert.. and there's a moral lesson in it. And, i wrote this in tribute to a story that i had read when i was still small.. i never forgot about it.. but i could never remember what it was called. View table of contents...

There was once a princess who was born without a heart. Her parents, who loved her so much, asked a fairy to keep their daughter alive. The fairy did so but with a slight set-back: the princess would never learn to be good as long as she had no heart. The king & queen, raised the princess and taught her all good things but she never learned them and refused to obey them. One day she decided to play in her father’s garden which she was not allowed into. She snuck into the garden after tricking the guards & ordering them to go find her missing dolls. Once inside, she skipped and kicked at the wonderful blossoms and flowers. She saw a little pool of water and she walked over to it. the water was so still it was like a mirror. Unknown to the princess, the magical pool showed the inside of people who looked into it. The princess, oblivious to this, looked at her reflection and saw a dark hole in her chest. Scared and shocked, she ran to her parents and told them what had happened as she cried and cried.
“We did not wish you to find out about this matter that is why we kept you out of that garden,” the king and the queen said.
The princess, still crying asked ‘How could she possibly live without a heart?’ Then the fairy came and told her that she must try to be as good as she can in order to obtain a heart. At first it was hard and she kept kicking people and yelling at them when she failed, but after a while she learned to say please and she helped other people in their chores as well. One day as she was helping her mother in the garden, she saw the pool and avoided it as much as she could. Her mother, the queen, called her to look at the pool and the princess, nervous, walked slowly and looked in. How wondrous it was when she found she had a heart. Everyone in the palace cheered and clapped for their princess had learned how to be good and now had a heart inside of her.
