When you begin to wonder about the word love, what comes to mind? Defined as an intense feeling of deep affection to another, those simple words speak truth beyond imagination. As a young girl, I can remember the warmth of my mother's arms. Her gentle embrace would soothe my desperate cries. Or other times when my grandfather would give me gifts of chocolate and candy, my face would shine like the morning star. One of my favorite childhood memories are the times when my mother, grandmother, and grandfather would all get together and sing to me. They would sing You are my sunshine every chance they had. They loved me with every being in their souls and would do absolutely anything to see that big grin they all know too well.
Sometimes I like to reminisce on the aroma of my grandma's chocolate chip cookies. She would say to me, "Red, would you like to like to lick the spoon?" Oh, how I loved to lick the spoon. But I knew if I didn't get there in time, Granny might give it to Erin, my younger sister. As I ran to the kitchen on my chubby, little legs, my Papa grabbed me from behind and began to tickle me behind my ears. I giggled so much I became short of breath and only then did I stop giggling and demand to be let go. Only now do I ponder how happy the atmosphere was.
Love sometimes happens in weird ways that a small child like me couldn't understand at the moment. It isn't right there in your face at all times. True love can happen at random times such as just being in the right place at the right time. I remember dressing up real nice one day and not knowing why. Holding a basketful of flower petals I ran down an aisle even though people seated on either side whispered me to slow down and to throw the petals. I didn't understand the situation and was completely confused. As I finally stopped at the end and my aunt told me where to stand, I looked down that aisle and oh at that very moment time went still. Like an angel descended from heaven whose wings just had that right touch of sparkle, my beautiful mommy walked towards me. Just the sight of her caused my tension to release and I believed everything was going to be just fine.
Ever since that day there was a man that went wherever my mommy went. He was a nice man though. Sometimes he would come home with gifts for mommy and she was just so happy. He even would give me piggy back rides whenever I wanted. He took me and Erin to the park all the time and some days, he would tell us some of the craziest stories that I now know were just fairytales. Sometimes, he would even talk to us in these crazy voices, I didn't know why, but it sure was funny. We were like peas in a pod, we were one happy family.
Love also brought me two more younger sisters in my life that I love dearly to this day. And we all get along just fine. We may have our ups and our downs, but hey, that's any family right? No matter the circumstances, as long as we have each other and God on our side, everything will stay in place.
