"Surprise!"

By: MAmberConrad
Memoir

We had a surprise party for my dad.... Just read it. I know it's just a couple of paragraphs, but I enjoyed watching his reaction. View table of contents...

“He’s coming! Everybody come in closer!”

The crowd gathered. Whispers filled the air; the electric charge is almost chilling. The excitement rushed through the mass of people, their ages ranging from three years old to eighty years old.

The door opened. Everyone was silent. The tension was impenetrable. A man stepped into the room. At five foot nine, he was a solid looking man. He looked like he had been fishing all day, his face and arms tanned.

            “Surprise!”

He nearly dropped the package he had been holding. At first, confusion swept his face. As the realization hit, three of his youngest grandchildren came running at him, nearly knocking him down. The three girls wrapped themselves around him, and as he hugged them, he started to tear up.  The children scattered back into the crowd.

He looked around and saw everyone. Recognizing all the faces, he asks, “What is this?”  His three daughters step up and wrap him into another hug. “Happy birthday, dad,” they said together. “Happy birthday.”

Actually, Katie.... That was the one thing that I really wrestled with in my head...."Is he gonna have a heart attack?" Thank goodness he didn't! Thanks so much for commenting. The party went well. Lots of food, lots of guests, great music! It was just a blast. Well worth it.

So, so nice. Thanks for sharing it. We are all a bunch of short stories, aren't we. Ted

Yes we are, Ted. I've been told I can tell a good story by other family members and friends. I was just so excited about the party when I came in, so I decided to share it with my Booksie-Buddies.

MA

I like your story 'cause everyone feels good! All of you giving the surprise birthday party and your Dad being surprised!!

What a lovely memory you have made!!.....Jerry

Jerry, of all the memories we've shared as a family, this will definitely go down in the books. It was a fun, FUN place to be. It actually has brought my sisters and I back together. (We literally live 15 minutes from each other, and rarely see each other). So, with us bringing this party together, the three of us have gotten closer. So, not only did we have an excellent party, I also think I have a stronger relationship with my sisters.

Thanks so much for commenting, Jerry. You may be old enough to be my father, but age is all in your head anyway. I'm 32, and still tell people I'm 23!!! (Maybe I'm dyslexic, eh?)

MA

This is so joyous yet made me cry. I too have the most wonderful "surprise" party. On my 40th my hubby and sister arranged a surprise party, the biggest surprise my mother making the trip for the event (she was ill then and rarely travelled too far) How everyone kept it a surprise I have not a clue - but my reaction was exactly as you describe. What a wonderful daughter you are!

Well, it wasn't just me, trust me on that one. We originally were going to have my dad's friends pretend to kidnap him and take him to the party....But knowing my dad, he always knows how to get out of situations like that, and we didn't want anyone to get hurt.
My two sisters and I got it all together. It was quite an experience. I don't really plan parties (not my sort of thing, being a wall-fly), and let's just say I don't plan on doing any more parties for a while!
Thanks for commenting, Anna.

I'm here, I'm here!!
*gasping for air*

(Not gasping for Katie, aka air... actual air, lol)

It's been crazy-ness here.

So sorry I just found this, but I loved it! I'm a great big sucker for snapshots in time and this one was so full of excitement and anticipation and joy. I've always been a little afraid that the very things that at the time I'm sure I'll never forget, I will. And that seems to be happening a lot more the older I get!

I'm so glad you committed this one to paper and I'm really happy that you invited us to the party!

Thanks! ~ Sheryl

MA, that was so cool.. and I enjoyed it. I almost felt as if I was there. I can just imagine the look on his face the moment everyone yelled "surprise". I have never had or given a surprise birthday party, but I've always been one to fantasized about them.

It was a lot of work to host a surprise party, but it was well worth it! Thanks for the comment, Vee.
