Wait at the gate, I said when we were young,
As you kept trying to sneak through, or by.
Wait at the gate, I said with a smile,
To a wagging tail and clever bright eyes.

Wait at the gate, as memories rush by,
To a dark night that near' took our lives.
Wait at the gate, an act of great loyalty,
You waited, to return to my side.

Wait at the gate, though you needn't be told,
We're both older now, you and I.
Wait at the gate, and with patience you watch,
As the baby goes crawling by.

Wait at the gate, now she's up walking 'round,
And you stand so close next to her side.
Wait now, hold steady, and without a sound,
Your strong collar becomes her guide.

Wait at the gate, as she comes home from school,
And the days turn from weeks into years.
Wait at the gate, and our story unfolds,
A full cup, mixed with sweet joy and tears.

Wait at the gate, I quietly ask.
It's time now, you're ready to leave.
Wait at the gate, and the tears come again,
I hold you and hear your heart beat.

Wait at the gate, my beloved old boy,
This choice I have made is so hard.
Wait at the gate, is your promise to me,
As I whisper I love you my Pard.
