The first dog my family ever had was a male I'll call V. Most of his life took place before I was born, while the rest of it was when I was a young child, too early to remember much. He was a Rottweiler, aggressive in nature, but typically affable in demeanor.

He was by himself for many years before he finally got a friend and companion in the form of our next dog, B.

She was a friendly Black Laborador Retriever, already coming into adulthood by the time we got her.

Although V was at the top of the Hierarchy, the two never fought. Perhaps B simply never challenged it, but the two of them lived in harmony for many years. Life changed dramatically for both of them when we got our 3rd dog, M.

M came into our lives as a puppy. She was a Rottweiler/Akita cross, quite energetic in life. M got along with both V and B as a puppy, although she was much more affectionate with V.

V had a pretty calm life, that unfortunately came to a quick end. On what would have been a regular, insignificant day, this real-life reverie was broken. He escaped from our yard, and ran out into the neighborhood.

As he ran throughout the neighborhood, he met a child who was walking with his own dog. V ended up getting into a fight with the dog, which ended in a stalemate, leaving both animals relatively uninjured. Unfortunately, the child tried to intervene in the fight, and ended up getting bitten.

The boy was hurt, although not seriously. However, due to him harming a child, we were ordered to euthanize him. It broke our hearts to do it, but we had no choice but to put him down. And so ended the life of our dog, V.

M and B were by themselves now. B changed somewhat after V's demise. Although still sweet, she became more aggressive, especially with M. Always quick to put M back in line, their lives went on.

M was energetic, but as a mixture of two aggressive breeds, she became more assertive as she grew up. She continued to mature over the coming couple of years, becoming a large, strong dog, with a bit of a chip on her shoulder.

Relations between the two dogs worsened over time. What was once an affectionate older/younger companionship, quickly devolved into fighting. Not content to be in a submissive situation, M began to aggravate B. The first several times B was challenged for dominance, M was quickly and easily beaten down. B was relatively easy-going about the whole thing, usually only harming M when provoked.

Life went about normally, only occasionally being broken by a fight here and there.

While M continued to mature in size and power, B was only getting older, and slower. As M went up, B went down. Everytime the two of them fought, B lost more and more ground to her. Until the inevitable day when things changed for good:

On this sad day, their battles came to a definitive end. In B's old age, she lost her speed and power, and so she was soundly beaten by M. In an unfortunate turn of fate, B even suffered a mortal neck wound.

Already old in age and moving toward her natural end, even the veterinarian told us it was more humane to put B down, than to let her struggle to cling on to life. So we euthanized B, our beloved Black Lab, with tears in our eyes.
